It's almost shocking to me how obviously the Republicans in congress have been trying to outright sabotage the governance of the US, and equally by how little the populace seems to care. This should have ensured Obama winning by double the votes. But, as always, even if he wins utterly dominating, it will be, what, 58-42%?

It is puzzling. I guess quite a lot of the country think that his agenda was worth stopping. But I think the bigger reason is that a lot of people tend to blame government gridlock on the President, whatever is actually happening in Congress.

Bill Maher mentioned how Bain Capital forced a leveraged buyout of KB Toys for $305m only paying $18m on their own funds to buy the company. Bain then proceeded to pay itself $85m and ultimately KB Toys went under and jobs were lost. Can someone explain a) how this leverage buyout stuff works, and b) how can a buyer invest so little then pay itself so much from the new company and let it eventually go under?

You just need to look at a particular family close to our hearts.. The Glazer

Romney: "He says we need more firemen, more policemen, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It's time for us to cut back on government and help the American people."

Since everyone important can afford private education and security, we should just fire all police, firefighters, and teachers. Cut out that government waste of educating those who aren't wealthy.

It's an insane world when a Presidential candidate attacks firemen, policemen and teachers for political gain.

We are just on the cusps of a brave new world of having a price for anything of public value. In a new Republican world, there is a finite price on life and thus their opposition to Obamacare.

This is why I am not even one bit worried that Romney will become President. Heck when even the guy Romney is trying to associate himself with (Walker of Wisconsin) is saying Romney got it wrong you know Romney is fecked.

As I said before the victory by Walker in Wisconsin means nothing at all for Romney.

I'm puzzled by this as well. The republicans don't seem to mind sabotaging the goverment on the expense of the people, and the people don't seem to care or perhaps know. They have been more shameful than any other opposition in US for decades.

That's the thing -- everyone says the "american public knows it" but judging on the election results, there are either a lot of brainwashed people or just dumb people running around.

Obama would seem like a slam-dunk by an intelligent person's point of view but its scare how many people think otherwise.

Just read that George 'macaca' Allen is back in the hunt for his old senate seat. What the feck is wrong with Jim Webb not going for another term?

He has other things he wants to do with his life, probably a little sick of politics and actually I want to commend him for not becoming one of those politicians we see so often who once they get elected their prime focus becomes nothing except getting re-elected.

I heard a report the other day about the Republicans attacking the appointment of the next ambassador to Iraq. It struck me as petty and verging on desperate, is there an expectation that they'll get anywhere with it?

He will probably escape and become Ambassador. There are however, a lot of question marks surrounding the nomination. Not the least of which involve various Iraqi groups saying they won't work with him. And that's not taking into account the email scandal he's embroiled in.

Who is it?

Edit: Just read that its Brett McGurk.

Is that a hope or have you heard tings?

Just an analysis of the man and what he stood for.

Very low profile. Higly articulate in his views and gets into the details and nuances..and explains them all so clearly.

He did not come out all in favour or against anything Obama said.

He did barely get into the Senate but Virginia will back him fully if he runs and he is the perfect candidate that will attract the blue color vote...not that the Demes need them anymore. The Hispanis are a lock for them.

Lots of talk about Hillary and Biden...both will be too old imo.

...or the Dems may go for the Progressives fav....Warren.

one of those two imo..my gut feel is Webb.

The aging, white, right-wing theology nut in my office (as I overheard) stated about some bill being pushed forward by Reps, "this shows who really cares for Americans."

I think Hillary's age could be overlooked because of her gender. It'd be hilarious watching all those Fox wankers reverse their narratives on her back to the 'scheming Clinton mafia' schtick. I'm certain Obama will want to ensure his potential successor gets in.

You have to wonder what he'll do after all of this as he'll still be relatively young. I don't think he's up for the speech circuit.

He will remain a huge influence in the US. He is respected by many people from both parties..though for obvious reasons, the republicans do not show that. But there are many moderates who are quiet atm.

I think his second term will be easier and he will get coperation.

The current attempts to suppress votes are the last desperate attempts to preserve what this demographic sees as their disapearing 'way of life'.

With their numbers being overwhelmed, their voice will get smaller.

I think then we will see some common sense prevail.

When he gets in, the repubs can't really focus on not allowing him to be re-elected so they might actually work with him. I think they're cnuts who won't, but you can still hope!

You have to give it to some politicians, or the men behind them who create their talking points. Even if you don't like them, they convince most people to frame the argument in the way they want them to. So even if you don't like Romney, you start to think that the economy not growing as fast as we'd like is something the President is directly responsible for. Apparently the president is supposed to be manipulating the markets with constant legislation.

Of course the choices made by the individual named Obama had little to do with the economic trouble we're in. Many predicted economic disaster from the policies of the last President, but the idea he should still take the blame is somehow lost on people, they seem to think you can repair an entire economy from mis-management and manipulation for the purposes of extracting profits for a few at the cost of many with a few well places policies.

The democrats need to get on the ball, they just get slapped around between a continuous onslaught of preposterously framed questions, which they are too stupid to ignore and instead engage. All you have to do is ask a democrat 'When will you stop beating your wife' and they'll talk till you don't care anymore.

I still think it's early doors yet. All this kerfuffle is just insiders and 24 hour newsies wanking each other off and justifying their existence. It doesn't really get going for the people until the debates start.

Obama Policy Will Grant Immunity To Young Immigrants

http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsme..._grant_immunity_to_young_immigran.php?ref=fpb

President Barack Obama’s administration announced Friday that it would stop deporting younger illegal immigrants and would begin granting them work permits.

The policy will apply to immigrants younger than 30 who arrived in the U.S. before the age of 16, have been in the country at least five years, have no criminal history and graduated from high school, earned a GED or served in the military. The decision could affect as many as 800,000 immigrants.

“Our nation’s immigration laws must be enforced in a firm and sensible manner,” Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a statement. “But they are not designed to be blindly enforced without consideration given to the individual circumstances of each case. Nor are they designed to remove productive young people to countries where they may not have lived or even speak the language. Discretion, which is used in so many other areas, is especially justified here.”

DHS said it will continued to “focus its enforcement resources on the removal of individuals who pose a national security or public safety risk, including immigrants convicted of crimes, violent criminals, felons, and repeat immigration law offenders.”

Napolitano told reporters on Friday that the new policy did not amount to amnesty.

Senior administration officials admitted that the deferral waivers, which would have to be renewed every two years, would allow a future administration to treat the same population differently.

Good move by the President.

time for Romney to get his etch a sketch out... :)

Brilliant move on Obama's part on immigration. Reasserts his support in key demographics, forces Romney into a corner he'll probably struggle to get out of.

Luckily the Tea Party mob can be made to get angry over both. I think Obama will win it when it comes to the debates. Romney was able to deal with the assorted fecknuts who were challenging him, but Obama is a different class of opponent.

Yeah Romney was shite in the debates, he only won the ones he did by packing the hall, and that was against spazzers. On the other hand, I think he found it harder pretending to be a tinfoil hat loony than he will playing the moderate conservative pro-business candidate, which might offset some of the difficulties of facing a peoper opponent.

It will definitely be much tighter than I previously thought. That said, the economies in key swing states are all outperforming the national economy, which undercuts Romney's message that Obama is weak on economic issues. Also, Obama's team seem to be making some important social choices on gay rights and immigration - probably off of polling and focus groups that reflect shifting attitudes - that will help him in November.
