US Politics

This isn't Congress-related, but I still thought here would be the best place to post the link. Anyway, extraordinarily depressing news. A 17-year-old girl starts dating a 17-year-old boy, except he turns out to be an out-and-out Neo-Nazi. Obviously, she didn't have a great understanding of modern history; she said that her boyfriend was very good at history, noting that the "Jews were partially responsible for WWII". Learning this and observing his Facebook posts, her parents tried to break the relationship up. They were also intending to show her documentaries about WWII and the Holocaust. One morning, they find the Neo-Nazi in their daughter's bedroom at 5AM, and tell him to leave and never come back. Consequently, he shoots both of her parents dead, before shooting himself; he is currently alive, and has been charged with two counts of murder.

I still can't really comprehend how the supposed "Leader of the Free World" cannot see the flaws in the Second Amendment, and also can't comprehend how so many Neo-Nazis seem to exist in the US. I'm in Ireland, and I don't think I have ever come across a Neo-Nazi in my life. With this, Charlottesville, Trump's election, Richard Spencer, and Steve Bannon, you'd quickly come to the conclusion that US politics badly needs a total electoral destruction of the GOP; only then would you think they would decide to condemn figures on the far-right.

I've always joked that some parts of the US are basically white ISIS. This moron and his zealot followers only dignifies that.
It’s unfortunately quite true. Large portions of Americans who rail against ISIS and Sharia law would gladly impose the Biblical version of it on America if given the chance.

This is the actual ballot itself. You can clearly see its an invalid ballot as you cant be sure which candidate the voter picked, yet the court still validated it.

Well, its pretty obvious who the voter voted for... but technically its probably an invalid ballot because the person is an idiot and doesnt know how to fill it out.

Almost certainly wanted to vote republican throughout but there are clear guidelines for what should be a void vote. I'd be amazed if there aren't several other weird cards, on both sides.

Yep, even though its likely he did vote for the Republican, the ballot is invalid because the person was incapable of filling it in properly.

Even the knowledgeable Virginia political experts have said the ballot is invalid.

To be fair, anyone who can't follow simple instructions like that shouldn't even have their vote counted.

I heard a similar story on npr about a year ago. The country is hurting now but in a few decades it will be far worse. The average person has no intent (prefer to live in the present) or idea how to handle retirement plans even when they have the money to do so. Worse, people on low wage can't contribute at all even if they want to. This is all about to snowball. I don't remember the stat about average pension savings but I thought it was a lot worse than the WaPo reported here. Something like $5,000 for 50 year olds. Very sad!

Edit. Great example here from a reply to the tweet. I heard many elderly lost all their retirement plans on the last crash and couldn't make it back. Someone near retirement should be nowhere near volatile plans....

This sort of story scares the crap out of me. If there’s another fin’l crisis in next 7 yrs so my 401k (volatile replacement for pensions) loses most of its value (as in 2008), I’ll never get to retire.

Edit 2. Median retirement plan for working age is indeed $5,000. Mean is $95,000, boosted by CEOs etc
https://www.cnbc.com/2017/04/07/how...ly-has-saved-for-retirement-at-every-age.html

Also, 80% of people have less than $5,000 in cash savings and 62% have less than $1,000. It's frightening what's about to hit.

Roy Moore files last-minute lawsuit challenging Alabama result

Republican Roy Moore, who lost a recent Alabama senate election to his Democrat rival Doug Jones, has filed a lawsuit in an attempt to challenge the result.

The lawsuit was filed the day before officials were due to certify Mr Jones the winner - two weeks after the vote.

Mr Moore was expected to win the election in the deeply conservative state, but his campaign was dogged by allegations of child sexual misconduct.

He refused to concede to Mr Jones, who won narrowly by about 20,000 votes.

Mr Moore's lawsuit alleges that there were voting irregularities in 20 precincts and calls for a fraud investigation and a new election.

One of the election experts cited in the suit is Richard Charnin, a conspiracy theorist who also claims there was widespread voter fraud against Donald Trump in the presidential election.

Mr Moore's lawyer said the purpose of the complaint was to "preserve evidence of potential election fraud and to postpone the certification of Alabama's Special Election by Secretary of State John Merrill until a thorough investigation of potential election fraud, that improperly altered the outcome of this election".

Mr Merrill told the Associated Press on Wednesday that he had no intention of delaying the canvassing board meeting and certification of the winner.

"It is not going to delay certification and Doug Jones will be certified [on Thursday] at 1 pm and he will be sworn in by Vice-President Pence on 3 January," Mr Merrill said.

What is the point of adding Hillary Clinton's tweet without any context ? Clinton's tweet is a reply to Trump's distopian view of current US. It's like replying to a Gun related tragedy with a note saying Bernie Sanders voted to give gun manufacturers legal immunity. It's pointless drivel, like your vote for Jill Stein.

Actually that's a good point about Bernie. The reason I added the tweet is to show how to tone deaf "America is already great" was as a slogan when so many people are being ground up as fodder for billionaires by our society. I'm sure you know I didn't vote for Jill Stein and are just wumming as usual.

America is a great country though. The tweet was a direct reply to 'Make America Great Again' campaign, which promised to discriminate against Muslims, Mexicans, low income workers and poor people on social benefits. You are taking a reply without any context and using it as a response to an unrelated article. Actually, I'm pretty sure that you know how ridiculous it sounds, just a quick hit on "Hillary Clinton".

Sanders also has some shitty views on foreign policy.

Many times, I honestly think you are a republican troll, just shit stirring to be honest. In Caf awards thread, I had you as an initial choice for the poster you'd meet for a drink just to verify you are really the guy you claim to be. You are not that far away from me, I'm near Chicago and you are in Michigan.

Non interventionism and anti imperialism is a leftist value. Its unfortunate that you can't imagine political values beyond mainstream Democrat and Republican positions. criticizing a Democrat isn't just things republicans do and vice versa.

What I want for Utopia and what I can have right now also matters. It's unfortunate that both fringes think unless it's their way, the others are corporate stooges

How do you get what you want without talking about it?

How is don't sell massive amounts of arms to Israel utopia? Or don't drop bombs on wedding parties? Or don't enable genocide in Yemen?

What does it say about our country when "murder less people" is seen as utopia by the center?

It really isn't.
