US Politics

So.. if some conservative cause comes into senate, how is Doug Jones going to vote? He knows his constituency is ultra conservative but his party is liberal, does he treat this as a one year window to do anything he likes or does he do what his constituents want and give himself a chance at re-election in 2018?

I would like to thank black men and women for their continued resistance & common sense.

Isn't the seat up again in 2020 not 2018?

98 and 93%. Incredible. Just caught up with all the news and a great win for Democrats! Hopefully it continues this way to November 2018.

Let's talk about that inset "Sex by Race"... I'd have expected close to 50% of whites to be male and female each, same for blacks.
It really should be "by sex and race" right?

On a more serious note, as a white male, the white male voting behavior is just shameful.

Those white folks though... You would swear that they don't have children and/or empathy.

Honestly it's the women that are more surprising to me.
I expect white guys to support other white guys, humans are tribalistic and can usually only see themselves in people that look similar to them.

But majority of white women would rather vote for a suspected child molester than a democrat who's jailed KKK members - I mean, honestly!

This Jones guy seems to be white as well though...

Whilst it's obviously a great result it's still concerning that 49% were happy to vote for a child molester just because he's on their political team.

Yep. That's what I was thinking. Glad that Jones won and all, but was hardly a landslide.

Social media has polarised politics to a ridiculous degree. America and, to a lesser extent, the UK need to break out of the two-party system. There's no longer any room for right or wrong. It's all come down to my team vs you team.

People are delusional if they think a Democrat will win a Senate seat in Alabama. Kaepernick could run as a Republican there and win.
:D Amazing this happened. Sadly, I'm not surprised at all that Moore got so many votes. In America, many people are staunch Republican and staunch Democrat that they'd vote for someone with that R or D no matter what they've done.

I agree that the 2 party system is out dated. The political parties aren't really representative of the populous anymore and far too rigid.

I'd disagree that social media has caused this.
The polarisation was always there but the different voices weren't being heard because news & opinions were only consumed on tv and in newspapers primarily.

Any place with this huge a difference in voting across race has a problem. Staggering.

What an amazing result. Never thought he would do it . But Alabama came of age and rejected Moore and Bannon and what they stand for. Dems in a strong position going into 2018 .But they have this habit of blowing it.

I totally get why you're relieved, but in the end it's only a narrow majority of Alabama voters who rejected them. About half of Alabama supported Moore, Bannon, and what they stand for.

@fcbforever Fair play, you were spot on.

Thanks, I guess. :wenger: All these statitics courses in university weren't a complete waste I guess, it helps you to dismiss some of the more problematic things out there. Also, following Silver and his team helps a lot. I can't recommend him enough, he's pretty much spot on all the time, and he was again tonight.

Whilst i'm glad Moore didnt win I still can't believe so many voted for a suspected pederast....has the coverage of his past record been completely partisan? Can Alabama republicans claim this was all happening in a democrat echo chamber and there was a lack of objective facts? or do they actually consider Democratic policies on issues like abortion to be a greater crime than Paedophilia?

All made up by Soros!

Combination of all of that. What I've alser heard a lot is "that 40 years ago in Alabama, this wasn't a big deal! Mothers would have been glad if the district attorney pursued their daughter". They also quetion why it took them so long to speak out (with one women talking about that then suddenly admitting she was molested at 16 as well, but she didn't talk about it ever either!).

We really forget HOW backwards the US is in large swaths. Trump wasn't a blunder, he's a symptom of a lot of the south and the midwest living in a completely different world to ours.

You shouldn't have high hopes for many of the southern states when it comes to their voting habits. They'd vote for a Rat simply because it has an "R" by it's name.

Social media reinforced the polarization. The 'different voices' are being heard because of it.

Of course is has. I've never seen family members of mine behaving racist or pronounce their far-right political ideology, until they had a Facebook account. It's very confronting.

Precisely - which I personally prefer, better the devil you know and all that.

The polarisation has always been there, it was just easier to hide opinions in the past.

To be fair I dont think there are going to be many republican candidates as tarnished as Moore was so it may be hard to extrapolate out too far, however, the next presidential election is probably going to be divisive - bitter - and probably the most hostile ever... I cant help but think that Trump will thrive in such a horrid environment as debate and policies makes way for tweets and insults
