US Open

Goodbye Murray.. pathetically overpowered yet again. He'll have a fair excuse in continously being given day matches, but he showed little aggression and attempting to make sure the match finished as quick as possible.

Seriously needs McEnroe or someone huge to be his coach and give him what for.

Nothing against Murray but as a Nadal fan this is the best thing possible! Murray has Nadal's number on hard courts and him being out of the way is a huge relief for Rafa!

Nadal has Lopez and then Verdasco/Ferrer and then one of Youzny/Isner/Robredo/Querrey/Wawrinka/Robredo in the semis. Not easy at all but he really can get to the final this time.

So with Murray,Cilic, Davydenko, Roddick,Baggy, Gulbis, Berdych, Ljubicic the major players to fall till now this is how the draw looks with the most probably players to go through.

Murray performed way below what anyone would expect from him. Terrible performance, time to get a coach.

I think injury was bothering him towards the end? But yeah he was extremely poor which is strange because he's really really good on these hard courts.

He wasn´t 100% fit I think today BUT he needs a coach ffs (He is too passive and relies on opponents' mistakes far too much).

It was very a disappointing result but let's not write off Murray's career just yet (Still plenty of opportunities to come).

Fancy Sharapova to have too much for Wozniacki today, should be a good spectacle anyway

Of course. Sharapova is playing after all

I think she'll lose though. Her serve is yet far too weak and beating Capra in the last round was no big deal. 3 sets win for Wozzy :D

Not exactly positive talk from Murray:

Murray had come into the tournament rated by many as a better bet than world number one Rafael Nadal but such an early and seemingly inexplicable loss raised the inevitable questions about his ability to win a first Grand Slam title.

"I have no idea of whether I'll win a Grand Slam or not," he said. "You know, I want to but if I never win one, then what? If I give 100%, try my best, physically work as hard as I can, practice as much as I can, then that's all I can do."

It's honest talk. He may never win one, what with all the pressure on him as we generally produce shit tennis players. If there were a few more British players in the top 100 it might ease some of the expectation on him.

It was still very disappointing to see him a service game away from a 2 set lead, only to throw it away in such a manner. He well and truly bottled it when it mattered.

Whoa, steady on. He was asked that fifteen minutes into a press conference fifteen mintutes after he'd been knocked out of arguably his strongest tournament. He was fed up and it showed. I'd bet he'd be a lot more positive if he was asked this morning.

That's just a player really really disappointed at being knocked to early from a tournament where he had a legitimate chance to win. A more seasoned pro would have obviously hidden the hurt a bit better, but it doesn't make him negative or a defeatist.

It is also tbf, very plausible be might not win one, but that doesn't mean when all is said and done, he wouldn't have had a good career.

But not a great one either. With the talent he clearly has and seeing how good he is on hard courts, ending his career with no Slam would be quite poor.

Yeah he did bottle it in the 2nd set. I think he became a little complacent at 3-0 thinking he had the match in the bag. But then to waste another chance to wrap up the set was poor from him. He din't play like a top 4 player yesterday.

So much of elite sport is about, timing, mentality and that little bit of luck. It is sometimes a bit of luck that separates the greats from those we forget in no time.

For mentality see someone like, Safin, without the volatility, I think he could have won 2-3 more Grand Slams.

For timing, Leyton Hewitt, came on the scene, just when there was that little period of unrest, no real standout players at their peak, and got himself in the winners circle, but then the talent grew up, and he simply couldn't hack it at the top.

Murray is trying to overcome potentially the greatest player of all time, and of course a young pretender, who is all but ready to carry the mantle into the next little era of tennis.

Great post. And while I agree with what you say I yet don't think it should be THAT hard for Murray to win a Slam. Federer has been in a semi decline this past year. Del Potro beat him and Nadal back to back in NYC last year. I just feel that on these hard courts Murray really should be winning slams. He's definitely better than Nadal on these courts and as good as Fed. But he just can't translate his consistency from the Masters Series to the Slams. I yet think he will definitely win a Slam at some point but he IS a bit mentally weak.
I can understand him struggling to beat the stranglehold Rafa and Roger have on Wimbledon and Rolland Garros but hard courts are Murray's domain and he should be doing better.

Fish Djokovic started. Djokovic breaks early on. He's looking good.

EDIT: Fish breaks back and is then immediately broken again. Bizarre match.

First set Djokovic 6-3. Really impressive stuff. This is a Djokovic at a completely different level to the rubbish we saw in the 1st match.

Yeah it's Fish vs Djoko. Fish has been one of the form players over the last few months so I expected him to put up a better fight. Break down in the 2nd set as well. He had 3 break points to break back at 0-40 but missed all 3 break points and now it's game Djoko. This will end fairly quickly.

Had no idea this was on!

Its looking good so far, and not too mention he is not playing at night either which is a mental boost if you ask me.

Djoko 2 sets to love up and a break up in the 3rd. Playing like this he really could beat Federer for once in NYC.

Yeah exactly. Playing in the heat and the strong wind and against a very good player and winning so comprehensively is great for him.

Demolition complete. 6-1 in the final set. Stunning display.

He came really close in the final a few years back.. Or was it Semi?

He lost the final in 07. He had 5 set pts in the 1st set and 2 in the 2nd and he bottled every one of them and lost in straight sets

Nice stuff by Nole. Looking forward to his next match a lot now.

It's impressive given how he struggled in the first match, but I'd rather him do that and then get better with each match (as he has) than blitz the early competition and choke against someone better.

This was a good win, Fish was on some type of form coming into this match. To top it off, it wasn't at night either.

NAPRED NOLE!

That's the one. I watched that and was increasingly frustrated, I blamed his inexperience that night but since then he has done similar things.

He basically needs a psychologist.

He did learn from his mistakes and basically thrash the living daylights out of Federer 2 months later at Aussie Open but yeah he's started doing it again. Hope he can get the better of Fed this time. A Nadal Nole final would be good...and very unexpected.
Nole plays Monfils next, should win that one.

Yah was a great performance overall against a good player. He's got through a hard draw. One win away from a semi against Montanes/Fed/Soderling.

That's what I said about Sharapova. She just can't serve. 3 double faults in a row and Wozniacki with the early break.
