Mata is competing with Rooney isn't he? Fellaini isn't really playing the number 10 role.
Yes but heaps on here were so shitty with Mata after his recent performances that they had Herrera and Fellaini as more viable options in that role.

I think Messi is pretty good at football. Ronaldo also.

Don't shoot me!!
More unpopular is my opinion that Messi is overrated. I don't watch La Liga really so my opinion is based largely on his World Cup performances and a few UCL ones. But then, the World Cup is the ultimate test for a player.

This. I don't watch the league either, but from the CL and WC matches I've seen him in I've never seen him have an above average game. Can someone who only performs well in a certain environment and every now and again really be the best in the world?

His performances in the league for Barca are hardly "now and then".

Its this age old debate, do you need to perform in WCs to be really brilliant? I dont think you do really. I think being outstanding week in week out for your club is more important.

Rooney isn't good enough as a #10 to play for United, and isn't good enough as a #9. Not anymore. His passing is too erratic and he can't beat a man.

We need a goal threat from wide, and a dynamic striker (assuming Falcao can't stay fit).

Rafael can't stay fit and is over-rated on here, and should be replaced. Smalling and Evans will never be good enough, and Jones can't stay fit. Rojo looks a bombscare.

I don't see how Rooney's worse than van Persie as a number 9. In fact, I'd say he's better.

I am aware that this happened for the first time in a long time.

His stats - in terms of goals - from that particular ground, however, are better than any other striker in the league (if not Europe).

But he can't play at 9 or 10, you say? Righto.

Yeah, because goals against City at the Etihad are how to judge a player.

No, it's not. It's an important test for a player, but on average players will only ever play 15-25 games in the WC in their career. Especially in the modern game, it's not really anymore of an ultimate test for a player than the CL is.

You didn't watch the two CL finals he played against us?

Yeah, because goals against City at the Etihad are how to judge a player.

To be fair, you argued that his record in the derbies were awful. It's not the sole way to judge Rooney, of course, but if he's going to perform in any game for us then you'd want it to be against an opponent like Man City.

LOL. Overrated???

If he's overrated, then everyone is overrated. IMO Maradona is overrated, Messi has been sublime every season he plays, maradona only plays well on that a couple of highlight season, too little to be crowned as BPITUniverse

How can you say he's overrated if you say in the same sentence you don't watch him play for barcelona :wenger:

Yeah, because goals against City at the Etihad are how to judge a player.
You said his stats from the derby were shit though? He's always had an excellent record in big games, always is a reliable goalscorer and a reliable provider of assists. Think he's one of the top 5 in terms of goals and assists over the last few years. You can argue his overall performances at times (though I still disagree) but you can't argue the productivity.

Cruijff is the best player in the entire universe. Messi is overrated compared to him, two handful of trophies aren't enough.

Not only do I not get riled by the use of the term "philosophy", I actually like it and will him to say it when he is being interviewed. Im pretty sure that is a genuinely unpopular opinion seeing as I see so many people moaning about it on here.

1. Rafael is too old to still be this inconsistent and this injury prone. He should be fearing for his place.
2. One or both of Smalling or Jones aren't going to make it as first choice players with us. I don't think they suit LVG's style. Evans is also going to lose his place quickly unless he starts staying fit.
3. I was never that thrilled to have bought Falcao
4. On LVG, I think he'll do a good job but I think he may have gone past his peak as a manager.
5. I think we'll be lucky to get a couple more seasons out of DDG before he's off home. I fully expect us to make a complete balls out of our next keeper purchase.
6. Rojo's probably not very good.

Aaaaaand breathe (and wait for the inevitable abuse)...

We wont win the league under van Gaal. Just my opinion.

1: How dare you!
2: I agree - and I dare say a not insignificant minority of others do too.
3: Definitely agree, I know people say buying one player doesnt have any affect on whether you will buy another but, I just wanted to strengthen elsewhere. And Id have kept Welbeck.
4: His best achievements were decades ago, not even debatable. But hopefully he hasnt come too far down off his peak. Hopefully its a very gradual descent.
5: I CAST THEE OUT
6: I worry about this myself - but then I force myself to think about Vidic and make myself be patient.

That's my line!

Van Gaal is gonna ignore our defensive situation to give Ryan Giggs an easy 'win' when he starts

A la Ferguson with Moyes.

What's the centre back equivalent of Fellaini?

Jaysus, really? Why's the future so bleak?
It's not bleak, really, I just don't think it's all going to be smooth sailing just because we've opened the purse strings. In that time we may have to replace a number of players from our defence, buy a couple of midfielders and all of our first team strikers are approaching 30, so you'd assume one/some/all of them might drop off a bit. I just think it requires us to get a lot of things right in a relatively short space of time, when Chelsea particularly look like they've really gotten their shit together. In hindsight, as soon as we gave ourselves a 'lost season' under Moyes we were just ensuring we had a long way to come back from.

Yeah, you're probably right.

Easy to forget how incredibly hard it is to win that league title for any manager new to the PL and we're competing against three clubs/managers who've already won it at least once before, are fecking minted and have much better balanced squads than we do already. It's quite a big ask for Van Gaal to win it next season. Certainly seems unlikely.

Well the optimistic voice in my head keeps saying "Yeah, but with a proper break for the players and LVG during the summer, with a year to absorb his methods and hopefully a productive summer window with lessons learned from the last two, we could really hit the ground running next season." I don't think it's a coincidence that we saw some slow starts and a bit of a drop off from Di Maria. The WC is a bastard to recover from, particularly when you add in things like adapting to a new club/country and a new manager's methods which, if you believe the press, are pretty hard line (in terms of training anyway).

The optimistic voice in my head is similarly bullish. But I can't help thinking that voice is fuelled by spending almost 30 years supporting a team managed by SAF. When you were pretty much guaranteed a league title every 2 or 3 years. You have to wonder how many fans of other, less consistently succesful, clubs would be that optimistic in similar circumstances.

My optimistic head says look at Mourinho's third season at his other clubs. Either a disaster or non-existent.

Obviously it's somewhat flawed logic, as it doesn't necessarily mean things will pan out the same (being honest with myself I expect him to be there and go strong against next season) but still.. it's something.
