We are in a fecking mess, and everybody must take some responsibility. The squad needs totally restructuring, something that should have been addressed 4 years ago. 60 million on Mata and the cnut with the fuzzy hair is ridiculous. Why not Fernando from Porto? for 12m. Now we have two choices, we either buy ourselves out of this(paying ludicrous prices), or restructure and build for the future. I honestly believe we will have to patient and absorb a couple of years in the wilderness, but under the right guidance we can come back with strong once again.

3-5-2 will have to change sooner rather than later.

Rooney should be played deeper and Mata wider on the left to accomadate van Persie.
No rooney should not play deeper. Mata or a capable #10 should play that role. Rooney has propensity to miscalculate the weight needed for short and intermediate passes. And he's much more dangerous in an advanced position.

I meant more in the short term as im a bit sceptical about whos going to arrive this transfer window.

In a midfield 3,Rooney would fit perfectly into a lcm or rcm position with the emphasis on holding back and bursting forward with the front 3,in theory i see it working.

Compared to Fletchers passing in the last match,id go out with a three of fellaini, herrera and rooney to sure things up.

But completely agree as a striker hes great up front but we re more than catered for there, when need to plug the gaps untill, hopefully,we sign a fecking midfielder or 3.

As for his future though,im completely confident in years to come drop deeper and be great there.

I am not freaking out yet till I see this team with everyone that would be starting ..... starting. Yes, we need a few new players, but what we need more is the 4-5 starters to come back from injury.

We look awful when Welbeck doesn't play. He's off the ball movement and pace stretches defences and allows more space for everyone else to play. Without him our attacks are slow and our off the ball movement is terrible.

Welbeck and RVP is our best attacking combination.

Spot on. We must be up there as the most predictable team in the league. Welbecks pace is absolutely crucial, without it we are just playing into the oppositions hands.

Agree.

It's more or less reiterating what Jagga has said, but Welbeck should be starting at the expense of van Persie or Rooney in the 3-5-2.

Shaw will never reach Baines level despite all you lot getting all snobby about signing Baines.

What is 'Baines level'? I personally wanted us to sign Baines because I thought Moyes had a plan on how to utilise him in a system which would make us a better team overall. Obviously, Moyes had no plan at all and signing Baines would have probably been the wrong choice. I'd rather have Shaw who looks like he will be one of the best LB's around if he avoids injuries.

Baines is not that good defensively. It showed at the World Cup and when he comes up against top wingers, he allows attackers to drift in behind him and aerially he is quite poor.

Obviously going forward, he's top class, there's no doubt about that but I rate Shaw above him already in terms of defensive ability.

Baines got a lot of criticism in the World Cup because Rooney decided he couldn't be assed playing the left wing role and deserted his position leaving Baines 2 v 1. Shaw will be the better defender no doubt but he will never have the attacking impact Baines has.

If there was one positive thing Moyes would have done given time, it's improve our defence with some signings. And they probably wouldn't have been that costly, so Woodward would actually have been able to bid for them.

Because football does work like that.

All the evidence points towards Shaw having a more stellar career than Baines will:

  • England international
  • In high demand at the age of 18
  • Great experience at top-level football at such a young age
... all of which Baines never had until much later in his development.

You speak of snobbery on United fans' part, but the only snobbery on show here is your disdain for Luke Shaw.

It's not even that, it's just that i rate Baines very highly. To be honest i was probably trying to be controversial in saying that he won't reach his level but i feel like there won't be much between them at there peaks.

new manager, different system so "continuation" does not apply.
Same players and same outcome on Saturday. Looks familiar. Until new arrivals come in you could have any new manager and results will continue.

Newbies shouldn't be allowed to post in the matchday thread.
Completely agree with this.

Match threads are terrible, I've given up on them. I can't believe so many people comment on one insignificant piece of play with no insight whatsoever. Like if Cleverley loses the ball I don't even bother refreshing for a few minutes because I know there will be a page and a half of 'ffs Cleverley' comments. What's the point?

I'm not blaming anyone in particular, it's impossible to fix really.

i take you not a united fan right?

how do you feel about not being able to sign a apt Suarez replacement?? because Sturridge will eventually get injured this season and Lambert is just

Not sure how that reply in any way counters my point. I wasn't being a WUM just posing an opinion that has been echoed by many United fans on here.

We need a German player in our squad. Preferably Hummels.

Smalling and Jones simply aren't good enough to both play imo. Everyone bangs on about them being the future of our defence but if they're good enough they're old enough. And they aren't good enough. How much longer can we give them?

The Glazers are given too much stick. They have given the club substantial amounts of money but the managers and chairmen of recent years have spent this money terribly at times.

I’m tired of people using Real Madrid as an example of how you shouldn’t be doing business, when it’s the other way around (as far as football reasons are concerned). They’ve done extremely well on transfer market in the last few years- since 2009 they’ve bought: Ronaldo-Alonso-Benzema-Di Maria- Khedira- Coentrao- Varane- Modric- Lopez- Carvajal- Bale. Bolded names are players who started CL final, total number of 9. Lopez was excellent last season in La Liga, Alonso was one of the most important figures for them in years (didn’t play in the final because of suspension). Add to that Ozil (bought for 16M, sold for 44M, he wasn’t exactly bad either) and some good prospects in Callejon, Isco and Illara, and a number of squad players. Last but not least, they’ve just signed Kroos and Rodriguez.

Yes there was a number of failures (Kaka, Sahin- fee combined 68M £, a little less than what we paid for Fellaini and Mata), but if we consider how good this team is right now, I would say their record is pretty good.

For comparison you can take a look how we’ve done in the transfer market since 2009.

All in all the only thing that matters for us- supporters- is that whether a player improves the team or not. Let the money talk for the clubs interested.

Note that I am aware it’s easier for clubs like Real Madrid or Barca attract players, but the point stands- they (RM) have done very good in the transfer market.

This confuses me

It seems the club have the idea that they will develop into top class centre backs for us. However they simply aren't as it stands. If a player is good enough (like Januzaj) then he should play even though he is only 19. With Jones and Smalling they aren't good enough but the club play them because they are young.

What other top teams in Europe would them two start in defence for?

that was a wum comment because it is just 1 game. Arsenal lost their first game against villa last year and still went on to lead the table. And the united fans you are mentioning are just overreacting over said game. If you pay attention you will see that they are the same ones making outrageous comments after every loss. yes the team has some holes and some injured players but it is still the 1st game of the season with the transfer deadline being 2 weeks away.

But Arsenal hadn't just come 7th. Saturday looked like last season - slow, ponderous, fairly easy to play against and leaky at the back. That's why it's not unreasonable to suggest it's a continuation of last season. It's LvG's job to turn things around but that's not happened yet.

Sorry, are you on drugs mate? Either that or you're in the wrong thread. We're not discussing Swansea game here.

The most unpopular opinion of all . .

I don't think the job was too big for DM simply because of the boots he was filling, he really was going to have to completely deconstruct a squad that was only capable of succeeding under SAF.

The character and ability of the players at the club are once again in question, even with a coach many believe to be one of the best in the world.

If you watched the Swansea game, you wouldn't know whether it was LVG or DM in charge and this was after a ridiculously successful pre season where confidence was up!

They aren't as it stands. But a balance needs to be struck between experience and developing talent. I think they have the talent to be given chances to develop. We've reaped the benefits of such an approach in the past. Not every player develops like Januzaj
