People saying we're the biggest club in the world with absolute conviction. Never understood it.

Surely that cant be the only measure though. Too many things come into it and a club like Real are definitely ahead of us.

So what most annoys you are fans making definitive statements on speculative matters because you've decided another definitive answer on the same speculative matter is the most accurate?

I'd agree, I wouldn't say we are the biggest, but a club should be measured by a variety of things, and there aren't too many that can be at the top of most charts, only several teams fall into that category as your PSG's, Cities have no history, so for me it is probably Real Madrid but there are areas in which it's fair to say we are bigger, but it's perhaps the importance of those areas in relation to the weighing of a club.

Is the best band the one who sells the most concert tickets, albums or wins the most awards or critical acclaim?

I dont know how you concluded that it annoys me. I couldnt care less if poster X believes club Y are the biggest club in the world. Seeing as this is a United forum and I disagree with us being the biggest club, I'm putting it in the unpopular opinion thread.

Yep. No arguments there. I'm even absolutely fine with people saying we're among the biggest clubs with no real standout, a perfectly reasonable opinion. Its when "we are the biggest" is a definitive statement that I struggle to understand the reasoning behind it.

Every club has 'um, I know some 'pool supporters that genuinely believe they are now the biggest, same with City, which is even more of a cheek..

That analogy doesn't really work. The question would rather be which band is the BIGGEST - and the only way to quantify that would be albums sold, tickets sold, etc. There are dozens of all-girl punk bands nobody's heard of who are clearly far better than Bieber - but Bieber is obviously bigger.

But tickets and albums are completely different things. A band who sold 1m albums could play the O2 and a band who sold 750,000 albums could play Wembley. Most sold albums and most tickets sold dont necessarily go hand in hand so you could have a band who sells more tickets and another who sells more albums. How do you decide who is bigger on that?

Nobody at the club has a clue who to buy apart from a young left back who we couldn't force through before the world cup and an injured midfielder who won't be fit for months.

I wouldn't say thats unpopular, just incorrect.

Do you truly believe this? I actually doubt it. Its more about you just having a little moan at the lack of transfers...

Bit like the comment I read earlier that said "its embarrassing" that we haven't bought anyone yet.

I'm allowed an opinion. Hence why this is the "unpopular opinions" thread.

Well...that depends on definitions, I guess. In most cases how popular you are determines both how many tickets you sell AND how many albums you sell. Some artists tour more extensively than others, put more effort into their live acts, etc. But generally the equation is fairly simple: Popular = sells a lot of albums, fills stadiums. Not so popular = sells less albums, fills stadiums to a lesser extent.

Which band is the biggest? The one that generates the most in total, I guess: tickets sold + albums sold + downloads registered + whathaveyou. The biggest football club in the world would be the one with the most fans - would be the obvious answer. But how do you determine which club that is at any given time? Could be a close one - and IS a close one, I'd say.

While Danny Welbeck's a good player and could be a very good, useful one, I don't think he'll ever be world class or good enough to be relied upon to lead the line for us over a whole season. That might not be too unpopular though.

Safe standing ain't happening. Ever. Let it go.

Not sure that's so much unpopular - something like "Safe standing should never happen" would be more fitting. This is more just a bit of an odd claim - I'm pretty confident there's a gradual movement towards it, will be a few years yet though.

For a guy who's done absolutely nothing yet and has had some high profile failures, there's already too much blind faith being shown to LVG and his "ways"/"methods".

We've been very poor in the transfer market for years now. Missing out on top targets and then ignoring or missing players who would drastically improve us. Vidal/Strootman could have been had for 15m each, Pogba should have been given his new deal and Modric didn't cost much more than hairbrushhead and if reports are accurate Fabregas could be off to Chelsea for a bit more than 30m, that's not even mentioning the Thiago/Herrera saga along with desperation bids for Khedira/De Rossi. Inexcusable to have not picked up at least 1 of these.
We've been rudderless for years with no clear plan and an overwhelming amount of deadwood.

Van Gaal will steady the ship somewhat, but United will struggle to make top four given the strength of other sides.

Diego Costa is a good but not exceptional player.

Wilshere will be seen as on a par with Ramsey at the end of next season.

Edinson Cavani will be the PL's leading goal scorer in 2014/15.

Unpopular here certainly, but a very fair prediction as things stand.

Diego Costa is a good but not exceptional player.

Agreed - though in the proposed Chelsea side next season he might not need to be exceptional to be very effective.

Wilshere will be seen as on a par with Ramsey at the end of next season.

You think Ramsey's injury problems are going to be that bad?

Edinson Cavani will be the PL's leading goal scorer in 2014/15.

I thought Arsenal were signing Benzema? How are they going to fit in Cavani as well in their all-conquering campaign next season?

Who would even benefit from that rumour? Go visit Auswitch and tell us it didn't happen.

Oh I've been, mate. Smoke and mirrors.

If you find that controversial then this will truly blow your mind; Shaznay was the best All Saint.

You wouldn't have liked the 80's if you think that....

I liked the blonde one best. Cant remember what she was called. Not the sisters - the other one.

Ryan Giggs is an unpleasant person, whose career I hugely respect but whom I strongly dislike on a personal level.

Don't buy into Smalling and Jones being half as good as some make out on here. If anything, Smalling has possibly regressed and was horrible last night against Equador. Some still want to believe that the duo will become some sort of brilliant partnership; I have to disagree, strongly.

Getting rid of Paul Pogba was the right thing to do, and only feels bad because we've been shite in the transfer market ever since

Lack of CL makes it harder to sign players than people seem to think.

Jones is overrated on here.

We'll not get Top 4 next season as easily as most seem to presume.

- While it would've been better if they didn't use LBO, the Glazers have been decent owners relative to other non-sugar daddy owners.
- As a CEO, Woodward has been doing a great job. Revenue pouring in and the debt now well and truly under control.
Last summer transfer windows was a dud bit he only just started the job. Since then, he signed Mata, sacked Moyes and hired LVG. He even gave Giggs a run as interim manager and got him the AM role.

Real took our best player off us just as he was entering his prime. They are bigger, whether we like to admit it or not (or comfort ourselves with "it was his childhood dream" fairy stories).
