United under LvG: verdict so far!

I might be wrong, but I think he has only ever used 3 at the back at Ajax. Talking about club football only.
Yes, and that was 3-4-3, actually switching during the game from 4-3-3 by having one CB moving forward to create a match or a majority in midfield.

What I really like is that he stresses the point of having leaders on the pitch; players like Rooney, Carrick, Blind and even Smalling are becoming much more vocal figures that seem to enjoy taking on responsibility. Having a 2nd and 3rd captain etc. really helps in that respect.

I've noticed that too.

Rooney has always been quite vocal, but I've noticed midfielders coming to Carrick for instruction in the last couple of games and Smalling giving Valencia direction on where he should be positioned. Good to see

I don't know about anyone else but I for one expected someone to pop in a VCR then copy it hundreds of times and post it to our home addresses.

I've been refreshing my inbox all day waiting for those transcripts I was promised.

Finally we hit the 2 points per game mark.

62 points in 31 games under LVG. Moyes got 57 in 34. Progress.

Aye, now we're getting into the latter stages of the season, the difference between Moyes and LVG is really starting to show.

We didn't play as well, as against Pool and Spurs but it was good to see that we can still win games comfortably when we didn't. We kept on cranking up the pressure and eventually we got through before half time.

The calmness he's installed into the team is just wonderful. Plus the little combos he's got going all over the pitch with Herrera + Mata + Valencia on one side, Blind + Carrick + CB in the middle and Rooney + Fellaini + Young upfront.

I think we generally play better against a team that press us rather than a team that sits back as there is more space and more players free. We have struggled when a team sits back and hits us on the counter.

With that said. This is one of the best I've seen us against a side sitting deap and still having dangerous pace and goal threat on the counterattack. I think it was a good all round performance. Not mind blowing but really good.

The last 3 wins have been massive for us, especially today.

Villa easily could have been a trap game for us coming off of the international break and van Gaal made sure the team was ready. He has instilled calmness and belief into the players and top 4 is looking all the more likely. I'm very pleased so far.

I love the little honey nut clusters he's built. Herrera, Mata and Valencia is by the far the most.. appetising.

I echo this point.

There was a moment in the first half where Villa were really pressing Valencia but he looked over his shoulder and calmly prodded it to Carrick who was able to come away with it. I cant help but feel had that been last season or even under SAF he would have been hoofing that into row Z. We just look a better team all over the pitch, a team that actually wanted to play football! Which hasnt been the case for the last 3 seasons...

It was looking dire after the Swansea defeat and the loss in the FA cup at home against Arsenal. All credit to him for turning it around in the last 3 games. Changed the mood completely.

A finish in the top 4 would be a good stablizer, another season outside the top 4 would have put us in a really precarious position. Still a long way to go though. We need a better planned transfer window and serious title challenge next season, and then we can say we are back and sing Louie's praises.

You could argue even longer than 3 seasons.

I don't agree that we need to challenge for the title before we sing LVG's praises. Look at where where we were last season, 7th fecking place, under a clueless moron of a manager with talk of us spending years in City's shadow ect. Now we're above them and confident as ever going into a derby next weekend.

I guess we have different opinions on the matter. I need to see more before I can truly say that VG has brought back the good times. 3rd/4th was the minimum we aimed for after spending 150m in the summer. I am not going to jump with joy like Arsenal fans at the bare minimum. It would be a relief more than anything.

We need to finish as high on the table as we can and then have a good transfer window. VG needs to fortify the foundation he has laid and then build on it.

His job has just begun. Going forward the expectations won't be as low as they were this season.

I don't disagree that we should be challenging for the title sooner than later, but the 'good times' under SAF, possibly the best manager of all time are gone. That level of consistency should not be expected to be repeated, as it would be simply unfair on LVG or any manager that takes over.

Not the title frequency, but Manchester United should more often than not be in the company of clubs like Barca, Bayern, Real etc, not slugging it out with Liverpool and Spurs for top 4 spots. That's the least we can do to continue Fergie's legacy.

You have a point, our last great footballing side was probably 2009. After which it got worse and worse. But i still maintain our football in 2011 and the start of 2012 wasnt bad... After that 6-1 to City SAF clearly focused more on the result than the performance.

I'm still a bit unsure about LVG, the reason being is because I think he stumbled on this winning formula by accident with RVP being injured and Di Maria suspended. I hope we are not going to see Van Persie simply walk back into the starting 11 next week.

Results and performance wise the last 3 games have simply been fantastic, Rooney should have gave that damn speech before the Arsenal game, it would have been nice to get some silverware this season and stop Arsenal overtaking our FA Cup record.

Di Maria was fit today and he resisted temptation to start him over Young - who has fully deserved his spot. I'd be extremely surprised to see Robin walk back into the team. Stumbled or not, van Gaal has discovered an effective formula and I don't think he'll be rushing to change it.

I feel we have that 'big team' feel back, a little bit. Now teams should be coming to OT and expecting not to have more than 30% of the ball. And thats exactly how I like it!

His philosophy is working and we're playing possession football but at least now we're getting the attacking part right, it's not just keeping the ball now. We have purpose in our possession.

van Gaal said something like, first you're doing good things but you're unconscious, then you start learning to do things consciously but that leads to doing bad things consciously until it progresses into being able to consciously do all the good things you used to do while you're unconscious. I think it was in his last interview, he said that he hopes that we're in that last phase.

By conscious he of course means instinct.

Well how do you explain Matas resurgence on the right wing? The whole "he stumbled onto a winning formula" is a insulting to a man who's had such a good career in the game. It also ignores the fact that he has a history of setting his teams up like this.

Given the injuries we've had this season and new signings its not outside the realms of possibility that he just needed time to assess everything and fit the players into a working system. Which all happened to manifest when we had our biggest games of the season.

Agree with this.

You could see in the first half, with the way they were hitting hopeful balls forward while we penned them in, Villa's players had no belief they'd win the game. There was just no conviction in their passing, even when they had chances to counter. That's how it should be when teams come to United. When Moyes was the manager sides came to United trying to end old hoodoos, and pick up their first Old Trafford wins for decades. That's done with now. We're on the way back. Its true, to some extent, Louis has stumbled on his best shape and side. However, the pressing, the way we use triangles, that's all his philosophy. I've recovered my faith in the man.

He and Mourinho are streets ahead of the other managers in the league IMO. I still think Mourinho may be better unfortunately but I certainly hope not.

If anyone told me on at the start of the season that Fellaini and Young would be key players for Champions League spot race, I'd laugh their heads off.

he has a point though, this lineup wouldn't have happened. We look good due to Rooney being upfront again, and far away from midfield

This, certainly. Have to respect Wenger for his team building of course but in any given specific match I'll take Mourinho or LVG over him. Pellegrini not of the same quality. Rodgers and Pochettino show quite a bit of promise, but aren't anywhere near the conversation at this point. Interested to see what Koeman does if he sticks around at Southampton for a couple seasons at least.

I think Mourinho might be better in some aspects, but LVG suits our current situation better imo.
