United under LvG: verdict so far!

Talks about balance, but then baffles me with his team sheet and formation

That is oddest thing about him. We played with only one proper midfielder and two virtually identical players up top.

I'm starting to think this myself. The guy has lost the plot. We weren't this boring under Moyes, were we?

We were worse and at this point last season we were in free fall.

Herrera may as well go on holiday until the summer when a new manager comes in and actually appreciates what he brings to a team.

I'm not sure if he's the man to glue us back together, never mind take us forward.

I'm starting to think this myself. The guy has lost the plot. We weren't this boring under Moyes, were we?

No, we weren't. Moyes also didn't spend 150m and play everyone out of position and then wonder why we were shit.

I don't think it's the results people are most angry about. We have only lost 1 game in 17, and have spent most of the season in 3rd place. We aren't even that far off 2nd place now. The issue is that we are not entertaining. But I am sure it will come seen as though you can't take a team that came 7th, spend 150m and sell loads of players and expect instant majestic football and a title challenge with players such as Di Maria and Rojo coming from entirely different leagues. Maybe you have to dig deep, try and get top 4 and look for a trophy on the side - look at Man City in 2010/11 who spent loads, were branded boring and had wobbles where they looked like not finishing in the top 4, for example after a 2-0 loss to Chelsea in March 2011 they were only 1 point above 5th - finished 3rd and won the FA Cup - next season were unreal and won the league - top scorers and very, very eye catching with the likes of David Silva who were patchy the season before and not the player they looked like in Spain, becoming brilliant. .

^ That is the positive view.

The negative view is that we are playing poor all the time, we should be higher up in the league and we are not because Van Gaal is not getting the best out of his team. If you spend 150m on a team you should be challenging for the title and the fact we are 13 points off the top and below Southampton is simply a joke and there are major concerns about the future health of this team.

To be fair I believe the first post more.

A substitute is a player who is brought on to the pitch during a match in exchange for an existing player. Substitutions are generally made to replace a player who has become tired or injured, or who is performing poorly, or for tactical reasons (such as bringing a striker on in place of a defender).

...most competitions only allow each team to make a maximum of
three substitutions during a game

Some old men tend to do weird things in late stages of their lives, he looks really like a fool now, continuously playing players out of positions etc.. three months..

And we are very lucky that all big teams had very poor start to season apart Chelsea.. in Moyes season Van Gaal would be now 7th also..

I'm losing my faith. He is extremely annoying in his stubborness and will to prove himself rather than make team actually work. He keeps blabbering about balance and then sends a team out with 3 forwards and a winger.

He has isolated our most creative and complete central midfielder for no apparent reason too.

Rooney needs to play in Falcao's position.. . Falcao needs to be on the bench.. not sure why he is still playing..

Sorry maybe i am fool but i believe in LvG,actually in general i believe in managers. What i mean is,lets just say we sack him,new guy comes,no way i could handle repeat lines like:"Will need time to get to know my players" or "Every player will get his chance to prove himself, after that period we will see what we need" etc.

No way i can drop 100% blame on LvG when i watch our players and how they play. For some 5 yard pass is like SCI-FI,i mentioned in match day thread, there was a situation where Blind had a go at Jones,Blind was open and yet Jones decided to pass back to DDG,sometimes you can spot those from pre Moyes/LvG era.

Moyes lost against Liverpool, Spurs.. and all top teams.. so helped other top teams pull away... Could that also be the reason we were 7th last year?

I don't get LVG to be honest, how can he be so blind to things? The whole world can see Rooney can't play in midfield, yet he does it every week for 90 mins. His in-game management is even worse.

The last two United managers thought the exact same, it's not that radical.

It's extremely worrying if we're being honest. It was reasonable to expect some sort of improvement after our injury crisis but we seem to be getting worse as time goes on.

Not at all the same thing, SAF would play there for a game or two, same with Moyes. LVG on the other, he plays there every fecking game and it's starting to annoy me.

We do, worrying that he basically has no idea what his best team is. However what is keeping me somewhat convinced in van Gaal is how he's ruthlessly dealt with most of the team that stank it up vs MK Dons and how our attitude has visibly improved vs. last year.

Did LVG say that in the second half we played football? cause I saw a few minutes of frantic stuff followed by some long ball tactics.

SAF is on record I think saying Rooney would move into midfield one day and it's pretty much what their last fallout was over. I agree Rooney doesn't work there but I do think he's our only player who can spread the ball out wide quick enough.

12 wins in 24 games... same as Moyes but we are 4th.

I can't decide on LVG, i hate him right now,but a 4-0 win against Burnley can change all that, i think we are capable of finishing 4th but it will go to the last day.

The way the fans are reacting it won't be long before he loses the players. They won't be liking the way things are going.

You are right but that doesn't change the fact that a lot of teams had really strong run last year. It was maybe the most competitive season in premier league history in terms of how many teams played for champions league spots. This year it's really easier to be sitting in top 4 due to big teams dropping a lot of points in the first half of the season and the Liverpool teams out of form..

Can anyone actually see him leave in the summer?
Yes. I think that if we don't get top 4 (which looks very possible) he'll be sacked IMO. Mediocricity shouldn't and I think it won't be tolerated. So far Van Gaal has been mediocre on performances and talking bullshit on press conferences.

Would be interested to hear other people's opinions on this.

Sorry to bring up Moyes but here goes. He was probably the main culprit for our shambolic transfer activity. His negativity in press conferences and things Rio has said about him since makes it easy to believe he sapped dressing room morale. I have to ask though, do you all think that given then players at his disposal he strayed overly from far the best set up possible?

He played Cleverley far too much and could have experimented with formations that made use of our surplus of 10s. I was calling for Jones instead of Cleverley with Mata much further infield and upfield with license to change with Rooney, so something more resembling a 4231 than a 442. There's no way of telling that would have worked much better than the lame rigid 4-4-2 really, would have been nice to see something different and get fecking Cleverley out of the team is all. And its not an especially huge deviation from what he was playing.

With LVG though we can all see there are plenty of alternative set ups available that would dramatically improve us, no?

He's sacked if we don't get top 4. Not getting top 4 could be disastrous for us i feel as i could see certain players wanting out and it will be harder to bring in the kind of quality we will need.

He still cant find the right balance which is extremely frustrating. The injuries have played a part in that but we're still seeing extremely odd decisions and really poor performances. We have more fight in us this season but the football hasn't been any better and we look clueless away from home. It's pretty worrying to be honest.

Because he keeps picking stupid fecking teams with players out of position.

The lack of balance is all his own doing.

If we miss out on top 4 he'll be gone. Just like Moyes.

In another thread I said we stick with LvG if we a) get top 4 or b) finish outside the top 4 but he gets us playing good football.

The style of play hasn't improved so his only saving grace will be finishing in the CL positions. If he doesn't do that either, he should suffer the same fate as the last man who gave us dull and unsuccessful football.

I'm generally against sacking managers too quickly, but we shouldn't be accepting poor football if it doesn't yield an end result.

Agreed on all counts.

He only has himself to blame for not getting too four.

We look clueless away from home and I just don't get it. I made a thread about that a month ago and the usual muppets screamed knee jerk.

But I wouldn't fancy us to beat a league 2 team away from home.

According to Guillem Balage he doesn't pay as much attention to detail in training as he used to, and the players are a bit confused or doesn't quite understand what they should do. This may be bollocks but if not his "philosophy" isn't as detailed as we thought.
