United in this Summer transfer window

The good news is that even if the bids are all pathetic, Moyes really, really wants a midfielder.

And either Woodie Wouldfecker will learn he needs to take a different approach, or SAF will stand in and give him a slap, and find someone capable.

Very true. I don't believe in this "embarrassing" malarkey - but our tactics this transfer window have definitely been a bit odd. Still - maybe we don't know something that the club's keeping hush about?

I think we'll sign someone. I just don't think it'll be Fellaini AND Herrera.

Same here. Moyes made it pretty clear from the start that he knew we needed a midfielder and I don't think he (and Woodward) will want to come out with nothing from this transfer window. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if we did something slightly out of nowhere on deadline day.

I'm guessing people are still "working hard" at brining in new signings...

In all my years of supporting United, I can recall a summer full of rejections such as this. We will soon be called Eddie's Desperados.

SSN and Jim must be loving this, its going to be a crazy last couple of days

Yeaaaaah. That's definitely going to happen. I'm staying optimistic that the 'out of nowhere' thing will be pleasant. But... It's not feeling great.

The more this thread grows the more amusing and yet not amusing it gets. Over 2.4k of posts about United in the summer transfer window and so far all talk and no action. I'm in the not so hopeful category. We seem to have been so ridiculously slow this transfer window that it is hard to comprehend. "Working hard in the transfer window" with beer in hand and a cigar in the other!

Other clubs have transformed their teams with multiple signings. We only need to tweak and yet even that is not happening! The only official news we have heard is:
1) £25m bid for Fabregas, upped to maybe £28m
2) £12m bid for Baines
3) £28m bid for Baines and Fellaini

All of the above is laughable, except for us who are going to see no one sign at this rate!

There is at-least one poster here who would be delighted with this.
Barton is utter tosh. Would be quite happy with Barry and he would proveyou wrong but let's not get into that since we won't get him.

It is a tad shitty that we are at this stage of the window and we still haven't signed a central midfielder.

We'll sign Fellaini and Baines, Herrara too if we're competent.

Or rather, if we are willing to pay silly money (at very least in the Baines and Herrera cases). If that's what you mean by 'competent', great.

Sometimes you have to be willing to pay silly money though, you can't just wait for the market to adjust itself to your values. This is especially true when there's only a few days of the transfer window left.

We were forced to pay too much for Carrick when we signed him but I doubt too many are complaining about that now.

Moyes:
"It might be busy in the next few days. I hope we do a little bit of business, but I couldn't guarantee that," he added.
But he would not go into any depth when asked directly about links with Athletic Bilbao's Anders Herrera.
Moyes said: "I wouldn't disclose any names, just let the clubs deal with it and we'll try and do it on a professional manner."

Key point the disclaimer: "I couldn't guarantee that"

We've apparently been trying all summer with Moyes suggesting we would do something. Now we are apparently doing something, but without guarantees. Sounds like backtracking!

Nah, Baines and Fellaini we'll complete with relative ease, imo. Everton will want it done ASAP so they can get replacements, we won't wanna fanny around too much and the players both want to leave.

The Herrara is the 'if we're competent one' shouldn't be too hard a deal to conclude in terms of the transfer, but the tax issues around it need to be skilfully avoided.

Nothing is guaranteed in the transfer market though. It's not just a case of just going out and getting who you want, especially if you're targeting players from abroad. Other clubs will be interested and no matter how close a deal is, it could fall through at the last minute.

Will we get a David Moyes doing a 'Arry' and conducting an interview through his car window, confirming that we have agreed a fee on a player??

One can dream

Does Anderson have a future if we sign both Fellaini and Herrera? (not counting my chickens, I don't actually expect them both to come)

Carrick plays when he's fit. Cleverley is capable. You don't spunk £25m on a player or two if they're not going to play regularly. Anderson seems the only one who will really suffer from this, added to his lack of Premier League action despite some staleness in midfield..

On a side note I'm not particularly bothered about Anderson 'making it', I think that ship sailed a long time ago.

i think he does, theres 5 players there for 2-3 positions so if it happens we can call our central midfield options healthy for the first time in a long time.

I think anyone still criticising moyes at this stage can be confirmed as someone just looking to complain. He came in and immediately identified central midfield in the same terms so many of you have been begging to be recognised. He's going after an endless amounts of targets people were questioning if we even knew existed and the market is tough. but two players like that would be fantastic. the latest ive seen is that its "desperate" and "are we just contacting everyone?"....3 months ago people were dying for us to contact everyone and anyone with a good midfielder. Cant win with some

I doubt it. We have already annoyed Everton quite a bit this summer. They have the Sky money and are not desperate for cash. They are not about to hand over their best players to us without taking us to the cleaners.

Even the release clause for Herrera is pretty steep for an uncapped 24 year old - and it's not at all certain that it would be enough overall considering the way the clauses work and it seeming pretty unlikely that the player will try to force a move.

I think we will get Fellaini and not the others. If we do buy them we will have to pay way over the odds.

Yeah, Moyes certainly seems to be going for the types of players we'd want, bit unfair to criticise him for that. Whoever is handling the transfer negotiations is fair game though, some of our reported bids seem a bit erratic to say the least.

You've saved me needing to talk the sense!

Everton will be very keen to avoid selling at this late stage. These are two players critical to their chances. £40m in the bank is useless if they can't get replacements. I'm not saying it can't be done, but I think Everton don't have enough in their squad to be doing this last minute. That's not to say they haven't already identified targets as replacements, so maybe a Spurs type scenario of buy before sell. We will just have to wait and see what happens, but as you say this is far from clear cut.

Equally on Herrara, their is nothing to suggest they are willing to sell until the player first says he wants to go and then the release clause is activated.

It depends what Moyes has got in mind and whether the players in question will rise to the occasion. If Moyes decides to implement a 4-5-1 system then we would have a player per each position + Ryan Giggs. The second point may look redundant but its not. Let us not forget that at one point Fletcher was our 6 choice option behind world class players Scholes and Giggs, English internationals Carrick and Hargreaves and new boy Anderson. He ended up a crucial part of the team a few years later
