United in this Summer transfer window

Although there is a a few days of the transfer window left, for me it seems that it is unlikely for us to sign anyone apart from Fellaini.

With Eddie's track record and generally the length of times it takes to conclude a deal, especially with foreign based players i just can't see anyone other than Fellaini joining us.

Sounds like a good idea tbf.

But seeing as you're here, please tell me who will win the EC for us if we decide to take part in it?

We've a better squad than the 10/11 team that reached the final. We would've beaten Real last season were it not for a bad red.

I agree we definitely do not have the best squad in the CL but we're not as bad as you're making us out to be.

I'm not saying we're bad. We're definitely good enough to win the league - I think we're 2 players short in Europe.

Not really, we just need some more midfield options but it doesn't need to be anything spectacular i.e. Fabregas

We have enough 'class' to compete in Europe and win the league

I disagree but I respect your candor.

I didn't know getting beat comfortably by a decent side is on the same level as failing to win the CL nowadays. You learn something new everyday on the Caf.

Of course. But I don't see how this is relevant to you claiming we'd get beat by any decent side in Europe. And not just beat, but quite comfortably beat.

Because we haven't strengthened and we have a manager with very little European experiance
One of the top tier european clubs would knock us out over 2 legs.

Getting knocked out by a top tier European team or getting beat quite comfortably by any decent side are 2 wildly different things.

For what it's worth, I don't think we're quite good enough to win it. We can win it, but we'd need some luck. However, on our day we can definately knock out a top tier European side. With everyone fit and in good form we can give any team a run for its money. A QF or even SF finish isn't unlikely.

The real worry for me that people seem to be glossing over is that we've not been at our best - even domestically - for the past 2 seasons. Yes, we won the league last year but can anyone honestly say they weren't at least bemused by our midfield being utterly overrun against half the league?

If not for RVP's ability we'd of been absolutely f*cked. We went behind in a ridiculous number of matches - hardly the sign of great quality. And not only against the big powerhouse clubs.

There are countless threads on here about our 'zombie movement' and why we can't control matches and we we're conceding so much.

Almost every pundit in the land was baffled how Fergie pulled that squad along last season, and now he's gone. So some of our truly elite players are a year older (Ferdinand, Carrick, Evra, RVP, Vida) a couple of our better players are disgruntled (Rooney, Nani) and we're Fergie-less. And the management/board/who f*cking ever decide not to strengthen? It beggars belief.

Signings aren't just about a single player. It's about motivating, refreshing and perception.
It would be entirely different in our own club had shaped the narrative to be: "Our club is already world class, and we won't be needing to add to it this summer. The youth are coming through and ready to be the next class of 92" or something along those lines - but first Fergie, then Moyes have both admitted we lack strength.

We don't know whose fault it is, but whoever it is should be removed from having signing responsibility before the next window. They had a job and they didn't do it, simple as.

Thing is, Jose wanted Rooney & when he didn't get him he went out & brought someone else, Eto'o, & it happened pretty quickly, within a few days.

We wanted Fabregas, but when we didn't get him, pretty much no obvious plan B.

A deal for Eto'o was pretty straight forward, Anzhi are shipping all of their big earners out. Everton don't want to sell their players and have no reason to unless we pay top dollar. We can afford them, yes, but we don't have money on tap like Chelsea who can just snap their fingers and sign someone on ludicrous wages.

I'm not talking about Everton players & anyway Eto'o is on a free so the wages aren't really an issue.

Is this some kind of wind-up? Do you think free transfer means the player plays for free?

Alright I'll spell it out for you, unless you're trying to wind me up?

If Chavs sign Rooney for £40M on a 4 year deal, that's £10M a year in amortisation, around £200K a week. If they have to pay Eto'o £50K a week more than they were going to pay Rooney, they've made a big saving. If Eto'o extends his contract for another year, well I think you can work it out for yourself...

I still don't understand the ease with which we won the league in the end given this. It was so weird; I can't wrap my head around it.

Sometime, in the future, I'd love to read an official, unedited version of everything that happened at our club this summer.... from SAF leaving, to Moyes, to Woodward, to transfers to Rooney...

I imagine it would make for fascinating reading.

Wait there, Mourinho has taken all summer to get in Etoo. The pursuit of Rooney took months!

Thank feck that I have nothing on deadline day - because clearly it's going to be a day where we sign someone surely.

it's over. Now we must focus on our squad and go for it.

The Eto'o deal went through quickly because Anzhi wanted to sell and had no intention of messing around. Transfers only get held up if the selling club feels like it's worth being arses about it or the bidding club wants to take the piss. It's difficult to tell from the outside how amenable Athletic are to this offer, but United's bid doesn't seem derisory for once.

This is the first day I've woken up and actually believed we aren't going to sign anyone. fecks sake.

What? Most of us have thought that for ages.

It's basically today or Monday now, with the weekend games.

And we're half way through today!

Yeah but while I regularly told myself nothing was happening, I always thought that we'd pull something out of the hat. Today it's finally dawned on me that we're going to have another whole season without buying a midfielder. It boggles the mind.
