United in this Summer transfer window

I personally would not be all that upset if we bought Fellaini as long as he was a squad player, as he is most definitely not the hole player he liked to think his last season and he can and should only act as cover for Carrick.

He wouldn't be a squad player because he would instantly become our second best midfielder, and he could both partner and cover for Carrick

I would be quite happy with Fellaini at this point

I wouldn't necessarily be happy but I'd take him, think we need someone who can cover for Carrick and come in next to him and shore things up more than we need a creative player, in terms of winning the league.

Yeah I agree, that's why I would have liked us to go for Gustavo as well as he could both partner and cover for Carrick. But we don't seem to be linked to him at all.

Yh, or there must be a young player in that role somewhere. That's what I've not understood over these past few seasons, our seeming inability to identify someone from another league/smaller team who could step up seeing as we try to avoid going for established players. a younger understudy to Carrick would be alright even if we didn't get a Fellaini/Gustavo, just someone who can take over his role when he can't play and isn't a novice to the role, i.e. Jones.

That is the scary thing, that we pay scouts to look out for players. I think they just read the papers and go and look at the obvious big names they link us with. Moyes might be wishing he'd brought all his scouts with him. Ours don't appear to be able to find a midfielder anywhere in the world.

Can someone explain to me why are we finding it so hard to sign a midfielder? It seems Spurs and every club in the world bar United are an exception to this notion

Maybe, feels like they're more just waiting for the perfect player. I could understand why they didn't sign anyone for a few seasons as there were a fair few players who were having injuries and we'd be hoping they would get over them, plus they probs factored in Pogba until recently, but I just thought there would be some targets at smaller clubs/leagues that we may have identified. Still early days yet in terms of this window, I'm only saying it because Moyes has mentioned how it would be good to get players whilst they were still in pre season, and so doesn't look like those sorts of targets were in place.

It seems we had a very short list and are now scrabbling about trying to find someone. They should have had a extensive list of who they wanted and if they could get them. We seem to be targeting players we had little chance of getting, now is that a deliberate tactic to make them look as though they are trying?

I'm actually somewhat jealous of Spurs right now! (Glaston's gonna love that!) Dembele, Paulinho and now seemingly Capoue all for very reasonable prices. Just proves that the players are out there.

Nah I don't see that I think with Fabregas they got a sense that there was an opportunity and they went for it, I don't really think they made the most of the potential opp as the bids seemed quite low but I don't think it was just a media effort because I don't think they're that stupid to not know the media/fan reaction would be worse to them trying to signing him and failing publicly than just not trying at all.

What most people will retort is that they're not that much better than what we have, so there's no point. We're now caught in a bind where only the next Roy Keane or Paul Scholes will do, it seems.

Whilst I can understand the frustration in not bringing in a midfielder, surely our scouting network have unearthed enough absolute gems elsewhere in our squad to justify their existence?

In truth, I would say that it isn't directly the job of the scouting team to find the ideal 'top' midfielder. That comes down to the manager and coaches identifying the traits that a player already possesses that will suit our existing team and style. I can't see one of our scouts coming back with a report to Moyes which says "Messi and Ronaldo are good, as are Iniesta and Schweinsteiger"...

I remember reading that one area of the staff the club are said to be disappointed with is the scouting. Pretty sure it was expected Moyes would make wholesale changes to the scouting system.

That's was bugs me, when people say he has to better than what we've got. Well god help us if we can't find better than what we have. It's not just quality, it numbers we need.

I cant comment on Capoune, but Dembele is a better player then both Cleverley and Anderson, and would have been a brilliant signing. Quality and price wise. And from what I've seen of Paulinho, so is he. The fact he starts for Brazil, while Anderson hasn't been in the squad for 4 years, would only enhance that view.

It was so obvious we should have been after Dembele last season.

We were all screaming out for us to sign him when he tore us apart for Fulham. Did they listen, did they hell as like.

The only thing that I can say about Capoue is that he has a great engine and never gets tired  That alone should be enough for him to play ahead of Anderson.

Can't help but think Moyes and Woodward have played things badly so far.

If Moyes had come in and said the squad is already quality and we may or may not need new signings, then expectations would have remained calm.

To both come in, and start silly talk of "Unlimited" budgets, and how it "wouldn't be a problem" to spend huge on one player, and how there would certainly be signings, has written cheques they can't cash.
The overly public pursuit of Fabregas had us all confused at from the off, presuming that there must have been encouragement from someone...

now, we're a week off the season's start and nothing at all doing transfers wise. Bizarre,

Lads, we are champions, the window is still open and the season hasn't started. We need a midfielder or two, but no need to panic. We'll be alright.

I don't want to have a go at Ed as i am not sure of his qualities as a CEO but is it not possible to get Gill back for a few weeks to give him a hand on how to conduct a transfer and induce players to OT, i'm aware we have missed out on a few players in the past but it is getting a bit desperate now.

Also, we are due to play the big boys in the first few games so it would be good to have a couple of real quality midfielders signed up before then.

That the big problem, they have built our hopes up. If they had said it like you suggested and done their business on the quiet, we would have been thrilled with any signing made.

I am fairly sure people were criticizing Moyes after his first 2 press conferences for not being open enough about transfer targets and such. And now he's being criticized for speaking about his targets...

They weren't necessarily the same people though...

I think that was more a reaction to the likes of Chelsea, Barca, Real who flirt with players on other teams. The Rooney business has opened peoples eyes as to how underhand other teams can be. Moyes started off being coy then started spouting off about all our transfer dealings. He has to decide how he wants to play it and stick to it.

Very absurd window. We have one 31 year old midfielder that we can rely on. The future of two of our key players, Nani and Rooney, is uncertain. And we haven't resolved anything 2 days before the charity shield.

We're going to end up in the same situation as City last year. Had a few (1?) main target that we've missed out on, and we'll just be panic buying towards the end in an attempt to strengthen.

Thats the concern. People are saying 'guys don't worry we're champions, we'll be fine' but look at City last season. I know we won by a bigger margin than them, but their failure to adequately strengthen the team meant a lack of genuine competition to keep their established players on their toes, and they lacked quality depth in their squad. This season they've learnt their lesson and got business done early. I bet signing Navas for example gives Nasri a bit of a kick up the backside. It's not just about wanting a shiny new toy (though our midfield needs one) its about freshening up the squad, and I also think it'd be a boost for Moyes.

Responding to a post a few pages back now but why would we buy a midfielder who doesn't really improve on the options we already have just for the sake of buying a midfielder? This is the exact reason I came into this thread; though it is arguably less relevant now because of the oil barons and ridiculously rich clubs around, I think the mistake we made earlier this window was openly identifying the midfield as a place we need to strengthen. Granted, everyone has been saying that for a while but for us to also officially say that's what we think can only push prices up because

1. Clubs know we're on the market for a midfielder
2. Entice our rivals to buy quality midfielders to keep us from getting them
3. Because of the first two points, encourage selling clubs to cause a bidding war.

We're not going to get anywhere bidding £25m for players like Fabregas. I personally would not be all that upset if we bought Fellaini as long as he was a squad player, as he is most definitely not the hole player he liked to think his last season and he can and should only act as cover for Carrick.
Midfielders who are very good but aren't special would still be a big improvement over what we currently have.

The slight difference with city is our team will be different this season. New manager, Zaha in, Nani may actually play (technically not new but still) and a few youth players might get some time.
