United in this Summer transfer window

this poll is on the Sly website.
Just who is voting for anything but midfield and why the hell vote for a keeper

Goalkeepers (4%)
Full-backs (5%)
Centre-halves (8%)
Midfielders (73%)
Wingers (4%)
Strikers (6%)

The one thing that's bothered me for a few years with our midfield is the fact that we are willing to spend a decent amount of money on players with potential who may or may not develop into good players everywhere except for in midfield since Anderson in 2007.

Players like Gundogan and Modric have been bought for less than 20 million which is about what we spend on squad players these days and went on to become something special. In this window Paulinho and Strootman have moved on for reasonable prices and while theres no guarantees either of them will turn out good, we should've at least taken a chance on them considering our need for midfielders and our willingness to take chances in every other position. Had we taken a chance on Witsel a few years when he left Belgium for Benfica, we probably wouldn't be so desperate for a midfielder right now. And now that he's proven himself, we'd have to pay triple what we could've signed him for only 3 years ago.

When I started this thread I pictured that it would be a popular Summer thread where muppets would come to rejoice and celebrate. I didn't envisage that we would lose so many of our best and most loved muppets here.

I feel like Walt Disney when he bought his Mother a Hollywood mansion so that she could spend her last years in paradise, without knowing the place had some faulty wiring, which lead to gas fumes killing her shortly after.

I'd rather we just saved our money at this point instead of Moyes spunking £40M on two of his old Everton chuffers on deadline day. It's been a fecking disaster, lets not make it worse by throwing away money in desperation.

Relax ffs. Fellaini would greatly improve our CM.

I will wait til the transfer window closes before I make any judgement. It won't be a disaster if we do not make any additions to our squad but preferably for the sake of Moyes' worst critics, I hope he does make a couple of signings.

Yes it does but we'l just have to deal with the fact that our midfield isnt upto the mark atm and improve it even if it means not getting a fabregas in.

Wise words. We are very strong in other areas, with several players who will (in my humble opinion) take further steps and others who should (I realistically hope) get back on track compared to their efforts last season. The middle of the park is the most obvious weakness we have, and in one sense it makes it all the easier to deal with: Get a couple of players in, decent players, competent people - and we will have improved our options considerably. We can go for the real killer signing next summer. Outplaying Munich in the middle was never much of an option in Moyes' first season anyway. As long as we get some depth in (of reasonable quality, that goes without saying) we'll be in a good position to challenge for the league - and that is by far the most important thing here and now.

I still think we'll sign Fellaini and another midfield player

The time to judge the transfer window is September

Another positive is Anderson's improved fitness levels - I think this could potentially be his best season for us

I really want united to sign CM's. But can't think of a single available player that would greatly improve our squad. Thiago, Fabregas, Modric, Gündogan, etc. are all unavailable for various reasons.

Moyes has given him some good run outs hasn't he?

I think the lad has(had) so much natural ability but he's intrinsically lazy, not just in his application to his fitness but also in how he's applied himself to developing his game. Maybe a new manager coming in might recognize that and polish him into a diamond?

After the announcement of Fergie's retirement, I felt sure that we'd spend massively this summer.

There is still plenty of time for a signing or three, but realistically outside of mr Afro, who is available?

Think outside the box.

Heh. Cue the usual jokes and insults. I'll just say this: If that happens, if Ando actually after all these years emerges as a true, undeniable world beater...I will cry tears of joy. Or at least do a little dance. Few things would please me more.

The trouble with him, however, is that I suspect he lacks something in terms of natural ability - as a central midfielder. It's not in his blood, I fear: He doesn't push forward and fall back like a natural born CM. He still looks like a player who's far better suited to a more advanced position on the pitch. To me, that is - but God knows I've been wrong about players before.

Crazy that the handover from Fergie to Moyes may wind up being a massive success compared to that of Gill to Woodward.

Woodward has been nothing short of a complete embarrassment.

Hope he fecks off back to JP Morgan. fecking joke.

Kondogbia, Marchisio, Eriksen, Cabaye, McCarthy, Gustavo.

They'd all be available (I think). Any of them good enough?

I'd gladly take Marchisio, always liked him. Gustavo looks solid, as does Kondogbia (I haven't watched him much, but he's built like a tank and has a good rep, plenty of room for him to develop too), McCarthy looks very promising. Cabaye is obviously a decent player too, if the choice stands between him and nothing, I'd gladly take him on board. The only one I would have real reservations about is Eriksen, not sure how much he offers as a pure CM, nor how good he actually is - seems to me like he hasn't quite lived up to the hype.

So, yeah - give me Marchisio and Kondogbia, say. I'd be excited about that, and you wouldn't hear me mention Fellaini's name again. But players aren't necessarily a good fit just because they're "available" (and that term is relative to boot). Fellaini is a safe purchase under the circumstances, that counts in his favour no matter how one twists and turns it.

Eriksen's an AM in my book so take him out of the equation, though I'm surprised no-one's come for him.
Marchisio is a good player probably would do a job, probably not going to leave Italy.
Kondogbia looks too unfinished to me, not this season's answer.
Gustavo is a good player but lacks that extra bit of class (which is why Bayern moved on).
Cabaye is decent but not top4 material.
I'd have a punt on McCarthy, he's only 22 though there's work to be done.

What a load of horse shit. Why are people even pretending to know how well Woodward is performing in his role?

:wenger: Idiot.

Panic, let alone a meltdown, is not yet warranted. It may not even be warranted on September 2.

The squad is already very strong. Were we ever going to be strong enough to pull down Bayern's shorts? Nope, at least not unless you though we really were going to land both Fabregas and Ronaldo. But are strong enough already to compete ably with Chelsea and City? Yep.

But anyone who wants a squad strong enough to top our next closest combatant in the league by 8-10 points in May 2014 is asking for far too much. I'd love to see it, but it's just not going to happen. Take Fellaini (and for me, go in for Ross Barkley as well and we've got a helluva sensational young crew ready to develop into a very special squad over the next 2-3 seasons) and secure a prem trophy by the 2-4 points over Chelsea that it will likely be.

What a bag of shit, you dont know what he does, nobody knows what he does.

I think Moyes said that he was responsible for getting the transfers done. I suspect that Gill's role was the same... close the deal and not phaf around like we did with Thiago.

How did we mess around with Thiago? I'm sure we got told he preferred working with Pep and so we didn't pursue it any further.

If we're not in for Gustavo it's a fecking joke

Why? We're not really the type of club to go for a player who's become available out of the blue. There's been exceptions, van Persie and Bebe come to mind, but we tend to do our homework on targets and have had them evaluated extensively before making a move. I'd be surprised if we made a move for Gustavo...

I know he's made a mockery of the club from the moment he became CEO.

"Manchester United is a team of George Clooneys"

"I'm flying back to Manchester to complete transfer business"

Complete and utter imbecile who is out of his depth. Unless you're someone who believes signing the Official Noodle Partner of Manchester United in Eastern Asia TM is something to be proud of, Woodward has done absolute feck all to talk about.

His idiocy has done nothing but make us look incompetent at an incredibly important time for this club.

I'd be very happy with spending the necessary money on Fellaini and bringing in another player with potential (much like we did with Anderson back in the day.)
