United in this Summer transfer window

All fair points - yet we are still stuck at speculations; we simply do not know what prompted the club to go for Fabregas. I've touched on this topic before; it's not beyond the realm of possibility that we went in blindly for him for the sake of testing waters. But likewise, and many believe this to be the case, we could have been encouraged by something, or someone. Without knowing the true details we've seen people throw themselves to the fore pointing fingers and calling names. What good is that suppose to achieve?

You are right, speculation won´t archive anything, but by making the whole transfer saga so damn public, the United officials pushed the door wide open for them to happen. The media will jump on it and the result will be articles like the one in this thread. When it comes to the supporter, I can understand some of their reactions. United just lost their best manager in their history, someone who stood for stability like no other in the buisness. They yearn for some assurance and proof, that Moyes is big enough for the job and until now he has not delivered that. That may not be fair but in that situation it is not very easy to have blind faith. I admit, that I would be worried by now if I would be a main supporter of United, but thats just me.

Would fans rather see the club take a "low" risk bet on someone who is attainable but perhaps doesn't have the character to lead this team offensively and defensively? Would fans be satisfied if we spend 10-20m on another player who won't reach his true heights despite going five years strong and again, forcing us into the inevitable situation of looking at a player of Fabregas calibre for a second time? Wouldn't that, if anything, be embarrassing?

Absolutely not. United is right now not in the dire need of an absolute world class CM, because you already have a leader in the midfield in Carrick. What is needed right now, is a reliable partner for him and some cover, so he is not forced to play basically every game in the season. The first one that comes to mind would be Luiz Gustavo, who has fallen in the pecking order in Munich´s ridicoulus midfield. He is not world class, but a Brazilian international and has proven, that he can be a major help next to a creative CM and also lead the midfield by himself vs. smaller sides. He has already gotten the clearance to negotiate with other clubs and is right now in talks with Wolfsburg, a German midtable team (what a waste that would be). He would be absolutely realistic and still improve the midfield of United.

I´m not going to deny that Fabregas would be awesome, because him and Carrick would build one hell of a pair and he could also become Carrick´s eventual successor, but it does not seem to happen. He was a risky target to begin with, playing at a club, which is of the same calibre as United and having several years left on contract.

He is also not the only one. The reality is, that the market of world class CM is dry in this summer. All of them are either already playing at elite clubs or have contracts, which make it unrealistic to see them leave their current clubs. This could change in the next years, though. Targets like Gündogan or Vidal could become available in the next years.

There is of course also the possibility to get a good talent and develop him behind/next to Carrick into a world class CM. Most of the current world class CM are either homegrown or developed talents at their respective clubs after all.

I wouldn't say you're prone to making idiotic statements, but you've just pulled one out of the bag there.

I wouldnt say you of all people would be prone to biting on an clearly idiotic comment that I throw out there to catch a few people, but you have.

Well clearly I got that. I wouldn't have thought you were prone to not getting that I got that, but here you have.

We could do this for a while, couldn't we.

I also would not have thought that I was prone to not getting what I should have got too, must try harder. But I wouldn't have thought you were prone to the proneness of transfer muppetry prone...prone

Im not sure that makes any sense at all to be honest.

I think hindsight's going to tell us we were led up the garden path by both Ronaldo and Fabregas. It looks to me like we're being used to get big contracts or, in Fabregas' case, to solidify his position at Barca.

How could the club not know if that was the case though? Is it really so difficult to tell if an agent/player is bullshitting you, especially after a month of this?

If it was Gill I would have said no....but it's Ed Woodward so maybe?

I am convinced that we will get atleast two good players in before the window closes(3 if rooney leaves).
It is a little frustrating that things are going to happen so late, but I understand it. I am listing a few reasons for the same:
1. We have heard from Moyes, about the impact of new managers at top clubs. I know people don't buy that. But it makes sense.
2. I am sure the arrival of Martino has delayed the Fab decision. Plus signing top players from top clubs does take time.
3.The whole Rooney to Chelsea saga has also contributed to the delay. United and Chelsea will both play hardball for the signing fee, if we let him go, so it's gotta go right till the end. Based on that we will try to sign replacements.
4.Bale to Real, Ronaldo to us. If this is something we are looking at, it will take it's time.
One can argue that Chelsea and City have made signings. Well neither of those signings have been of top tier players. That makes a difference.

Yes but Chelsea now have a top-tier manager intrinsically entwined within their DNA, which for them is arguably more important. All of City's signings are extremely shrewd, and based purely on offering differing options to their new coach. Anyone doubting them or dismissing them as meh will be in for a surprise methinks. Top-tier signings i.e. ones that are harder to achieve or cost a shit-heap of money doesn't always translate into success for the team....think Veron, Berbatov, Kaka, Ibrahimovic. The most telling observation of City so far is that they have been quiet....quiet and effective. They have got their heads down and done their business with the minimum of bluster or fuss. They have also appointed a new coach so the contrast with United could not be sharper.

As for the numbers...
1. Does make sense but can't be an excuse
2. Martino's arrival will not make a difference....it's the Barca board who make those decisions
3. The club have outright rejected 2 bids for Rooney, shouldn't effect our incoming transfers...the money is available according to EW
4. I'm sure we have looked at it.....but it won't happen. Bale isn't Ronaldo's replacement, he's Real's riposte to Neymar.

Well, I suppose it depends. If a club is keen to sell, you'll soon find out if the player is serious. But if, as is the case with Fabregas and Ronaldo, their clubs don't want them to go, the player isn't forced into making a decision and/or committing himself to one of the other. They can string it along as long as they want safe in the knowledge that they win either way. I don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility that Fabregas' agent is telling us how much he wants to sign for us while also telling Barca that he wants to stay and has no idea where this is all coming from.

Didn't know this! We would be absolutely fecking barmy not to go in for Gustavo assuming this is true.

We've played a blinder, come the end of August desperation will be at such fever pitch for any signing that most fans will welcome the £50M double signing of Fellaini and Cabaye like they were Scholes and Keane.

I'd love to see Moyes shortlist - surely players like Banega, Marchisio, Montolivo, Ozil, Modric, Erickson, Moutinho, Hamsik etc will feature and we are in with shout get one of them for 20-35 million especially in Italy

The Osman thing was a self mocking joke someone made up on here.

Tell me SKy have just lifted that from here right?

Right?

Well, at least we can cross some names off that list to make Moyes´ work easier. Hamsik just extented his contract a few weeks ago and Moutinho is going to Monaco this summer. Özil is very unrealistic, giving his status at Madrid and the fact, that he is right now in talks with the club about an contract extension with better conditions. Marchisio, Montolivio and Modric may be potential targets under the right circumstances but are all not very likely. Banega would be worth a shout, giving his versatility, but I dunno, if he would be an improvement to Cleverly. With "Erickson" I assume you mean Christian Eriksen, the lad of Ajax Amsterdam? Would not offer United that much IMO. Pretty overrated and not stable enough defensively (yet) to fill out the role of a CM at United.

Said some time ago DM's first signings would be from his former club. Fellaini and Baines .. now they're talkin'.

I don't know why we didn't get these done back in June because we all knew it anyway. Then at least they could have had a full pre-season with us.

Possibly because we wanted to try and sign the likes of Thiago/Fabregas? It's certainly not inevitable we will end up with either Baines or Fellaini, let alone both.

I suspect it was the marquee signing business... the glamorous player from foreign climes... preferably with an "inho" at the end of their name as the first signing ushering in a new era of success. Or similar marketing bollocks. After all, which would look better? A midfielder from Barca; a team which had battered us in two champions league finals via an unplayable midfield, or a 6 foot 20 thug with sharp elbows and 70's throwback hair from a midtable premiership team. No offense Everton fans

Surely we wouldn't let go our top scorer and our top creater go in the same window. Plenty of time to get replacements but we would be massively weakened.

There's a sale on at Anzhi, maybe a bargain or two could be found there.

Unless we're doing other things behind the scenes, this transfer window has been a disaster up until this point. Of course there's time left but it stuns me that Moyes who knew early that he'd be United manager didn't ask the club to pursue targets even before he was appointed. It's rather deflating.

Less than a month left, football season soon starting for most of the leagues, little time for replacementsfor clubs if they sell a key player.... I can see us giving the youngsters a chance and wait till next year.

Yup there's always a next year....
