Struggling to explain his genius to the hoi polloi
All fair points - yet we are still stuck at speculations; we simply do not know what prompted the club to go for Fabregas. I've touched on this topic before; it's not beyond the realm of possibility that we went in blindly for him for the sake of testing waters. But likewise, and many believe this to be the case, we could have been encouraged by something, or someone. Without knowing the true details we've seen people throw themselves to the fore pointing fingers and calling names. What good is that suppose to achieve?
You are right, speculation won´t archive anything, but by making the whole transfer saga so damn public, the United officials pushed the door wide open for them to happen. The media will jump on it and the result will be articles like the one in this thread. When it comes to the supporter, I can understand some of their reactions. United just lost their best manager in their history, someone who stood for stability like no other in the buisness. They yearn for some assurance and proof, that Moyes is big enough for the job and until now he has not delivered that. That may not be fair but in that situation it is not very easy to have blind faith. I admit, that I would be worried by now if I would be a main supporter of United, but thats just me.
Would fans rather see the club take a "low" risk bet on someone who is attainable but perhaps doesn't have the character to lead this team offensively and defensively? Would fans be satisfied if we spend 10-20m on another player who won't reach his true heights despite going five years strong and again, forcing us into the inevitable situation of looking at a player of Fabregas calibre for a second time? Wouldn't that, if anything, be embarrassing?
Absolutely not. United is right now not in the dire need of an absolute world class CM, because you already have a leader in the midfield in Carrick. What is needed right now, is a reliable partner for him and some cover, so he is not forced to play basically every game in the season. The first one that comes to mind would be Luiz Gustavo, who has fallen in the pecking order in Munich´s ridicoulus midfield. He is not world class, but a Brazilian international and has proven, that he can be a major help next to a creative CM and also lead the midfield by himself vs. smaller sides. He has already gotten the clearance to negotiate with other clubs and is right now in talks with Wolfsburg, a German midtable team (what a waste that would be). He would be absolutely realistic and still improve the midfield of United.
I´m not going to deny that Fabregas would be awesome, because him and Carrick would build one hell of a pair and he could also become Carrick´s eventual successor, but it does not seem to happen. He was a risky target to begin with, playing at a club, which is of the same calibre as United and having several years left on contract.
He is also not the only one. The reality is, that the market of world class CM is dry in this summer. All of them are either already playing at elite clubs or have contracts, which make it unrealistic to see them leave their current clubs. This could change in the next years, though. Targets like Gündogan or Vidal could become available in the next years.
There is of course also the possibility to get a good talent and develop him behind/next to Carrick into a world class CM. Most of the current world class CM are either homegrown or developed talents at their respective clubs after all.
