United in this Summer transfer window

I'm not sure we'll sign anyone this summer. The last month and a half has been a clusterfeck regarding transfers. Everton won't want to sell their two best players to the club that took their manager with no notice. Maybe we'll sign some young player but nothing to inspire confidence going into the season.

So we're moving on to Schweinsteiger next yeah? Then that saga should end around the 20th, meaning it'll give us 10/11 days of....Jack Wilshere?

Sorted for the next month.

I agree that Everton won't want to sell them, but taking Moyes from them would have nothing to do with it. I'd say Moyes still has very good relations with Everton and if anything it gives us an advantage.

But seriously - what the feck are we going to do now? I seriously can't see Moyes going from "a couple of signings" to "no signings". Not in his first summer anyway. Even though I don't feel he needed a star signing to settle the nerves of fans with Fergie leaving - it doesn't bode well the fact he said there would be and ending up with none.

We'll sign someone obviously - but it'll surely be a name that hasn't been brought up yet, which does kind of excite me. A Hernandez/Anderson/Nani type signing is always the best really. No saga - just pluck him out from nowhere with no real research on them beforehand.

We will get Fellaini. It's the only option we have left it seems, as long as we don't pull off something totally unexpected. I guess he'd be a decent signing, although I'd still be dissapointed.

I did say at the start of the window that I'd be pleased if we signed Fellaini, so I'm glad I'm not one of those folk who've just recently jumped on the Fellaz's bandwagon due to the upsets of Fabregas.

I honestly do believe he could become our Yaya Toure. He has bags of technique, he can scores goals, he's tough as nails, aerial thread and can be an excellent link between the midfield and the forwards. I admit, he may not be the most flamboyant of signings - but we've always found it difficult to play against him. He tore us a new one in the first game of last season - we just couldn't deal with his physicality, similar to what many teams have a problem with Toure.

Price tag may be a little steep as well - but that's how the market is these days.

We need a CM to be effective in the Champions League. I think Fellaini would have a lot of problems with the European referees and the penchance for "simulation" on the continent. He's not the player that will lead us to a Champions League success, that's for sure.

He also fouls the shit out of everyone, too. So it's not just the diving and soft refereeing.

If the best midfielder the club is able to identify and attain is Fellaini then there need to be some firings in the scouting department. I would hope now we'll move on to Gustavo / Marchisio / Vidal rather than settle for afrohead.

That was one rather shit transfer saga. I really hope we decide to quit with these stupidly low bids and pay what you need to in today's market to get top players. Sadly going by reports were settling and going for a decent player instead. Hope that's not the case and we continue to go for quality, just by not being petty about it.

Vidal isnt moving anywhere. It'd be another pointless exercise.

I'd love us to get Gustavo though.

"there is no budget".

Vidal is a fecking monster in midfield. I saw him on a live stream in Chile's WC qualifier against Bolivia and he truly was the heartbeat of the team. Rarely see that any more, reminded me of Keane in his pomp.

Let's be honest: Vidal. Marchisio, Gustavo, all would be better than Fellaini.

I just don't see why Fellaini is rated highly at all.

The Alcantara transfer is more interesting. If its true that we didn't make a formal approach then I'd like to know what were the real reasons. I don't buy this lack of physical presence argument.

He had a release clause. There was no reason to make a formal approach. Convince the player first and if he says yes, the deal's done and dusted in days. As Bayern proved.

There has been nothing to suggest Moyes and Co. rate him higher than the rest you mentioned to be fair. Vidal's a fecking monster, on another level to the other 3 here but he's basically unattainable unless he specifically wants to come here which is unlikely. Firstly, Juve wont sell. If they did, every top club in the world would be in for him and we'd stand no chance.

Marchisio I think is very gettable. Same with Gustavo. We really should be in for them.

Bayern never activated the release clause though, as I recall.

Yeah, they're playing a friendly to cover the gap from what I gathered.

My point was that a formal bid is pretty pointless for a player who has a release clause as low as Thiago did. The only/first hurdle is to convince the player to come. Cross that and the player's yours.

I think we might have gone for him only to find out later than guardiola got involved and then had no chance. I have no issues with that. Tough luck if that was the case. We could have done anything else. If we didn't even bother to go for him than that's just about the daftest thing our management has done for years.

Why would Marchisio be gettable ? Is there some information about his contract situation that suggests it ?

He stated that he'd be open to a move earlier in the summer iirc. Mentioned both us and Monaco in the same line though

With Pogba performing the way he did last season, he's going to further eat into Marchisio's minutes imo. It'd also be the last chance Juve would have to sell him for a good price and I dont see them turning the chance down when they could do with the money.

I absolutely agree with you re Vidal. Out of him, Pirlo, Pogba, Marchisio, the latter is most likely to miss out (I think Pogba was playing more and more as the season went on last year).

Don't you raise your hat though, to the Juve scout that recommended that a Chilean midfielder from Bayer Leverkusen be purchased? 10 million euro - can you fecking believe that? And we look like we will have to pay 25 million GBP for an average player!

Did Sir Alex actually say that he hadnt heard of Vidal or was that just sensationalism from the media? Top top transfer that, I agree. Dirt cheap and they got one of the best CMs in the world atm.

Dunno. We can never know what players did not pass SAF's assessment. One can only congratulate those clubs, like the ones in the Bundesliga, that consistently identify quality in South America.

I know SAF passed on Zidane though

same here, if that was a Guardiola's factor- so be it. We had the same leverage with SAF.
IRC Moyes said we weren't interested or some thin along this line and that would have been daft.

Either way- he's gone. Good luck and well done Bayern.

Genuine question; Why would Marchisio be behind Pogba in selection?

Watch Juve's Serie A campaign last year. Pogba became much more prominent and it appears (though I am not Antonio Conte) that Marchisio would "suffer" from playing less than Vidal and Pirlo. Conte can't play all four in the same team.

Lest you forget, Pogba is a bloody good player. He just wanted more money, quicker.

This summer has been an absolute disaster. Like it or not, but it has.

We should have made SAF Director of Football and unlike some geordie counterpart, I am sure he can ring up anyone in the world and ask about their player with the exception of that pear-shaped coach in Napoli.

We almost never land our targets, ever. We are almost just underpricing and underpaying on what it takes to get top players.

£40m for Fabregas would have been a bargain.

It would have been a bargain if we knew they'd accept such a bid.

I think the problem is depth, not quality like most.

To a certain extent I agree with you. The most immediate problem is depth. What we lack most urgently, though, is a defensively solid midfielder. Petrucci won't offer much in that respect, from what I've seen of him. Bloody shame Tunnicliffe didn't turn out as good as some said he would - having a DM/CM in the talent range of some of our young attackers...that would've been very handy at the moment.
