United in this Summer transfer window

I just asked my wife about whether she thinks Ronaldo is coming back. She says no, but she concedes she has no contacts with the club.

Classic disinformation. The only person to deny having contacts must be the person who actually does have contacts.
Check out her phone when she's asleep. We need to know.

I know it's early but I'm starting to get worried, a lot of teams have been making moves, there will be no players left, I hope we aren't putting all our eggs in one basket and left with no back ups

We're seemingly putting our eggs in a sh!tload of baskets.

Or to quote one of those ITKs from the other day, we're keeping a lot of "plates spinning" as we're expecting a few of the plates to smash!

It's certainly a little harder to predict how it will go down this summer compared to previous years. Last summer it was the established Gill and SAF pairing, who got it sorted early doors. There is far more uncertainty in general now at OT, with the long standing stability we have enjoyed for so long now no longer present. We have a new manager and coaching staff who are yet to officially start, along with a new CE. You would expect things would already have been discussed, but there are many question marks over who will stay and who will go. Better to take stock first i would presume, see what you have and what you then want and then act accordingly.

Every decision moyes makes will now be scrutinised and judged using the benefit of hindsight in comparison to what SAF would have done. If i were moyes i would not be making any decisions in haste. Sort out who you want to keep and who you want to get rid of - if anybody - and the then sign the right players for the system you have in mind.

SAF signed only one player of note last year, but it made all the difference because it was a player who gave us more belief as a team. Moyes has had a good eye for a player in the past, and now he is fishing in a far bigger pond. Will be interesting to see who he identifies.

The limit is there but this so called 60 million borderline doesn't work like that, especially in the biggest football clubs.

You want a player who cost huge amount of cash ? You go to the board/owners and request funds, specifically for that player. In details, You tell them why and convince them of a success and benefits of this particular signing.

From what Sir Alex stated, one big signing is already there and there are certainly funds for it, no matter the cost of other targets.

I'm shocked the RAWK doesn't have a United Ronaldo boom bust cycle thread ;p

We don't have Phelan to prepare the bids anymore nor do we have Gill to prepare the warchest.

It'll be a long summer.

Harsh on Kagawa. If we sign an equivalently gifted centre midfielder this year everyone will be beside themselves.

Inconsistency here - If van Persie was the only signing of note, then August 17th hardly counts as "early doors". And, as KingEric mentions, it's a little harsh on Kagawa.

This vacation thing is a bit weird isn't it? I mean.. this is a rather crucial period in his career and he goes to the beach for a month? Wasn't he supposed to spend most of his vacays watching U18 championships and such, scouting for players.

Strootman + Thiago + A quality winger...and we're all set.

Yeah, it is very odd. He's the first football manager ever to go on holiday.

He's also the first person ever to not immediately start working in a new job before the contract with his current job ends and he actually starts his new job.

I do love how we are getting on his back for going on holidays, before he even officially starts the job. Give him a break, I'm sure he is still thinking about what to do while on holidays, and the club is acting on his behalf before he actually starts working when the contract ticks over.

Isn't that what scouts are for?

Certainly, just remember reading how he spent most of his vacations eagerly scouting players personally.

Moyes Out! No, not really.. was just a bit curious why he disappeared just as he is about to start one of the biggest jobs in the game. Especially seeing José come in and doing interviews etc (surprise surprise).

That is probably the reason he got the job over Jose though. One seeks out the limelight, while the other lays low for a bit and gets on the with the job hopefully.

I went to a talk by Moyes when he was North End manager, in which he described his working day in detail.
Rest assured he's a workaholic Fergie-style, 12hrs a day plus, no way is he lounging around in the sun doing nothing.

Since not much has been said about transfers from the club since Sir Alex's retirement, nobody seems to know the intentions of the club in this transfer window. Here are the last things that were said on the issue:

Sir Alex: said:
"Tweak is the right word. We maybe look at one or two bodies to come in. You have to remember we have a lot of young players we expect to improve. We have to take that into consideration. We also have to consider the ages of some players and protect that part.

In the main, we know where we are. We are comfortable. We have [fantastic strength in depth]. That is the area where we don't want to confuse ourselves, otherwise you end up with too many players and trying to keep them all happy. It has happened a few times this season. Ferguson is confident the Glazer family will deliver if he needs a marquee signing.

Any time we have asked for money from the owners they have delivered. That will apply itself this year. There is no doubt about that. Your scouting goes on for a full season, sometimes two seasons. You want to see how someone does the next season. That is the process we go through. We have some ideas where we are going. Hopefully we can conclude them".

Bearing in mind that Sir Alex was well aware of his retirement at this stage.

Also this:

Ed Woodward said:
"There's incredible depth. We could put two first teams out with 11 internationals in each.
We have a young squad, each now a year older. We're very comfortable with the make-up of team and squad. I wouldn't expect there to be a major retooling of the squad.
It has been a phenomenal season. We are a long way ahead in the Premier League and, whilst I wouldn't describe the way we got knocked out of the Champions League as luck, things could have gone differently in that game.".

The inference seems to be that we will tweak the squad but that there is scope for a marquee signing. Also, which might be key, is that it seems the club will continue to pursue players that the we have been scouting for the past year or two.

Not new information by any means but highlights our intentions since we have had nothing but silence for what seems like ages now.

We have had a few disappointments in the past few summer windows.

2010 - Ozil (Not sure how genuine the interest was)
2011 - Nasri, Sanchez
2012 - Hazard, Lucas
2013 - ?

Will someone join the list this season?

You forgot the biggest one - Wesley Sneidjer!

And when the feck were we ever properly in for Sanchez?

Don't know man, we were in for him as much as we are in for Thiago right now. Different outlets kept on linking him to us for years. I'm sure if Thiago ends up signing for, let's say, City, I'd feel a little disappointed because I feel he can improve us, the same as I felt with Sanchez.

feck I keep forgetting that the window hasn't officially even opened yet  Feels like its been a transfer window for the past 2 months.

It's going to be one long Summer.
