United in this Summer transfer window

Could the club actually legally hold back news of big signings for so long, considering we're on the stock-market?
If the deal(s) is completed then they can announce it surely?

That is what I am asking, whether they perhaps have to announce it since we're being traded. If we bought Ronaldo I am sure our stock price would go up, which you would assume they would be obligated to tell investors.

Or maybe not, that's what I want to know.

There wouldn't be a need to hide a transfer anyway unless it hasn't been completed, my expectation was that they'd announce a big one not too long after the news of Fergie retiring. The lack of news however suggests to me that we've yet to make much offers.

If the contract has been signed then they are bound to disclose it unless they inserted a confidentiality clause within it which legally would supercede their disclosure obligation as a publicly traded company.

I think something big will happen transfer wise within the league this summer. I remember when the news broke of Sir Alex retiring, Martin Tyler and a BBC Journalist both putting on twitter that if the second part of what they have heard comes true (the retirement being the first), then English football will implode or something along those lines. Now this could be something ridiculous like Rooney and Ronaldo to Chelsea, or Ronaldo and Cavani to City, but hopefully it will be something to do with us. I think Sir Alex said that we had been working on a couple of deals for a few months now, but im not sure how the retirement may have effected these?

I remember that, but I assumed it was Mourinho coming back or was that a given already at the time?

I'm a strange mix of excited and subdued fears for this transfer window. We just can't sit idly by, and I don't imagine Moyes intends to. I would expect at least one very big signing.

Exactly how I feel. Although I just can't see anyone who'd be classed as a big signing being available, or in the case of someone becoming available - we won't be outbid by a Chelsea/City/PSG/Madrid/Monaco.

SAF did mention making a major transfer this summer, just before the retirement.

Would that not mean that every business there is could just sign confidentiality clauses in everything they did and then not have to disclose anything at all to anybody, thus rendering the term 'obligation' somewhat meaningless?

Well a NDA requires the consent of the other party if it is to be bound so, in this wildly optimistic example, RM would need to sign it. That would mean them waiting until July 1st at the earliest to receive their money (assuming it is paid in one lump sum) and of course they would want to be tapping up Bale in the meantime which would mean they would have to answer his questions about "how will ronaldo and I play together?" Telling him he is already sold would be in breach of their NDA so no way would the selling club agree to something so onerous/restrictive.

The continuing disclosure obligation is just to ensure that investors are on a level playing field; everyone has access to all material information about the company which is price sensitive, at the same time. There is no reason for any plc to keep material news quiet, whether it be bad or good. If you release the news, which will ALWAYS come out in the end, then you can spin it in the right way "Our profits will be 10% below forecasts, BUT we have reinvested in our production methods so should see an increase in profitability in the next quarter etc." Not to mention they could get fined, suspended or even removed from the exchange. If you get a reputation as a firm that has less than exemplary governance practices or consistently uses NDAs when there is no need, then stand back and watch the flight of investors as your price plummets.

Not to mention the huge legal fees...

In summary; 0% chance Utd have signed a player so far (or at least not one that we have just paid 1/5 of our total revenue on). Not to say that talks are not at an advanced stage however... :)

Sounds interesting, but that sort of thing never comes off.

Imagine Rooney and Ronaldo showing up at Chelsea!
We'd have a tricky couple of years to say the least! Would be horrendous.

I have always had a suspicion that Fergie refused to sign an expensive central mid in the past few seasons so that his successor can get to choose one for himself.

In another news, Usain Bolt is still keeping his hopes up of playing for Manchester United. He still wants the move.

wouldn't surprise me if Zaha and Verla were the only signings we make this summer....
Thats the spirit.

What makes you think this? When has a new manager ever come into a club and not made at least a couple of signings designed to fit into the 1st team?

I just wish SOMETHING would happen.........after SAF going, then Moyes being announced and Rooney playing up again it looked like an exciting summer ahead.........now there is nothing happening and IM SO BORED!

They won't be.

He's not taking over until July 1st, officially, he can't actually announce signings himself now even if he makes them. Chill.

It's still 20 days before the transfer window officially opens!

I can see why people are a little anxious because under SAF we were known for wrapping up the majority of transfers before the window even opened, but I'm not sure how people were expecting the same this year given we have a new manager coming, in July.

Fabregas and Ronaldo aren't ever happening.

Hopefully Thiago and Bale but more likely Fellaini and an unheard of winger.

I hope we pull off some top notch central mid signings, but, yeah, that's what I was thinking was likely, too..

More likely an unheard of CB, seeing as we've been linked with quite a few.

I do think that we'll make a very big signing though, as SAF's hinted at it and Moyes will want to make a good impression in the transfer window.

Interesting you think Bale is a "Hopefully", whereas Fabregas isn't ever happening?!

I'd say it'd be the other way round
