United are "Genuinely interested" in signing Neymar

Obviously Neymar produces amazing individual moments of quality but he's amazing when working with Iniesta, Messi, Suarez etc. I couldn't really see him lighting up the Premier League alongside Rooney, current Memphis and Mata.

My point is that we'd need to sign more than one player like Neymar, preferably a striker. Martial would probably be up to it in about 2-4 years or so.

That point is negated in any case. He's carried Brazil's national side on his back with a lot of dross that shouldn't be in the team for about 4 years or so.

You can't ignore the fact that Van Gaal is our manager and he simply wouldn't allow him to play like he did at the World Cup here, though.

I have read that Barca's wages are 73% of their revenue which is quite high. I think they will do everything they can to retain Neymar but then they will miss out/compromise elsewhere on pitch for some other player by not being able to pay big wages when some other club comes in with higher wage offer for that player. The choice is theirs really, make Neymar one of the biggest earners in football, at level with Messi maybe and rely on his genius and some shrewd business elsewhere to continue success few years from now or cash in on Neymar and then rebuild through youngsters/less costly but good potential players till Messi and Suarez etc are around meaning they will still have players to be in and around the very best clubs while bringing down the wage bill.

This team needs a Neymar level talent. No question.

It also needs 2-3 other world class additions duty to the fact that we only have one absolute top bracket player and he is the GK.

Neymar has quicker feet, better balance and agility than the whole squad put together (minus Martial)
So many flipping flat-footed trudgers in this team - who probably couldn't even move their legs quickly enough to play a passing move like Wolfsburg's.

What's his release clause, €190m? For that we could buy around three brilliant players instead of just one who happens to play for Barcelona. There are the likes of Reus, Griezmann; there are the 'Martials' of the footballing world. We should go for those instead. Spending that much on one single player is a crazy risk. We would basically go all in, risking everything on him.
No idea what his release clause is and I don't think we'd necessarily have to activate it to get him. That said, yeah, the sum would definitely be 100mil+ but I don't think it's as easy as saying we could get 3 top players for that. Reus doest have a release clause anymore. Greizmann does but I'd be surprised if it's at the lower side. Martial is a kid with a lot of potential, shouldn't be mentioned alongside these names.

He'd be perfect for that left wing-back spot. He can be rotated with Ashley Young too.

I'd rather gamble on some potentially world class young players who we can mold and who want to play for us. Other than financial reasons, there is zero reason why Neymar would move to us.

I dare say he is rich enough to live a life of luxury for the rest of his life if he retired now. Why would you leave a team where to play alongside Suarez and Messi for a few extra million?

It would be like leaving (to borrow previous posters comments) Rachel Riley for Lisa Riley because she makes a slightly better omelette.

That's nonsense. He's miles better than any player in the Prem. He's absolutely as good as Henry or Ronaldo was when they dominated the league.

Ever seen him play for Brazil with fecking Fred as his 9, pass-hating Hulk on the right and a midfield trio of Oscar-Paulinho-Gustavo, which is a decent but not brilliant playmaker who is loved by managers for his defensive work, a runner who can't really pass and a DM who goes months without completing a through ball? I mentioned Martial precisely because he's not a Reus or Griezmann. We can and should go for these established players who can be got for more reasonable fees than Neymar; we should also go for the highly rated kids (not the Obertans and Bebes).

Getting a key player of Barcelona and Brazil... too much hassle, too much money, too big a gamble.

I can see it now - a whole summer where by we are supposedly getting neymar - the deals almost done and day by day it seems more certain...
Only for pep to join city and barca decide to sell messi to him instead and keep neymar leaving us to scramble around before landing vardy for £60 million on transfer deadline day.

Just paper talk lads. We kept our funds for Neymar. This one is real.

Depay, half of Europe chased him.

This is like a RAWK post.

Half the world chased Depay in the same way Arsenal chased Schneiderlin - nothing solid, just click bait.

Nobody has any concrete information that other clubs wanted Depay except for Depay himself saying it...

Neymar will shine with us playing for 4th position and Europa League. Going to Saint Etienne and Karabag

This genuinely reminds me of the Kaka to City rumours of 2008. Laughable to imagine Neymar would leave Barca for Europa League football.

Let's just say, interest from Man Utd moved me...

Into a bigger House!

or keep 23 year old neymar
and sell 28 year old messi to city for something astronomical like £250 million

But...but...we are improving. We got all the way to theLeague Cup 4th round this year and got knocked out by a Championship side. Massive progress on a third round exit to a League One side. See? Facts.

We are on the up and improving!

Progress!

I think I will wait for a better source before I start believing this.

The fact that his own father confirmed talks with United more than suggest there's real interest on United's side and real intrigue from Neymar's camp

I do agree with your point in general, these transfers would always have a risk. I don't see the risk with Neymar in particular though. He's far too good to fail anywhere. Think for his price, you'd get 2 greizmanns. That'd be the better way to go forward if they were certain to succeed which I just can't say with any confidence.

Or he just used the talks with United to get a better contract at Barcelona. You do know he's on the verge of renewing, right?

Isnt his dad his agent as well - or somehow involved in that shady transfer?

Im sure they are just trying to extract the best possible deal from Barca and using us as a poly - wont be the first and wont be the last and I dont mind as one day perhaps we will get a pleasant surprise and one of the stories about us and a top player will actually be true

In reply to the thread title: He better be "genuinely interested" in playing for us too. Don't want another half arsed expensive mercenary.

Anyone who actually believes this is, or ever was a goer wants to have their head seriously read.

Absolute load of tripe.

Neymar doesn't need us to get a better contract. He can name whatever price he wants.
According to the Soanish press it's Neymars camp that are continuing to postpone contract talks so I don't think they need that much leverage.

they are probably waiting for messi to renew so they can say - right we want the same
similarly messi's advisers are probably waiting for neymar to renew so they can say - right we want twice what he has got

Or both are having major tax issues and are waiting to see if the price is worth paying to stay in Spain.
I don't think Messi is negotiating a raise in his new contract anyway, It has more to do with image rights etc after his tax trouble but I could be wrong

Forget the fee. 80m for Ronaldo turned out to be the bargain of a lifetime. If the deal could be done, the price does not matter, most if not all of the money will be made back.

Yeah, agreed. It's not coming out of my account so why would I care about the cost. The club don't make anything cheaper or easier for the fans so I couldn't care less how much they spend as long as they don't go bust! We've spunked good money on enough failures so a high fee for a player who will surely win the Ballon D'or in the coming years wouldn't be a hardship. Cost is irrelevant if they bring success. That said while LVG is our manager I can't see any mercurially talented players wanting to sign for us as they'll just be stifled as much as our other 'flair' players have been.

I was very much against the whole 'Neymar is brilliant' brigade a while back, but his performances in the last year or so have shown he's the natural heir to Ronaldo and Messi's reign as the World's best. I can't see him personally wanting to leave Barca though unless it was for the money, which if that was his sole reason for coming to the club would be a worry anyway. The only reason I could see him wanting to leave Barca is if he wants to be the main man at a club. At the minute he's underling to Messi and probably will be for at least another couple of seasons.

Sounds crazy but he is worth 100 mil and we should go after him at all cost.

I had a dream this happened. Probably because I signed him on FM recently.
