Second season running they've got no interest in the league and so can go all out in Europe. Milan used to make a real habit of this.
It helps that Zenit have been pants defensively (as Dortmund haven't really been that special going forward apart from a few glimpses), but Dortmund have pressed well. Swamping the opposition so they have no option but to run it out of play or lose possession.

This is the result of having an opponent you can´t realistically beat in a league scenario, because said opponent can destroy half the league with just their B team. You concentrate on the competitions you may be able to win. This worked out last season because even while half arsing a handful of games they still were comfortably a top 3 team. This season the general competiton got stronger and the injuries make them suffer.
