UCL Round of 16 - First Legs - Feb 18 - 26

Drogba is surely not the best African footballer ever? That sounds nuts.

At his best he was brutal and I thought he was great in big games, but he wasn't exactly a hugely consistent player.

Eto'o was better on most counts for me. Probably even better at big games and a more consistently high level of performance.

However, I'd expect the best ever to be better than both.
If we are speaking strictly of players who got senior caps for an african nation and not the ones who were born there but moved away, that's as good as it gets.

Eto'o for me as well.

Does that make Michael Owen the best English player? of course not.
That's a fair point and he obviously isn't but I haven't seen the sort of criticism about Weah winning it as Owen got. IIRC Eto'o was in the top 3 a few years back anyway. It's definitely between the three of them if we're excluding Africans who played for France/Portugal etc.

Just looking back, it seems ludicrous that Owen won the Ballon d'Or but was 8th for world player of the year and not even the highest English player. Much better now the awards are unified.
