UCL Round of 16 - First Legs - Feb 18 - 26

A referee... Graham Poll?.. said that, when calculating whether its a goal scoring oppertunity, you take the players speed into account. For example, Ronaldo taken out at the half way line from a through ball might be, but Emile Heskey might not (not the example he gave).

In the situation you described yeah it could make sense to look at it like that but Robben's was so close to the keeper and goal that any player should be considered in a clear goalscoring situation.

Never a good idea.

Agreed. That would be a goal scoring chance for any player (except Valencia, who would control it and then cross it)

Redknapp talking over two superior players than him who are both better analysts... and then when he does speak, it's inane drivel.

Was looking forward to Pep's post-match interview because he's usually insightful and an interesting person to listen to. Other than the refreshing comment saying Bayern shouldn't have had a second penalty, he seemed completely disorientated, been on the beers.

That's 7 away wins in a row now for Bayern in the CL (Arsenal, Juve, Barca, City, Plsen, CSKA, Arsenal). Has any team ever had a comparable run?

His English isn't as good as I thought.

Thought it was pretty clear that he was struggling with his English in that interview because of how ingrained his German has become. He kept searching for German words where, in the past, he's never done that before.

Think he's just out of practice with English.

We played so well before the sending off, first 20mins we were all over them. Good play by Ozil to win the penalty but a real bad penalty by him. They always look worse when you take them that way but Alaba's was even worse imo, at least he hit the target. After the sending off it completely changed the game but we defended well. Was always going to be a tough ask but that Kroos goal was fecking quality, Wilshere got sucked towards the ball and let him have a free shot but feck me that was a short and a half. Second goal Kos got caught upfield, at 1-0 we might of been in the tie but will struggle now. The Gibbs injury really messed us up as well, he had been dealing a lot better than Monreal did against their attack there. Boatang should of been sent off as well, firstly surely he denied Ozil a goal scoring chance but even worse he made another cynical tackle that he didn't get booked for.

I would think it is the record. Apparently the current record for successive Champions League wins home and away is 11, set by Barcelona in 2002/03 (inc. qualifiers - without qualifiers it's 10, set by Bayern this season), but I think that only involved 5 away wins, before they ended the sequence with a draw away at Inter.

Therefore 7 probably is the consecutive away wins record.

Unlike City, I reckon the Arse are still in with a chance in this one. If they can keep 11 guys on the field that is..
You mean they could beat Bayern by 2 or 3 goals in Munich?

Bitterly, bitterly disappointed.

The person I feel the most disappointed for? Wenger.

He set up his team perfectly and we were great from the off.

Then what happens?

Ozil misses a penalty
Gibbs goes off (so that is our planned substitutions ruined already)
Chesney sent off as well (so we end up taking off our 2nd best attacker)

Everything that could have gone wrong, did go wrong.

In fairness, it could have been 4-0 to Bayern after that. Two goals, missed penalty and Kroos hit the post. I've never seen us dominated like that at home in the second half, ever. I don't think we made a touch in Bayern's penalty box after half time.

I wish I could say that I'm proud of the team and that I take heart in this defeat but darn it we lost and to me the result is all that matters. I am proud of the team but at the end of the day it doesn't mean much. We're exhausted from all of that effort, Ozil looks to be terribly out of form and we are all but out of Europe. Did I mention that our 1st choice left back is out injured and we don't know how long for? Or that our first choice striker has been dropped to the bench in favour of a young kid?

I've tried looking for the positives, we were great in the first half, everyone put in a shift in the second half but we still conceded twice. The goals are avoidable as well, no one was marking Kroos (he had 3 of those type of efforts, one save, one goal and one hit the post, you would think that we would have learned) and we just let Muller get a free run into the box to score.

We also kept Ozil on for the entire 90 when it was clear he wasn't doing enough,
.

What is most disappointing is that we weren't given a masterclass or schooled like last year. It just feels like every single blessed thing went against us. Only way this result would be even more annoying is if it happened in a final.

We've been screwed over so many times in this competition, absolutely no luck, Paris, Liverpool (dive), Barcelona (Van Persie's "red card") and now tonight.

Congratulations Bayern.

We have to win a trophy this year. I know its an attention grabbing headline but its still mildly annoying. I didn't see anything like this written about City, it was all about brave, plucky City gave it their best but got screwed over by the referee.

Everyone thought City would beat Barcelona handsomely, they lose, get proven wrong and they still get praised.

Everyone predicts us to get thumped by Bayern, we lose, which is the result they expected but yet we still get roundly criticized for it.

Irony.

To be fair, The Sun werent kind to city, Steve Howard tore them a new one.

That Wilshere freekick near the end was so incredibly dumb it managed to infuriate me.

Imagine running around like maniacs for 50 minutes just to keep yourselves in the tie, then you finally get a chance to load up the opposition box...and Jack Wilshere somehow times the taking of the freekick perfectly to allow you enough time to be hopelessly out of position, without quite having enough time to actually get in the opposition box...then Bayern win the ball from the freekick and immediately run up the pitch and score.

I mean, what an unbelievable fecking cretin. He'd had an ok game up until that point as well

Not much conselation, but there was a noticable difference in class between your manager/captain's comments after the game compared to City, and I thought you gave it a better go than they did as well (pre red card at least).

Also, there hasn't been that much sympathy or praise for City. Mostly they've just made themselves look like delusional, sour twats. I think they actually believed their own hype and thought they'd play Barcelona off the park...It literally took them over 10 minutes to get a touch of the ball outside of their own half, and even then, that's what it was, a touch. Kompany's interview was so far detached from reality it was almost more entertaining than the game.

Kroos was absolutely fantastic from start to finish.

You can clearly get to this Bayern side though. If we'd got that penalty and then made them come onto us, it could have been a different game.

I don't blame the referee for the decision but it really demonstrates the problem we have in the game with how some rules are so firmly applied and others aren't. Imagine if the yellow card offence rule was applied properly. Boateng would have been off with Szczesny in the first half. Gerrard would have been off on Sunday, etc.

That's my gripe. If you want to be harsh, do it for everything.

Bayern are definitely there for the taking. Hopefully they is still the case come the Quarter finals.

I disagree though. Most of the rules in football are extremely speculative when seen written down. Referees use comen sense, precedents, and pre season discussions on how to interpret incidents.

Everyone knows that that was a red card, whereas Boatangs was a "last warning" given that he had already just been booked.

Maybe the rules need to change, but interpretation of unwritten rules is fine

I hate to defend him (I hate him) but, I don't think he spat on him....Could have been sweat just dripping off his chin? Doesn't look like it came out of his mouth to me....Need a better angle
Bizarre. Rossi as the voice of reason?? Have you been drinking?

You may be right.

Its possible it could have been sweat although you'd think it looks too big. Still its hard to tell from that angle, my initial reaction was spit though.

Looked at that gif a few times now, and to me it appears that even if Robben does spit, he's aiming beyond Sagna & onto the pitch.

He spits behind him, it was after some foul on Sagna by somebody else than Robben iirc.

Arsenal fans were booing because they couldn't get over the fact that the penalty wasn't due to his diving or some other crap, it was due to Szczesny being an idiot.

Have to say both City and Arsenal did relatively well despite being down to 10 men. They were well organized and didn't seem to wilt under pressure.

Contrast that to how we conceded two goals in 10mins against Real in the CL last year and it's a bit depressing.

ssshhhh...it's the Arsenal and City who got schooled. Man Utd got screwed by the ref.
