UCL Round of 16 - First Legs - Feb 18 - 26

Given the circumstances, Arsenal did reasonably well tonight. Their goalkeeper will always be prone to that kind of recklessness, Ozil was terrible and Sanogo was understandably naive. They did very well to counter that and keep themselves in the tie - up until that Muller goal, at least.

There will be at least one upset in the return legs of the games played today and yesterday. Because of statistics
there is a stat in the CL that pretty much suggests that if you lose at home in the 1st leg 99% of the time you go out.

A couple of years ago when I heard the stat it was like only 2 times ever.

Perhaps someone knows it exactly?

@Damien ?

Bayern have the best balance between long ball, tiki taka, wide play and counter attack in any club in the world.

Absolutely. They, if anything, really do embody what should be identified as "the United way." That is kind of football we used to play, and that is exactly what we must attempt to resemble. Pace on the wings, directness, attacking freedom and some good passing football.

They will suffer the same inevitable fate as City after conceding that late goal. Credit to them though, like you said, they've done well considering the circumstances and had Ozil scored that penalty it would have put a completely different complexion on the game.

From Arsenal's perspective I'd be far more frustrated with Wenger than the players. How Ozil remained on the pitch was a mystery, culpable for plenty of Bayern's chances down their right-hand side.

"Inter's win over Bayern Munich last night made them just the second team in Champions League history to win a two-legged tie after losing the first leg at home (after Ajax in 1996)," notes Sam Allen. "But was this a more common occurrence back when the tournament was still just the European Cup, before its rebranding in 1992? My suspicion is that the feat will look less impressive when put in this greater context."

Not at all, Sam – if anything it looks even more impressive. In 37 years of European Cup football prior to the Champions League rebranding, only three teams managed to overturn a deficit sustained in the home leg. In other words, Internazionale are only the fifth team in 56 years to progress after losing the first leg at home in Europe's top club competition.
Edit: Also relevent:
Next up were Ajax – who remain the only team ever to lose by more than one goal at home and still progress. In February 1969 they were beaten 3-1 by Benfica in Holland, but two goals from Johann Cruyff helped them to win the return by the same margin. That meant the quarter-final tie would be settled with a play-off game at a neutral venue, the Stade des Colombes in Paris. An incredible 40,000 Ajax fans travelled to France, where they saw their team run out 3-0 winners after extra-time.

There was talk on the radio about Arsenal spending money on a statue for somewhere around the emirates. Someone phoned in to say there was no need because they have spent £50M on one last summer.

I was sure I saw it right. Not only he's a fecking flop but as well he hates Arsene. Stay classy Wojtek.

Bayern have Kroos, Thiago, Martinez, the Schwein. We have Cleverley, Fellaini, Fletcher, Carrick.
They have Ribery, Robben, Gotze. We have Young, Valencia, Kagawa.
They have Lahm, Alaba. We have ??

Jesus. Baby Jesus

Cheers

Yep its a hell of a stat.

Out of the 4 games, Milan probably can do it but I doubt it.
I'm watching the last 30 minutes of the Milan game and they look the better side, they might to it.

It's an amazing stat because a 1-0 home defeat can be overcome by 2-1. I can't believe its so hard.

We have Rooney, Van Persie, Mata, Januzaj, Rafael, Carrick, Jones, De Gea - we are not as bad as we have performed this season.

 I think it was a red card, but Redknapp's reasoning for it it absolutely incredible.

"Is it a definite goal-scoring chance, Jamie?"

"Yes, of course it is, Robben controlled a similar ball against Dortmund last season. He's shown it before"

Yes, Jamie, what he did last season is completely relevant to this foul. He's a right prick.

And every time Ballack tries to speak Redknapp cuts him off with some inane shouted bollocks

So for another player (say Andy Carroll) it wouldn't have been a goalscoring chance ? These guys get paid to display their footballing ignorance ...

I dont know what Carragher is spitting. If the rules say obstructing a clear goalscoring chance leads to red then thats what has to happen regardless of whether it ruins the match for him or not. Cant just go around changing rules to please Carragher that twat

Should have just said they had Pep who's already won titles and European cups, we have... ;)

A referee... Graham Poll?.. said that, when calculating whether its a goal scoring oppertunity, you take the players speed into account. For example, Ronaldo taken out at the half way line from a through ball might be, but Emile Heskey might not (not the example he gave).
