U21 Euro Championships 2015

I don't get the hype surrounding this Will Hughes kid, has looked average at best whenever I've seen him.

Wilson ahead of Kane and Ings, are you mad? Thorpe should be in the squad, as should Sam Johnstone really. You could argue Ben Pearson should be but apart from that there's not a lot else that United could offer.

I never argued that he should be ahead of Kane and Ings, but Wilson serves well not only as a centre-forward but with United as a wide player too. Aside from that, I've already mentioned that some random Wolves' player replaced Berahino instead of James.

random Wolves' player
 I didn't know if was Benik Afobe, who's been class.

No way Wilson should be ahead of a guy who's scored loads in League 1 and Championship because he's at United and Afobe is "some wolves' kid"

Poor performance. I've seen us play some good stuff prior to the tournament, so hopefully we can replicate it against Sweden and Italy.

Ah well, England created far the better chances, beaten by a freak goal.

England must have some of the whiniest, most boring fans of any national team, at all levels.

It would have been good to the likes of Stones, Shaw, Barkley and Berahino in this side if it were not for injury and selection policy. This team isn't the best representation of what we have, particularly at the back.

Yeah, it is not accident that he isn't getting linked with big clubs anymore. The midfield is a real weak spot for England. I feel that we need to play Ings and Kane, we need the better players on the pitch IMO. We have to win the next two now.

i think they played good football offensively but they were terrible defensively, specially the two centerbacks.....

Played well. Just the cutting edge wasn't there but good build up and posed more threat than Portugal.

My god, how does Ian Wright remember to breath? 4 words into a sentence, he appears to have another thought and goes off on another tangent. He could speak for 5 minutes and not actually finish a coherent sentence. His agent is a fecking hero.

Wilson wouldn't get a game ahead of Kane, Ings or Berahino.

Bamford also should have been there but he seems injured as well.

Afobe scored 32 goals this season. May have been in League 1 and the Championship, but still more deserving than Wilson

While i agree that Wilson should not have been there, don't agree with this logic fully.

It's like saying you'd rather pick Troy Deeney for England than Welbeck or even Sturridge if given a choice.

I think Chambers and even possibly Michael Keane should be starting as CB ahead of Moore and Gibson as well.

I thought that was OK over all. The CB's are terrible, but we created some good chances and only conceded a sloppy goal.

Portugal are the best team here. Carvalho is cheating really, he's too big for this level. Bernardo Silva was very impressive.

Will England ever beat Portugal again in a tournament at any level?

Good going forward in parts but thought the midfield didn't make their mark on the game enough. I feel if they can improve in the next two games we can do alright.

Some of you have a word with yourself. It's been a disappointing performance but "dreadful" and "championship side" comments are ridiculous. We've had some cracking chances and with a bit more luck one would have went in. Portugal have played very well.

Butland - Championship player
Gibson - I don't even know who he is
Moore - Was at Brentford last year I think?
Chalobah - Championship player. He's the only 'dm' we have I guess.
Carroll sat on the bench at Swansea, prior to that was at QPR
Redmond is at Norwich?
Lingard was at a championship side too, I forget now

Then you have Ward Prowse, Kane, Jenkinson and Ings who have proven some premier league quality. Jenkinson is crap anyway.

The defence especially looks weak.

portugal looked like the best side at the U20 WC but lost out to Brazil in the QFs. I thought they were better than Brazil. Portugal keep producing good quality players at age group level, its no shame to lose to them at present.

I think England need to Push Chalobah back to CB and partner him with Chambers. Which would mean they could play a higher line than what they are playing to avoid getting exposed.

Put Loftus CHeek or Forster Caskey, Tom carrol etc.. in midfield.

Also, what was lacking today was a link between the midfield and attack someone to make things happen. Pritchard should start now but still lack of game changing ability and dynamism remains in the team when you consider those who have played in the qualifying and not available in this. Barkley, Ox, Sterling, Zaha, Morrison and Jonjo Shelvey. (Southgate could have picked Shelvey and Zaha i guess, but stuck to his guns.)

The midfield did okay until they conceded, after the goal everything went to s**t + the substitution didnt really help. Carroll should have been taken off not Prowse but even then, if you have the midfield of Carroll and Hughes you put Hughes as the deeper one, after Carroll went off Hughes won more balls then Carroll whole game in that deeper position.

This isn't the senior side. Not everybody will be starting for a premier league team. When people say championship quality, they are using it as an insult.

Are the other teams there filled with players playing at the highest level every week?

Dier not being in the squad is a bit of a disgrace from Southgate, unless there's something I'm missing.

Never heard of most of the Portugal team. They were saying how some of them were playing for B teams. We'd be on the brink of something special if all these guys were regulars in good PL teams.

Its much easier though to call the team bullshit, say they're championship quality, say its the same old after losing one game 1-0 and mocking players on the team because they've been hyped up by the media after daring to have one great season.

Nothing like some good support!

Actually the England side has the fewest amount of senior appearances of any of the teams in the competition. The Germany side that we beat recently had something insane like 500 more senior appearance than our lads!

Sorry, by senior appearances, do you mean for the actual national squad or simply for a professional football team?

Senior appearances or top flight?

Guess, Southgate could have picked Shelvey and Zaha and they have like 400 appearances in between them only.

Ah ok. Then surely it doesn't really matter whether those senior appearances happen to be for a team in the premier league or for a team in the championship then?

I think it matters that we have too many low quality foreigners in English football. I mean that Carlos Sanchez at Aston Villa, are you telling me that they don't have a young English lad who can play as badly as him?

Such is the wealth in the Premier League that I think we need a home grown quota to develop the younger English players.

Not just the PL, but also the Championship. Not seen the stats but pretty sure Championship clubs are paying much bigger wages and transfer fees than other countries second divisions.

Home grown quota doesn't work though as then EU players come in or rest of britain players even failing EU. Or if they aren't there then experienced English players get preference. You're Vardy's and Drinkwaters were blocking Nick Powell and Chalobah on loan at Leicester last season..and Shackell ahead of Michael Keane at Burnley etc.. What about that then ?

Ultimately PL on average is higher standard and demands are increasing for which people want experienced players. And those who have made their way into the starting 11s regularly/semi regularly either get called up to the senior squad or don't end up going to the U21 Euros(Barkley, Shaw, Jones, Sterling, Chamberlain etc..). Though this time it's somewhat better but 2 of them in Beraihno and Stones ended up injured and as i said above some like Zaha and Shelvey weren't picked for other reasons by Southgate so cannot see this as black and white.

I love watching Carlos Sanchez play at Villa. So effortlessly terrible.
