In the first season he supposedly managed an injury with pain killing injections. He then had meniscus surgery, United wanted him to use a surgeon in London and he preferred to use one in the Netherlands. Whilst the club agreed to him having it done in the Netherlands, he travelled and had the operation without getting the go ahead. It was then found he had fragments left after the op, so when he should have begun his rehab for the injury he had to have another op.
Where’s this information from? The entire thing has been shrouded in such mist. Never realised we had any sources setting out so definitely what happened.

I read it the other day via MEN, but I'm sure the op has been mentioned in the Athletic as well.

Been unlucky so far at United.

Not looked a world beater but was tidy enough. To suffer these issues has really hit his chances of a long term career here.

Expected. Is the squad list out?

Yes.

An official statement of what injury he's actually recovering from and why it's taking such an extraordinary amount of time. Don't think the club has answered that.

They are not obliged to give injury updates directly. Injury news are quite often leaked to the press. At every club.

There is this update from the club?

Malacia last played a competitive fixture for the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League on June 14 but went under the knife a month later shortly after pre-season began. The defender sustained a knee injury at the end of the 2022/23 campaign and surgery was eventually required, despite United initially looking to manage it with pain injections.

After that initial operation, Malacia required another round of surgery and his prolonged absence has been a source of frustration for Erik ten Hag, but he's now closing in on a return to full fitness and is currently undergoing an individual programme to complete his rehabilitation.

United released fresh footage of Malacia training individually under the guidance of a member of medical staff and he is wearing a device around his left knee. For the first time since his injury, Malacia was seen with the ball at his feet during the session, which suggests he could be available for selection in August.

He started having pain in his knee in the second half of his first season with us. The injury was managed with painkillers so that he could continue to play to the end of that season.

On arrival for preseason 2023, the knee was still an issues, so he had to have surgery. Malacia opted to go to a surgeon he knew in the Netherlands rather than one recommended by the club.

At this point he was expected to be back some time around October (2023), but scans upon his return to training showed cartilage fragments had been left behind after the op. So he went back to the Netherlands again for corrective surgery. At this point he was expected to return January/February.

From here, he did his rehab work with specialists in the Netherlands and Barcelona rather than at the club. The next time he was pictured in training at Carrington I think was the first week of preseason (i.e like 2 weeks ago).

But he's been out for an entire year now, with a good chunk of that time spent on crutches. So it would be little wonder if he were extremely far behind on fitness. As far as we know right now, that's all there is to it.

The club can't just release medical info without the player's permission. Maybe he doesn't want all the details published which is fair enough.

Not sure why all the fuss about updates?

He has been shown to be back training but away from the main group most likely due to lower intensity after a far longer than expected recovery off the back of a botched op which required redoing. He is not on the tour as travel isn't going to help him at this stage of recovery and an expected come back date hasn't been announced as given the nature of the injury and the amount of time out the club would be stupid to do so.

And there are some here who keeps posting how we don't need a LB. Shaw will get injured again, Malacia can't je trusted, Amass is still a child (he'll get his minutes don't worry). We must buy a FB.

Or had been signed with doubts over his fitness (or judgement in surgeons...).
In his first season, he didn't miss any games through injury and was a solid backup to Shaw. For 13m, it seemed very sensible business. I'm intrigued to see how he'll recover from such a lengthy absence but I certainly wouldn't put him in the 'disaster' category with Antony due to his low transfer fee and solid first season.

Give him sometime to recover for god sake before calling him a bad signing..Injury isn't his fault, and he did reasonably well as a backup.

Hope he can recover at least to an extent where he can continue to play something he love for a prolonged time even if not with us.

Wait no Shaw he is coming back energised. You wait and see on the USA tour, no wait..

Shaw should be on that plane
Of course he should, not like he's played much so he needs games. He declared himself fit for England wonder why he all of a sudden isn't fit for Utd training camp.

1. He's been training all summer.
2. The club are contractually obligated to give him and any other player 3 weeks holiday at minimum.

He has not said he isn't fit, the club are being reasonable and also following their contractual obligations.

It's over for him ain't it? :(

Such a shame how it’s panned out for him. I recall everyone being so happy with his infectious attitude and work rate on the pitch back when he was part of the early turnaround under ETH. Now it’s so long since he last played, you have wonder if it’s even possible for him to make it for us.

Yeah exactly. A low-cost back-up that came with low expectations, provided reliable cover for a season, and then became unavailable for reasons no-one could foresee, can hardly be called a disaster.

Anyway, hope he gets back on track. Somehow this thread is a lot more optimistic than the transfer overview thread, and I hope that's justified.

Last I seen was he was on the grass doing an individual training program so obviously making progress.

Malacia missed about 10 games in 4 seasons at Feyenoord. Just bad luck this.

He really can't catch a break. Neither does Rashford to have his name in headlines about stuff he isn't at fault for at all.
