We've never worked on 'budget', Fergie used to say he was never set one after the takeover, it was just whoever he wanted to bring in and how much he thought they were worth.

100 mil could be the net spend, depending on what we get back for some of our trash we could add may be 5 pounds on top of it.

It looks as if the money is there now and the transfer policy has changed over the last couple of years but I can't help think that there was a spell when money was really tight. We sold Ronaldo and lost Tevez and basically spent the next 2 summers replacing with them a few punts for small fees. Our transfer record went up by about £500k between 2002 and January, apart from the Italian clubs who have collapsed financially I doubt that was the case at any of Europe's other top clubs.

It went up by £500k in terms of on a single player but overall investment was up hugely. Our average net spend per season excluding the year we sold Ronaldo is has been higher than most top clubs over last few years aside from the sugar daddy teams.

Thing is, De Telegraaf have been pretty spot with LVG related news so maybe the news is coming from his camp.

No it wasn't, we spent £48 million in 2001 on 2 players while our biggest summer under Ferguson ever was about £60 million. We spent big in 2007, bought one player in 2008 and then lost Ronaldo and Tevez in 2009 and spent about £40m in 2009 and 2010. As I said, it looks like it has changed over the last couple of years but around 2010 when it got a bit nasty with the fans there wasn't a lot being spent.

I think it's probably net spend, and we will have cleared up loads from wages this summer with Rio, Vidic, Giggs and maybe Evra all leaving on frees. Then for player sales, we could get probably 15-20mil for Hernandez, 10m for Nani, 10-15m for Fellaini, 5m for Cleverley, 5m for Young. Can't see anyone else being sold. So we'll probably get around 50m in from sales adding on to what our normal budget is.

Our net spend wasn't close to £48m in 2001.

In 99/00 we signed Silvestre and three goalkeepers, in 00/01 we signed literally nobody and in 01/02 our net spend was £29m

If we're going gross spend then we spend £61m in 07/08

I've already said around 2009 and 2010 was when we spent nothing, we lost the Champions League final to Barcelona, lost by far our best player and spent the next year spending very little which is where we started to fall behind. Our net spend was also higher in the summer of 2001 than the summer of 2007 you mention despite our revenue having increased massively. I've already said that it looks to have changed in the last couple of years but we spent in excess of £25 million three times between 2001 and 2004 and then once between 2005 and 2013 despite football transfer fees rising hugely.

Wrong.

07/08 - £26.5m
08/09 - £33.75m
11/12 - £38.15m
12/13 - £51.1m (if you meant '2013' as starting from 2013/14)

I think that £80m would not have been enough for a guy like Moyes especially with the targets he had who all seemed to cost upwards of £30m each . I suspect that with this appointment confirmed there could be a drastic revision of transfer targets with Van Gaal backing his ability as a scout and his capacity to get more from the players already there, so maybe he will spend thirty on Shaw, thirty on Strootman ( whom it seems he will move mountains to get ) and the remainder on a new centre half whilst the proceeds he will get from sales of players like Hernandez will be used on gambles on young players in the Dutch league and the Bundasliga with our own U21s supplementing the team's needs . I've read that he is very averse to spending huge money so I suspect he'd be the one behind the sudden revision, if true .
It is also important to note that to get back into the top four we don't need a complete destroy and build operation . What we need is to have a competitive midfield and stable defence behind what is a mouthwatering attack . If we got Strootman, another midfield player, Shaw, a central defender and Rafael's back up then I'm confident that we have enough goals within the squad to reach our main objective comfortably . If LvG works his magic then that ''other midfielder could be one of Cleverley (,I've high hopes that LvG could help him relaunch his career), a rejuvinated Carrick or a rough diamond signing whilst Valera and Valencia could cover Rafael competently .

If he goes on tour and impresses he might just get a chance. LvG might not be obsessed with sending kids out on loan, for years on end. If they are not good enough after one or two loans, sell them. If they are good enough, get them playing in the first team squad.

Apologies I meant on one player, I'm not really sure this is going anywhere. I think there were issues at the club around the time of the bond issue but let's just enjoy the club going after some really good, expensive players this summer :)

Yeah but one player is a very narrow way of looking at it. We had to change our tactics and approach in the sugar daddy era. If players we valued at £25m were now going for £40m you have to decide how you want to play it.

All of the players are shitting themselves, getting their arse-licking of LvG in early.

Isn't Strootman out until Jan?

£100mil doesn't sound enough to me, especially if we are buying a left back for £30mil.

Excellent point. Footballers have a relatively short shelf life. Looking from their perspective 2 years is a long time. It could be the difference between a talented 20 year old worth taking a punt on by Premier League teams or a stagnating 22 year old destined for a career in League 2. The disparity in wages is extreme between top level and lower leagues and ideally they'd want to extract the maximum out of their peak playing careers. Let's face it, a lot of these players have dedicated their lives solely to football. They aren't educated enough to hold a good stable job outside of it unless they luck into a career of broadcasting, unlike say the NFL where a large number have college degrees and can go on to pursue other professions. If they're not good enough, sell them while they still have a chance to make it somewhere else instead of having them tag along and wasting away their careers on bit-part loan deals.

I can't see Fabregas arriving as I think Strootman and Kroos are ahead of him.

Read that he could be back around September/October and yes I do agree that £100m doesn't seem enough given the needs of the team but having seen posts in the last days of Moyes' era, when he was first linked, the general consensus then was that you literally have to force him to spend huge money . Don't know much but was just speculating because it's only last week that Woody was telling the NYSE that our ambition will be reflected by our signings this summer, the way he emphasized on that on Thursday and in Jan/Feb about our unusually high turnover this summer doesn't tally with this new figure being thrown about . This is why I suspect that LvG may have assured him that he will achieve the set objectives with less and that would have been music to his ears .

Apparently van Gaal is talking like on Dutch national TV earlier.

edit: Can this go in the van Gaal thread?

100mil will not cut it, simple as that.

30mil for Shaw - Pretty much done?
40mil for Kroos - Looks more and more likely
30mil? for Strootman - Another name we are linked to a lot.
35mil? for Hummels - We need a CB of this caliber with Rio/Vida departing

I think I speak for most on here when I say a LB, 2CM's & at least 1 CB is pretty much a must this summer. I highly doubt we will get a combination of quality players to fill these roles with 100mil.

Of course he puts the transfer down; He believes no player based in Spain will ever move to United, ever
Who is this guy? I keep seeing his tweets getting posted like gospel. Genuinely ITK?
