I don't agree what so ever on the Evra/Shaw front. You don't go and pay 25-30 million for a left back and then have another left back playing half the games throughout the season. Shaw is good enough to come straight in and be the regular starter for almost every game.

Obviously would like to see him stay for another season but he won't and shouldn't be getting 20-25 games as a starter if we do bring in Shaw. He should be used as backup, play the odd few games in the league, show up in the league cup games etc etc.

I'd rather Buttner goes than Evra.

With Shaw the 25-30m figure represents a player that could play 10-15 years with us making 500+ games. If Evra stayed he can provide leadership, decent back up and give a young kid a break if he needs it rather than thrash him out.

A back 4 of Rafael, Jones, Smalling and Shaw would have sub 400 first team appearances between them.

No doubt what so ever. I'd like Evra to stay, I'm not even debating that part. Just what was said about him potentially playing 25 games if we signed Shaw.

Again, I'm not really arguing any of that. I'm just saying that for me, Shaw is already quality and good enough to come straight in and basically play every single league game. I'm fine with Evra being a back up and helping Shaw out if we were to sign him, I'm just saying I disagree with the idea of Evra still getting that amount of game time if we actually brought Shaw and for the prices quoted.

We did it with De Gea.
And it shot his confidence and resulted in much poorer performances than when he was just given a consistent run of games.

He was very lucky Lindegaard got injured for the 2nd half of 11/12 and the 2nd half of 12/13.

Ducker's point that Evra's decline is linked to the fact that he hasn't has decent backup meaning he's been playing more than 40 games consistently for more than 4-5 seasons is spot on.

The last decent backup LB I remember us having was Heinze and that seems like an eternity ago.

Plus Evra always seems to have that spirit and passion for the club that even many of our English players lack..

You could argue that you don't buy an 18/19 year old, making such a step up in club, to play 40 games a season from the off either.

It is linked to that but it's also linked to obvious physical decline - he isn't particularly quick any more and doesn't have the stamina to track back. Some full backs adapt their game to physical decline but Evra still bombs forward, just doesn't bother putting the defensive shift in any more. I'm not sure he was ever exceptional defensively either so I don't think he could adapt anyway.

I'd agree he hasn't had good competition for a while but that's the past - this is the present and he's been a frequent weak link for us and is well past his best. He's always had a good record with injuries so we've had other priorities than bringing in an able back up. Büttner has never been good enough for me so I'd still prefer an extra year for Evra than Shaw and Shaw only, but in the next couple of seasons we undoubtedly need two new left backs.

So £80-odd million? Not sure whether that'll be enough given the amount of positions that need strengthening/replacing.

After much of Woodward's posturing throughout the season, I'll be immensely irritated if the budget is as small as that. We need four players: 1 centre half, 1 left back, two midfielders. A back up right back and a wide man would also be nice. Take Luke Shaw at £30 million, you're then left with only £50 million for the remaining positions. That just can't add up.

Around 75 if we sign Shaw for what is being said, but wouldn't it increase if we get rid of some players?

Almost 100 million we were prepared to throw on Bale last summer while making another offer for Cesc. Budget should be a bit wider than that.

Sport Witness is a shit witness.

I think it's £100 to £120m including net.

Sell players like Hernandez, Cleverley, Young, Nani and Anderson.

Agreed with Gambit, I doubt we'll have an actual numerical budget. We'll buy who we [LvG] want, and spend the money that is needed to do so.

Why would our club give any indication of how much we are willing to spend?

Woodward has been doing it all season. The broadsheets haven't been plucking up the same numbers at the same time out of thin air. You can tell when he's done one of his transfer briefings. His last was the day before Moyes got the can.

Good point. Word gets out we're spending £200 million and everyone's price goes up by another £5-10m. Within reason, I think van Gaal will certainly have the funds to sign at least four or five first team players this summer.

It won't have come from the club directly but van Gaal will have obviously been told & De Telegraaf have basically been used as his mouthpiece while he's been looking for a job so someone there has connections with him or at least someone in his camp.

T'old Woody will have been briefing the press aswell as he has been for a while I'd presume, these £150m/£200m figures etc. that have been branded about in the English media will probably have come from him.

Why would Woody be briefing the press on how much we allegedly have? Surely a child could work out what will happen!

You say that but dont forget we've already spent near £70m on Mata and Fellaini so far...

Great point but if Moyes had board's support to spend 70 millions in one year, Louie should have twice of that.

7th place is quite alarming situation enough to make some radical moves... Glazers seems to be happy about LVG but so far they didn't said anything about financial support for the new man in the office. Hopefully all is set for proper summer spending, though.

Well the second part of the sentence is promising, the budget will be spent on Bundesliga players

Nah I think we haven't set a budget, the board and manager know we need players and will do their best to get as many as possible. I'm not saying we will spend £300m or anything like that but if a player is available and LvG want's him I cant see there being a budget problem.
