You hardly think the likes of Valencia, Zaha and Nani are better? Lallana has been one of the best midfielder's in the league this season.
Valencia offers more pace, strength and gives you more width in general, and more defensive solidity. Nani is easily better but is always injured, and Zaha is a bit shit, I'll give you that. Lallana plays on the left though and would just be adding to the numbers rather then improving the team. He'd be similar to Kagawa type of player wise but he's nowhere near Shinji's level, so really I wouldn't like that transfer as it'd likely mean Moyes wants to get rid of Kagawa.

I really like Lallana, I think he's a fantastic little player, and under 'normal' circumstances I'd be all for bringing him in. But right now we need players proven right at the very top, genuine world class players in key positions.

For all our wide players and number 10s we don't have anyone who's nailed down the left wing position. So he'd improve us I think, but for the money required I agree it isn't worth it. If we're gonna spunk a lot of cash on a winger a pacey fecker would be preferable.

Kagawa's been doing as good of a job of it as anyone and the only reason that it isn't seen as nailed down is because Moyes might not like him. He's more then good enough to become a key player for us and has shown it, and has a great understanding with every other technically gifted player at the club. We don't need a new winger at all though. We're well sorted there, just need to give it time to flourish and a good midfield to let them play their stuff. And get rid of Young so he doesn't get in the way.

I think if Lallana was playing for us he wouldn't be one of the best midfielders in the league this season. Doubt he would have made much difference, all our outfield players are playing sub-par this year.

True. Much of that is down to the quality of our manager though. Besides Valencia was shite for SAF's last year in charge so it's not just this year in some player's cases.

I don't think Lallana would add anything to our team. We already have similar but better players in Mata, Januzaj and Kagawa. It would be foolish to spend money on another player who won't really have any effect on how we perform. We need to aspire to sign players on the same level as the top players around Europe like Silva, Aguero, Hazard, Costa and not mid-table quality players who may be good cover for the first team at best.

I think he is better than mid-table quality to be fair. I could see him easily starting for the likes of Arsenal, Spurs and Everton and they are hardly mid-table teams. Chances are he will also be starting for England at the WC ahead of players like Young, Welbeck and Milner who are playing for "top-tier" clubs. I agree that we don't need him. I was just replying to the post claiming that we have better wingers at the club already.

Depends what sort of wide player you are after I suppose. Those attributes you have used to describe Valencia are spot on. The problem is they could also perfectly describe a full-back. Valencia and Lallana are two completely different players. Valencia is all about pace and power. If he had the pace of Lallana, or lack thereof, he would be a Championship player at best. He rarely looks up when on the ball and tries the same thing over and over. His technical ability is very limited. He has a terrible left foot (I could count on two hands how many times I have seen him use it in his 5 seasons at the club) which is very unusual for a professional footballer at any level. Lallana on the other hand is two footed and an extremely intelligent footballer. He is on another level to Valencia in terms of technical ability. If he was blessed with Valencia's pace I could see him reaching the level of the likes of Hazard. He would certainly be a far more effective player than Valencia is.

Can't say I agree that Nani is "easily better" either but fair enough if that's your opinion.

Again I agree that we don't need him as we have similar players in the likes of Mata, Kagawa and Januzaj but nonetheless I feel he would be an upgrade on the likes of Nani and Valencia.

Lallana is a great player but he is the kind of player that stars for a midtable side only to become a bit-part player after moving to one of the elite. He wouldn't have the opportunity to have the same level of influence in our side.

I agree with you pretty much on all of that, but I feel that it's important to have variety out wide. Mata and Kagawa as starters is great to have, you can't improve that unless you bring in somebody like Reus to play on the left, but even then you can put Kagawa on the right and it'd work because of how 2 footed he is as well. They've shown some great early signs as well so it'd be in our best interest not to mess with it. Past that, I don't see a point in bringing in Lallana. He's a good player, but he doesn't offer the variety that we'd need. We have Januzaj as a youngster to offer width as well as the ability to come inside and make things happen. Nani and Valencia can offer the variety but Nani first would need to get back from injury and stay fit. He'll probably leave though.

How fast is Lallana? A pacey/skillful winger would be better, no?
Agree with this. We should be targeting a pacey and effective winger, bordering on the wide forward type of player. We have far superior guile and ingenuity from Mata, Januzaj and Kagawa as some of our attacking players that Lallana's signature would be wasted.

Very good player nonetheless and one that could still excel at one the top sides in the division, but not the player who fits the criteria we should be setting. I'd like to see a penetrative winger who can contribute 15-20 goals a season in the form of Reus or Griezmann for example.

I don't even think we need to go all in for a winger unless someone like Di Maria or Lucas Moura becomes available, which is quite possible. I'd much rather give a chance to Lingard and switch to a more narrow formation while using Januzaz as the primary starter. We should do whatever possible to get the more technical players like Mata/Kagawa game time together to progress as a team and focus majority of the spending on the two midfield spots as well as a quality center back/left back. Those are much more pressing needs.

So Luke Shaw has started following Phil Neville on Twitter.

Shaw would be perfect, and Lallana isn't needed but is a lot better than he is being given credit for.

I know it's Fjortoft, but feck it.

Interesting, I still don't get why they'd turn down £40m if they were to lose him on a free the following summer. I guess they must rate him that highly, but not highly enough to give him the contract he wants.

Is that Sirius station the one Fergie does a lot of interviews with when he's in the USA?

Yes. But I don't think this Malachian guy is the reliable one.

Lallana is a top four player. Would thrive at Liverpool for example. Would do a good on the left for City as well.

He's a squad player for a Top 4 side. Someone who could come into any top team and hold his own. We've got plenty of that quality already, we need someone who instantly takes us up a grade.

Lallana's done better in the PL than Kagawa has so I don't get why people don't seem to rate him just because he's playing for Southampton.

This I agree with. If we were in a position to consolidate something, Lallana would be a good buy.

Still, he would improve the teams above us if he were to move to them.

Lallana is ten times the player Young was.

Young used to look decent for AV just like Milner and everyone knew that wouldn't be enough at the highest level. What was SAF thinking? I don't want Lallana, but if we get him or Shaw, I would love to see their faces after their first training session with Moyes considering their current coaching set-up and the nice football they are playing :nervous:

You must have dumped your head. Ashley Young was amazing at Villa. Set up more and scored more than Lallana.
Did you actually want Young? If I recall, none of us fans did. He wasn't starting for England either and this was when we were entirely out of options on the flanks. He did start later but that was when his United career started and he looked better for England than he did for us.

Lallana is justifiably one of England's best players. He simply has to start for England in the World Cup.

If I'd have asked you in 2010 if Ashley Young was one of the best English players, you'd have said I'm crazy.

Lallana genuinely is one of the best English players we've got. He's on another level technically to other English players and is something England severely lack in.

Maybe ten times the player is hyperbole, but he's certainly better than Ashley Young's ever been.

There is great potential in Shaw following Neville on twitter. :) Just look at the last time a target followed one of our coaches!

Well I am the Caf's transfer muppet so I follow basically everyone :)
The newbies was a lonely place in Jan window without your links.

On the Lallana front; he is a very good player but so was Ashley Young at Villa. At the moment we have a lot of attacking options and i'd rather not add to that unless it was somebody who was far superior to what we currently have. Surely if we start to play the likes of RVP/Rooney/Mata/Kagawa/Nani/Januzaj together, there will be no room for a player like Lallana?

Not really.. but didn't think it was such a bad signing. The reason is though i knew how far his quality would get him. I bit like Lallana, very good player but his quality is not going to take him to the Marco Reus levels.. so whats the point. Being England's bright hope says more about England than him.

feck that I don't want Lallana, he's nowhere near the level we need to be looking at. Id take Shaw though, he'd be a great signing.
