If we're in for them and it doesn't happen then fair enough, there's not much we can do. Id bet most of those names will be moving this summer though and no champions league football granted we are still within that top 5 tier of clubs in world football with supposedly a big transfer kitty to spend, we should be doing everything within our power to make one of those deals happen.

We won't sign James McCarthy ffs. Van Gaal will know feck all about him.

Why not? He's been angling for a PL move for a year now (even before United became available). He's had a lot of time in between Netherlands games. There is no reason why he could not have been watching a lot of premier league football and been aware of the brightest talents within the premier league in preparation for his eventual move to the premier league.

Well maybe my initial statement was exaggerated, I'm sure he knows something about him. However I doubt he will know enough about him to think that he can solve our midfield problems, which he won't.

It is ridiculous though isn't it, they are two of the top midfielders in the world, by all accounts they are available for the right price and we are not interested because we want to pursue some random dutch guys or perhaps some premier league midtablers.

I swear to god Van Gaal wants to win with minimum quality in the side to indulge his ego.The money is there for FFS spend it.Rant over.

Thank you I feel better now.

Van Gaal has yet to set foot in OT as manager and you're having a go at him ? Sounds like you need to get a grip.

All these journos know who isn't on the list but none of them know who is on the list?

I think you'll be in for a bit of a shock.

Depending on who Liverpool and United bring in during the window will obviously change expectations. But if the league was to start tomorrow I'd fancy us to finish higher than Liverpool would.

For frig sake...its May! You would think there were hours to go in the transfer window to read this thread. Everything is speculation and we take it as gospel but moreso because its what we want to hear.
Van Gaal will spend the money as he sees fit. He doesn't however need to go buy players to satisfy our own muppetry.

I would be all for developing an identified talent as opposed to spending majassive amounts on players. Look at Schmeichel, Vidic, Ronaldo and even Evra...players we took a small punt on, who went on to be key players for the club.

We do not need a £40million Vidal or a £25million Hummels to have a successful transfer window. I would rather have 4 or 5 players who will be playing their hearts out to make it at the highest level than 1 or 2 who have already made a name for themselves and if they do lose form, they are crucified by the press as well as the manager.

In a nutshell.....
  • 3 months to go in the window...not 3 days
  • We don't need to spend heavily to satisfy our own cravings
  • Big purchases mean feck all. Developing talent is where its worked for us.

All these journos know who isn't on the list but none of them know who is on the list?
Summed up in one sentence.:) They have absolutely no idea who the new manager wants. Moyes was probably playing some kind of fantasy football on the assumption we would qualify for europe. Maybe with no idea how he would fit them into the team. Louis van Gaal is not that daft or desperate.

Right, so Van Gaal can't possibly know enough about McCarthy but a Caftard does. Ok.

We don't even know yet if some of the players we have will up their game for him, playing in a different system.

People keep bringing up SAF.

I know SAF is the best of all time. I know that van Gaal is not as good as SAF. The thing you need to understand is that van Gaal only needs to be better than David Moyes for us to finish in the top 4. I am not going into next season wondering if we will finish in the top 4, I am going into next season wondering which of the top 4 spots we will finish.

We got rid of Moyes and hired van Gaal. 3/4 of the problem was solved right there.

Not to me it doesn't. I just find some of our fanbase turning their nose up at players like McCarthy to be a bit strange. Liverpool nearly won the league with a midfield containing Allen and Henderson.

The longer we limit ourselves in midfield the more of a problem it becomes.

Exactly what i just posted!!! Spot on. A punt on players eager to make a name and succeed at the highest level has worked for us before. Where this instant need to buy a player at £40million has come from i'll never know.

No need to get upset over Fabregas anyway, he was never coming here. Him and Kroos were always unlikely.

Bizarre. I almost wish United made no transfers just so we'd watch the nutters spouting this 'the squad is fine as it is' shite squirm. But then I remember how horrible a season that would mean.

Wtf this is the same squad that one the league at a canter the season before minus Vidic Giggs and Rio but added Fletcher Mata and Fellaini. We should comfortably finish top 4 regardless the signings.

I think everyone is hoping everything will be solved in one tranfer window, it probably won't. If he can sign the right players to get us back up there, the next season we can go back in for the big boys, whoever that might be.

That's the thing, there is no way we will be handing out our shopping list to journos. As much as we would all love a big name player to come, developing identified talent has been our forte over the past 20 years.

Without knowing what was going on behind the scenes, nobody can know if the present squad can deliver the goods again. None of us know how much turmoil Moyes caused and if LVG can lift spirits.

It's possible of course. In fact I think they could well drop off a great deal next year with 10-15 more matches to consider but to say so defiantly that Liverpool are not even a concern is bemusing. Same with Arsenal. They're not going to be worse after the window and may even add Fabregas as a bonus.

Our signings might be from the next tier down to get us back to the Top 4. Liverpool managed it with players most people on here were sniffing at when they were bought. If the players respect the manager and like the style you can get great results.

I wouldn't swap our squad with Arsenal or Liverpool but Chelsea and City have better squads imo.

Nail on the head....it annoys me how our own fans. In all clubs develop this kind of snobbery that if a player isn't a galactico then he is a poor signing.

Irwin
Kanchelskis
Schmeichel
Ronny Johnsen
Ole G Solskjaer
Park
Rafael
Vidic
Evra
Ronaldo

There are others who have left the club and done reasonably well for themselves.
Forlan
Howard

I'd argue that based on the fees and the eras these players were signed...they were not considered galacticos or top names but went on to become key players in our success with a few there who could be considered club legends.

So would I be right in saying it appears Moyes was happy to leak his targets to the press, whereas LVG has different targets and appears less inclined to share them with the media?

If that's all that's happened, why is everyone on the verge of Armageddon?

"Jihad" in the transfer forum.

What an unnecessary shit storm.
 thought it was a typo, there's always good entertainment in the transfer thread during our summer windows. Meltdowns are inevitable with how we do business.

In regards to LvG's transfer list, we do need to strengthen in key areas. If we don't, I don't care how good van Gaal is, we will struggle to finish top four. This is the Barclays Premier League, the most competitive league in the world, it is a dog fight to make the top four because there are 6 teams who could make it next year arguably, ourselves included. I'm not too concerned if we don't buy an already established player at say the midfield were we do need to improve because van Gaal can find some young talent and give them the opportunity to step up. We will sign some young talent and I'm expecting our only marquee signings to be Shaw and possibly Strootman. I guarantee van Gaal will make some under the radar signings this summer where we will say, is he any good? Then when they do produce, we will attribute it to van Gaal developing them like he's known for.

We won the league easily as RVP had an amazing season and the other 'big' clubs had very poor seasons.
You think the other top clubs will fall back next season? The soundings seem to be that they will al be aggressive in the transfer market. They're quite likely to be all stronger.
God help us if we are back to praying RVP has a miracle season.

I really can't believe so many on here think we will waltz into the top 4 without a major squad rejuvenation. I pray the Glazers are not thinking that way.

So much assumption.

Most of those top clubs also had poor seasons this season, fact is we we're on another level to all of those clubs (usually).
I expect City and Chelsea to up their game next season, but Arsenal & Liverpool are there for the taking. Had we not been so spectacularly shite this season we probably could have finished 3rd.

Fine, bring it on. Let Arsenal and Liverpool spend big, we'll sit on our hands and go with the same squad, and top them both!

The club needs to handle the press briefings better. You can't go from telling them we're signing players and then a week later tell them they aren't on the list.

So much assumption.
It's quite amazing. People are ready to get angry with the new manager and the chief executive because of assumed failures. Last summer really has deeply scarred some of our fans.

Its not going to happen, we're not going to sit on our hands and not spend. However I would be surprised if said clubs especially Arsenal end up spending big enough to cause us major problems.

The squad that won the league will be almost a couple of years older now. Rio and Vidic, when fit, played a big part. They're gone. Evra has more miles on the clock now. Likewise Carrick, who looked shaky last season. Cleverley looks to have taken a step back. We relied heavily on RvP every other week to dig us out. I don't know, it's not nearly as bad as it's being made out, but I think the current squad is substantially weaker than back then. For me Fellaini adds almost nothing and Mata, brilliant player though he is, hasn't nailed down a position yet.

The way I'd put it, that team was brilliantly resilient and overperformed. I don't see that being possible with this squad. A few really good players would perk the rest up and also bring back a bit of the fear factor. As things stand teams know we're vulnerable.

Cause us problems? If we don't fix this squad they won't be issues for us alright. We'll be back in the EL race again.

I'm sure they are not but we are better than Arsenal and Liverpool IMO it's ridiculous how many in this forum are under rating our squad after years of domination and then one disaster of a season.
