I'm surprised at how fussy everyone is despite the fact we're so shit in the market. The City/Chelsea way of going about their business seems to have deluded people into thinking you can only be successful by signing the best players in world football.

What really needed is for the most profitable club in world football to keep most of its money in the bank and buy cheap mediocrities who can be turned into world beaters by the magic alchemy of the manager. That will put us back on top.

Except, of course, that poorer clubs could pursue that strategy just as well. Which makes you wonder why football is dominated by the richest clubs? There's no understanding it at all.

and how many millions would we miss out on if we dont make it to the champions league next season as well. if you combine that income im sure it would be close to a 100 mil. we wont go into administration, thats not what im implying. i merely stating that establishing business associations soon might become as competitive as the league itself. we would no longer be the all powerful club that we used to be if this continues. the ripple effect of missing out on CL is being underestimated.

Yes of course we would lose out but in two years time we would still be as profitable as we were last season while in the CL

Mou seems to be a real transfer muppet where ever he goes. Should have got him last year. We would have top players by now.

Signing a decent option in a few different positions is plastering over a shotgun wound? Huh?

He plays two positions and he's not better than the players we have in them, if we merely want midfield cover then we have Cleverley and Fletcher, if we want LB options we have Shaw, James and Young, we don't need to add a Joe average to positions in which we already have plenty of averageness.

They clearly wouldn't have sold Vermaelen to us that early if they knew Barca held some form of interest and they had the chance to sell there instead and Rojo's nothing on our part, the problem lies with Sporting & the third party. If Sporting had all his rights you can guarantee it'd be done by now. If you're gonna complain about transfers at least do it about things that aren't out of our hands.

So let's wrap this Vermaelen thing up quickly. Barcelona wasn't really interested in Vermaelen until they knew for certain that Marquinhos was a no go. If they do that deal in June/July with the quoted 15m Barca had to pay, because of us, I strongly think that even Arsenal would sell to us. There wasn't any other club interested back then. Dogded a bullet for that price IMO but certainly a mistake even letting it go so far that Arsenal had the upper hand and could choose to sell him to Barcelona. Even if they don't agree the 15m, then atleast you know the deal is a no goer and you can concentrate on other targets.

If Sporting had all his rights it would be Bilbao-Herrera mk2, as 30m€ would be way too much for him. You have to look at those whole dealings from the moment Van Gaal was appointed. He said he knew from the US tour where he wanted to strengthen and still not one single signing because again they let other clubs/players play with their interest. Like with Fabregas last year, don't spend all of your fecking transfer window on option A, make a deadline for him/the club and if not just move on.

and even worse, some of the players we have will look to leave

Relaxed about this. VP and Rooney won't get the contracts they do elsewhere.
Mata doesn't seem the type to kick up a fuss.

Januzaj and Dea Gea are the only big risks I think. De Gea needs extending asap.

Do you really believe clubs will make no contact with their 2nd/3rd choice transfer targets whatsoever until they 100% know they won't get their 1st choice? Arsenal will have known about some form of interest from Barca for a while and they'd have strung us along for a while to wait and see if a move abroad materialises like it did. There's no chance we'd have got him as early as June whatever the case.

No, it wouldn't be €30m considering he isn't gonna go for €30m when he does inevitably leave Sporting this window otherwise Sporting would just hold out for even more cash now considering it's up them and not the third party what happens to Rojo.

Most profitable but nowhere near the richest nor the most attractive. We've become even less attractive following last season and the loss of CL football. I'm being realistic with my expectations which a lot of people don't seem to be.

Established players aren't guaranteed to make us better, and they're also the most difficult to obtain. Who said we need to buy cheap mediocrities? It's not difficult to understand how Atletico have been successful in recent times - they've signed talented players and put them in a system that has got the best out of them. They've used their patience and given game-time to up and coming players, something which the sugardaddy clubs don't have time for. Even Arsenal do the same - if we signed Koscielny, Mertesacker, Flamini or Sanogo at the stage they were when Arsenal signed them now, people would lose their minds. People fail to realise that even the likes of Juventus have followed similar strategies and not signed the best in Europe. Then everyone manages to go mad whenever we're linked with of their players for huge money. Do people realize what price Vidal went for? Or Gundogan? Then they go to a bigger club and everyone complains about how we're missing out. Players like Daley Blind are no different - people completely change their mind when those players go to someone like Dortmund and start performing - and suddenly they were always a sure thing and we missed out by not picking them up in the first place.

We finished seventh, have no CL football and have the Glazers at the helm - this isn't a quick process, time to be realistic with our ability to sign players.

It's less this, and more that we need to learn the importance of speed. Decide who you want, get word of what is likely to be the cost and wages, and either get it done without fuss, or move on.

No long summer sagas.

Point taken, but my original post was in reference to people complaining about signing the likes of Daley Blind. Is it ideal? Probably not. Will he help? Yes. It's a realistic signing at this point in time, once we get back in the top four then we can expect more.

Everyone will ignore me probably and get angry over this deal but CdS has been ridiculously unreliable this season. Don't lose your shit over it.

I wish the Caf twitter account would repost one of these tweets to get Moyes fecking mug off the front page.

As for Mexes......

Cant believe we missed out on Garay. with the form hes in, he would have walked into any defense in the world. IMO We should be going for someone within the league like Vertonghen.
