I can't believe that any world class manager who loves being thorough, who wants to take a club from 7th to 1st would risk just buying players for the sake of buying before assessing the players at his disposal properly, that would be unheard of I'd say. Horrendous.

How long does it take to asses the fact we lost 3 defenders and have an average midfield, with Carrick injured for 3 months. Yes, there will be certain players he can take a closer look at, but surely anyone can see the holes we have in our squad.

Yes but you need to know who can step up and if the players we have remaining are up to the task as well. For example everyone is well aware that Vidic and Ferdinand have left, LVG decides to play a 3 man centre defence and needs to know how well that will work before he decides if he needs to buy a left footed, ball playing centre back. No point spending and then realising that Smalling and Jones dont work in that formation.

Blind is a decent utility man but I get the feeling he is to LVG what Fellaini was for Moyes. Back up option.

It's not surprising, most of them still evaluate the team in term of individualities, they absolutely don't care about the fact that the team can be stronger,
with the players we already have.

There is a possibility they can be stronger on the pitch but you still strengthen the squad. City and Chelsea were already ahead of us player and managerial wise but they are not resting on their laurels they are strengthening the team further. Real Madrid won the CL and have the worlds best player but they are buying more and more better quality players however dubious their funding seems to be. Barca had a bad season last year although still in the CL, they go out and buy a biting cnut who just happens to be one of the best forwards in the world. Despite the fact they already have Neymar and Messi!
We have lost a fair chunk of experience in one swoop and have signed two players only so far. One LB for last seasons two left backs (who is already injured) and one very good midfielder to add to a pile of steaming mediocrity we already have. Our best midfielder besides Herrera is also injured for three months.
LvG is a major improvement on Moyes that is plainly obvious but the squad needs better players for us to compete and time is running out that is why a lot of fans are a) after a marquee signing and B) worried time is running out.

So whomever he decides to buy to replace said players must be a snap decision? His decision on the total number of players he wants in the squad and formations he believes we can play, which would influence who we buy, must be a snap decision? Mmmk, I will take your word for it. This football club management lark seems pretty straightforward to me, where do I sign up?

Vidic left months ago, we told Ferdinand he could leave months ago and he would've known about evra a good while ago. Yes, we should've had replacements sorted already.

Replacements the MANAGER WANTS who happens to have only finished his assessment about 2 weeks ago. I'm sure Woodward could have signed a CB or two willy nilly but what good is that if it is not the type of van Gaal wants? He's got a history of not playing players he didn't want signed. The only CB target we were in for that we know for sure is Vermaelen and to be fair, there wasn't much to be done there by Woody as Wenger played hardball by asking for Smalling in return. Such a move would have been counter productive.

You could easily make an argument for him being our best midfielder last season, however bad you thought he was.

Not having a go but how could you make that argument? He was poor in pretty much every appearance. I know the vast majority of our players disappointed last season, but I remember the likes of Cleverley performing well away to Arsenal.

You'd struggle with that argument and even if you won, it would be the very definition of faint praise.

I know I'm in a tiny minority who think he could still be a decent central midfielder for us but even I think he was pretty terrible for the whole of last season.

Nonsense.

I didn't want us to sign him what so ever but he actually wasn't that bad last season. The shit he gets from some of our fans is embarrassing.

Fellaini did have some good games. Usually against poor teams, like West Brom and Newcastle, but still...

I agree, he's been getting a lot of heat because he was our only signing last summer. Too much expectations on him + Moyes' results + the notion that he was Moyes' personal pick led to him being singled out a lot.

He's clearly not worth what we spent on him last season but then it's not his fault that we left it so late and only signed him and our midfield was piss poor last season in general, not just him

Christ, he wasn't even the best midfielder named Fellaini...

His best performance was probably the West Ham game when he played centre-back every time West Ham went wide, but I don't think he stood head and shoulders above anyone else, except from a physical stand point.

Good lad Fellaini. If he really wants to make it, he'll get his chances.
I hope he does stay and turns it around, I really do! Everyone had a crap season last season you can't judge him based on that! But people insist on taking the piss out of him. I genuinely feel sorry for him.

Where did he mention a snap decision? The midfield has needed strengthening since SAF was in charge and we have also lost 3 of what has been our main back four over the last 7 years. He knows we need a centre back he stated this on tour and has subsequently bid for Vermaelen and now we are apparently after this Rojo.
Maybe he thought Carrick was good enough to to play alongside our one midfield addition but he is out for three months and despite this romanticizing about Fletcher, yes its great he is back after a long illness but has he ever been that good, he is very limited in what he can actually do on the pitch and is now also a lot slower than he was back in his one stand out season 08-09.
No one said managing is easy either Moyes proved that he could not get anything more out of this squad higher than a 7th place finish (this again highlights the genius of SAF).
LvG has proven a more successful manager but it is imperative he gets this club back into the CL, it has been widely reported that we can sustain one season without it but any more would have huge implications financially. (adidas deal has such a clause in it).
All this is not to say that the required signings will be made in time before the window closes but the fans especially on a forum are allowed to vent frustrations especially as we seem to have a saga every summer that rarely bears fruit and the faith in Woodward has never been high.

Fellaini defending is the new thing? Ugh, He doesn't suit how we play at all, especially in this new pass and move system, and he wants to stay because he'll never get near another top club if he goes and no one else will pay him close to what we are paying him, it's not some heroic and valiant act.

Trust me, he absolutely was. Read his thread from last season, he was average at best.

The only reason Fellani stays is cos we dont get vidal, we need some cover. We wait till Jan for Strootman.

Fellaini never really got going last season, due to being injured. I think he could yet make a good impression here. He's still pretty young to improve.

If he could do what he did v Valencia (and by that I mean be decisive, mobile and win the ball back well) regularly over the course of a season he'd be worth a spot in the squad. Whether or not we can take that risk based on little more than a half-paced friendly is the real question, though. Even at Everton that wasn't necessarily the way he played.
