So he hasn't played there for fiorentina then has he? Your original response to me asking why people thought he could play wingback was saying that I obviously hadn't seen him for fiorentina, that implies what exactly?

Btw nice googling, next time actually watch the player before making a comment like "spoken like someone who obviously hasn't seen him play for fiorentina last season".

My reply was for you mentioning him as 'bang average' , which he isn't.

I'm getting concerned with people on here. Who are all these targets we've missed out on? I think it's clear we were in for Vermaelen as it's been confirmed, quite clear the issue wasn't our end however it was that Arsenal didn't want to sell to us and if they did it'd be a deal that wasn't worth doing because it wouldn't benefit us.

So who are all these other targets we've apparently missed out on so far? I'd say nobody on here even knows who our actual targets are yet you're claiming we've missed out on more and have reason to be concerned?

I'm talking more in general over previous seasons, not just this summer.

Exactly. Why would Arsenal solve a problem for us when they can sell him abroad? They stalled the deal. I don't know what more people think we could have done.
It was a shrewd move by Wenger. Appearing open to trade but suggesting an offer that would never have worked.

Watch Vermaelen getting injured before his first competitive game, we'll have the last laugh here. Five year deal + £15m fee, I can see why Barca supporters are not too fond of Zubizarreta

That's your opinion - what's concerning is we've failed to land a player who the manager wanted.
Venger was never going to let us have him he's learnt his lesson from RVP hence the Smalling swap! It was a massive long shot for us to sign him that's why we are also rumoured to be in for Benetia. He isn't the only defender in the world. Sometimes targets aren't always dead certs to sign! I'm pretty sure there is a list of others you don't put all your eggs in one basket particularly in the transfer market, it's dog eat dog!

I hope there's a centre half at La Masia who's ready in case.

Benatia will be as hard to get from Roma - im not sure Van Gaal sees him as an alternative either. Vermaelen provided balance as he was left footed

Previous seasons shouldn't even come into play though. The reality is we got Shaw and Herrera done very early, two quality players. We've pulled out of the Vermaelen deal due to Arsenal trying to push through shit deals for our end.

Nobody seems to have a clue what's going on behind the scenes, not even the journalists. We could do three/four more deals or we could go into the new season with barely a new deal done, you never know with van Gaal. Personally I don't see a single reason to be concerned.

I think we just need something... anything, positive soon.

We are a week away from the start of the season and still lacking the necessary quality / depth in defense / midfield.

Beginning to get a bit tetchy...

You support Barca, right? I have no idea what your club's been doing at CB for about six years now, it's a mirror of our midfield woes! Astonishing how incapable two clubs of that size can be in solving the one area they lack desperately!
Yeah, Barça got away with it under Pep purely because they'd dominate possession so much and their pressing was intense. They'd almost defend with the ball. Zubizarreta is an ex goalkeeper, so surely he'd know the benefits of having a good defense. I've also been of the view that Pique hasn't even the same since he and Shakira got in serious relationship and since Puyol had his bad run of injuries.

Just over a week before the season starts I'll be very surprised if we see some signings maybe one at most, we'll see more departures.

It's very possible Hummels will leave Dortmund next season do you think Barca will pay big money to get him?

Well Honigstein said Dortmund has a policy of letting only one star player leave each summer, so if they're quick enough, they could get him but there's a fair chance Reus will leave Dortmund next summer due to that release clause he's got. Zubizarreta must be decisive. Barça could be banned from making transfers next season anyway, so Hummels might be a non starter.

Vermaelen is not worth £15m, it would have be a massive gamble. He hasn't played enough in the last 2 years. Squad player for £8m no more, I rate Smalling much more. Vermaelen is shocking defensively at times, good going forward though. Typical Barca buy, good going forward crap at the back. I'm glad to hear this today, maybe we can buy someone reliable and not some Arsenal reject.

Whether you wanted him or not, Louis Van Gaal did and now he is off to Barcelona. Another target missed out on, getting bit concerned now.

Concerned about our rivals not selling to us when the best possible option for them was to sell aboard to a club willing to pay the same money? Even though I wanted him its hardly a devastating blow.

That's a pretty poor policy they should be aiming to keep their star players although it's not exactly possible for them.

Apparently Dortmund had financial issues about a decade ago and would want to avoid a repeat. Reus will go next summer, Hummels will stay next summer I think.
