Yes.....isn't that what elite level clubs who boast about having "record breaking" fees are all about in the transfer window.

He is not worth £50m. Neither do i want to see a £50m defender at United to watch him get out paced by Loric Remy! Unless they are a top 5 'attacking player' no way should we be spending £50m on a player.

Yet 10/15 years ago 30m on Ferdinand in retrospect has looked good value, or Vidic who was never the quickest and would be outpaced by Remy

Or Thiago Silva to PSG for £20 so million 2years ago?. Vidic didnt cost £50m and is faster than Hummel's. If his going to cost £50m he best be perfect.

I'd very quickly forget about any fee once he's in a United shirt lining up that defence. We loose Vidic and Ferdinand in one window I'd happily pay 60m for someone like him. Why would you care about the fee anyway? It's not your bank balance.

His not worth it. I don't have to care about the money. I care about us being ripped off.

50m for Hummels

I love the guy but he's not worth more than £40m and that's only if we were in a bidding war.

This isn't football manager, we're not some oil-funded club, and we don't need to prove our worth as a club to any player by enticing him or his agent with money.

Also as someone said, LvG appears to want a left footer, so Hummels may not be what he wants. People just seem to want a big name signing even if it is the wrong signing. Also if we spend that on him, that might scupper a big deal for a midfielder. So great, the defense might look sexy but the midfield is still lacking.

So well go big for Vermaelen to beat Barca but won't stump up the extra Cash for someone like Hummels who would play for another 10 years or so into his late thirties and has no severe injury record to speak of.

I'm sorry but I'm beginning to seriously doubt Woodward again. All this business of Vidal's knee comes across as any excuse to hold the deal off because he's bulking at the price. I don't believe for one second his condition is so bad that we simply won't sign him yet were pretty much nailed on for Strootman whos injury was potentially career threatening.
But, for the tenth time, these decisions are not Woodwards. He's the negotiator and deal organiser. The decisions about who we go for and who we don't are not his, they're LVG's

EXACTLY.

I'm f*cking sick of seeing Woodward blamed for things he isn't responsible for, weeks before the window even closes.

It's not his fault LVG wanted different plans to the previous manager and wanted to assess his squad before signing players. And it's not his fault we missed out on the CL, making attracting big players harder. Nor will it be his fault if Vidal's knee is cocked, or if Cuadrado/Vermaelen choose Barca over us.

So we are not signing Vidal over his knee injury fears but are more than willing to beat any competition for a back up defender at Arsenal who is constantly injured?

Isn't that like the 25th agreement we've had for Vidal? Bet he doesn't know if he's coming or going

Lord almighty! Thank you for this post - how can people not get this?

Vidal would probably cost 40m and a shitload in wages - Vermaelen not so much. That said, I would not like to see us sign Vermaelen unless he was basically free.

La Stampa are said to be very reliable right?

I really do not know, however here is some information ( which I can't confirm as 100% reliable)

Wicky @Wicknes007 Follow
La Stampa is owned by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles(Co-founded by Giovanni Agnelli). Juventus is owned by Agnelli family who owns 30% of FCA.

BeIN sports had a link with PSG and reported weeks ago that di Maria was about to join us. I remain sceptical.

Yup.

Also I don't see why the paper (if it has same owners) would reveal something which would put Juve's own negotiation power into trouble.

Every club will be over Reus next summer. So Arsenal can keep dreaming.

So we'll just not sign anyone else then?

This is the way the football world works now. You don't try and scrounge 20p off a deal. If you want the player you stump up the cash. If some of that cash is effectively a bribe to the agent then so be it.

Roll with the times.

That's what I thought as well but this Vidal saga has sucked the life out of everyone's faith in every source bar the BBC and offical MUFC site.

Yep, to the point where even the Chilean national coach's words are said to sensationalist tabloid nonsense for click bait.

Aye. To be honest though I think we're all a bit sick of this saga (bar one or two of the hardcore muppets) and just want the season to start so we can forget about it.

If he comes, great. If not, oh well, roll on the new season anyway. Counting down the days to the Swansea game.

Exactly.

It's always the manager who decides the targets. The CEO's job is to try and achieve those targets. Now we have ZERO inkling as to whether or not LVG is interested in Vidal or Hummels this summer. If LVG comes out and says that he wants Vidal for example and Woody doesn't deliver, then Woody should cop the blame. Until then, I don't know why people are so keen to deride him.

I don't remember the caf bashing Gill when we failed to land Moura or Hazard for instance.

It's last summer's shambles that caused people to look for a scape goat. To be fair, I was one of them in the immediate aftermath of the 27.5m floormop scandal. Since then I realised Woodward probably couldn't do much due to dithering Dave. This time's different, we have a very decisive manager and Woody will deliver what van Gaal needs, I'm sure of that. After all, it's said that van Gaal was Woodward's recommendation to the board so it's 'his' man.

BeIN France are said to have a direct link with PSG. It was some other Bein Sports that was reporting this. Just like Sky Sports Uk is more reliable than Sky Italia.

Anyway, La Stampa are known to have links close to Juve though not very reliable, they are among the more reliable if that makes sense when it comes to Juve based matters.

It's not like we are losing the world class Rio/Vidic partnership of 5 years ago tbf. Rio is finished and Vidic is becoming more and more injury prone and rapidly living what little pace he had.
