Weird how Man United and Barca are duking it out for a player the resident muppet brigade have brushed off as a "do no want" sicknote.

To be fair there are a lot of reasons we both would want Vermaelen. For a start we both need CBs who are excellent on the ball and there are very few players like that around. Vermaelen's style, personality and previous time at Ajax should ensure he fits in quickly either under LvG or at Barca. Also, he is relatively cheap and obtainable.

Not sure the fact that Barca are in for him says that much though. CBs are to them what CMs are to us, they're a little desperate at this stage.

Anyway, injuries are the real problem with Vernaelen no matter how highly we rate him. If we do get him then I hope our medical department knows what it's doing...

It is surprising how hard Barca are actually pushing to get him.. I expect that he'll sign with them, Wenger would prefer that and he gets CL football.

It's true that minus Injuries he's a top defender but his recent luck with injuries has been bad! Doesnt justify the 15 million price tag

Not Manchester United, we'd be a centre-back short with little to no alternatives and little to no time to pursue 'em.

In the case of Barca they probably figure that the much less physical style of play and the fact they have the ball most of the time will lessen his chance of injury, plus they value a CB who can bring the ball out more so than whether they are great at defending, so Vermaelen fits that criteria.

Why would we offer 5 million more, if the player wants to come to United over Barca ?
Does he? News to me.

And it's Arsenal we're trying convince anyway, if you're going to be asking that question then surely you'd be talking about wages, if Vermaelen wants us then why offer higher wages than Barca.

Well that's what the Sky article says, that the player prefers United according to their sources.

10-12 million is a good fee for him as he is injury risk at that age and will go for free next season. If he insists on United, i don't think Arsenal have a choice and taking a hit like that is not something Wenger likes to do. Same as with Van Persie.

Maybe he wants us because of the higher wages only or because his girlfriend who he is having a child with is a british TV presenter IIRC or he just wants to stay in England and play with his good friend Van Persie and feels he'd start more at United etc..

I for one wouldn't mind if we signed Vermaelen. We need squad depth at the back, he has experience and he isn't going to play every game. He's one of Arsenal's best defenders when fit but we said the same about RVP before we signed him.

"However, Sky sources have revealed that United are Vermaelen’s preferred destination and the Old Trafford club will have no problem matching or beating Barca’s offer."

So well go big for Vermaelen to beat Barca but won't stump up the extra Cash for someone like Hummels who would play for another 10 years or so into his late thirties and has no severe injury record to speak of.

I'm sorry but I'm beginning to seriously doubt Woodward again. All this business of Vidal's knee comes across as any excuse to hold the deal off because he's bulking at the price. I don't believe for one second his condition is so bad that we simply won't sign him yet were pretty much nailed on for Strootman whos injury was potentially career threatening.

Not to mention he'd actually be a significant improvement on what we have. We don't just need another body in defence, we also need to buy someone who will become our best defender.

Barcelona going for Vermaelen doesn't make him a better player all of a sudden. He's a defender that can't really defend and is always injured. Wage thief.

Hummels doesn't want to come right now. That's the difference.
At almost every opportunity he's denied wanting to leave Dortmund, whether it's been us chasing him, Barca, Bayern or whoever.

Vidal I'll agree with, but even then our interest in him doesn't seem as nailed on anymore.

My own theory on the Barca links is they've whittled down a starting CB for the cheapest price since they've significantly improved their squad with big buys. He definitely is not their first choice but since Marquinhos is off the cards and Hummels would fetch a big fee they've taken the cheap option in Vermaelen the difference is they will get him and we won't (sort of glad).

Well sign Vlaar for a hefty fee, probably 20m or so.

They don't want to sell Hummel's so we would need to offer £30+m for them to even listen. Its hardly the same as a small 12m fee.

Vermaelen would cost 10 to 12 million. Hummels probably cost 40 million or around if they sel.

We want a Left footed CB to play left side of the 3. Hummels in this system probably can play on the center only and maybe right side.

Yeah agreed, so why the hell are we not offering that?! The price won't drop next year, why are we so worried about fees all of a sudden when we spent almost 30m on an 18 y/o who most likely won't start as the wing back until Young screws up.

Because they are not going to sell him this year. What is the point? So we can continue bidding until they accept our £50m bid!

Yes.....isn't that what elite level clubs who boast about having "record breaking" fees are all about in the transfer window.
