if we're playing 2 strikers each week, the idea of selling Hernandez for sub £10m seems mad.

VP and Rooney are unlikely to play all the games, Welbeck normally gets a knock or 2, so he'd be ideal as a 4th man

I would add that Mata & Januzaj can both play as a second striker (if needed) so if United are just going to keep Hernandez as the 4th option then surely the two players i mentioned can cover that position.

I'd like Hernandez to stay but we can't keep everyone, and the ones i'd prefer to leave are not attracting many admirers.

Welbeck really has a chance to step up this year. Odds on to start the season, with VP coming up to full fitness, and will be the pace we need.

My issue is where Januzaj plays if we keep Hernandez and Kagawa. He'd essentially be 5th choice striker and 3rd choice attacking mid.

Surely that has to dent your certainty that Vidal is coming?
I still see no reason as to why we can't retain both Kagawa and Januzaj and the pair can still get a fair share of game-time. Rotate van Persie, Rooney, Welbeck and Januzaj between the two forward positions along with Mata and Kagawa in attacking midfield and we would still have our six best attackers and a more balanced frontline.

Kagawa should definitely stay. He's not going to be a nailed on starter, but there is so much dross here that should leave before him and he will still get plenty of games, if Hernandez and Nani were to leave.

Herrera, Vidal, Fletcher and Carrick with Carrick out for 3 months, Kagawa will get time between there and the 10 role ;)

We've said that on here, every year, since 2011...Bit like how it's always going to be "Anderson's year"

haha ahem yes.
But really feel it this year.

Cripes, even Young is looking tasty so far.

He's a young lad on a long contract and still learning his trade.....his time will come.

That would be a concern, but if Hernandez leaves he could be rotated in attack where van Persie and Rooney frequently pick up injuries anyway. Hernandez offers assurance over added goals, but not much else and Januzaj is the future. I think it would be worth the risk, even if RVP and Rooney miss portions of the season. It would be a show of faith, not only for him, but Welbeck too.

I'm sure Moyes didn't plan on giving him so many games last season, but he took his chance spectacularly. He can play himself in to the side, he's got the potential.

Wouldn't argue that but was just saying, its not the same pressures of giving him game time as others given his age and development. Also less obvious where he's going to play if we keep this format. He's our future number 10 when Mata returns to Spain.....

Very ture @mufcwarm92

Which is exactly why United can afford to lose Hernandez in this case.

Yes, Hernandez is a fans favorite but fans also love Shinji (especially on the cafe) and fans want to see Januzaj and other youth players coming into the senior team too.

But they can't all play! and sometimes you need to make a choice and live with it...lucky this season United(appear) to have a manager willing to make those decisions.

Wasn't he one of Villa's bright points last season? I'll be surprised if Villa avoid relegation. They've done awful in the market.

Joe Cole, Senderos and Richardson while being linked to Moses. I didn't think anyone would beat Big Sam's Downing and Carroll swoop last summer, but this just might have done it.

He'll get games, but unless there's an injury to RVP or Rooney, he'll mostly just be a sub, especially as we won't rotate much without Champions league football. Think he could get around 10-15 goals this season though, playing as a sub and the occasional start when one of them is injured (bound to happen given their histories).

You're not in Europe. If you had Europa league you'd have a fair point, but you don't need that big of a squad when you're playing in just domestic competition.

The squad is going to look thin under this system. We need to be mindful of what we get rid of if they are not replaced. We have to remember some of those players in the starting 11 on tour have really poor injury records. For example Smalling and Jones often get injured even when they weren't playing. Young, Valencia, Raf, RVP (not on tour I know) and Fletch have shocking injury records.

Sometimes it easy to forget how physically demanding the Prem is....The young lads playing on tour are creating a bit of an illusion of the squads depth!!! Good players but no way ready for the PL.

It's a fair point irrespective of European football. We would have six competent players (van Persie, Rooney, Welbeck, Kagawa, Mata and Januzaj) for three positions, which is the perfect number. All would get a fair share of games.

Not when three of them will be expecting to play nearly every game.

Three of them won't play every game due to injuries, form and the team in mind. Fortunately, van Gaal won't cater to the needs of the 'stars' and won't give them a free pass in the side. All will play enough games, particularly with van Persie's frequent injuries.

Reading that article, Ogden has clearly been thoroughly briefed about our sale plans, and told absolutely feck all about our targets.
Yep, he's still going on about Hummels.

Feels like he doesn't know anything about anything actually. Van Gaal willing to experiment with Zaha? Is that why Zaha was training with the out of favours like Nani last night?

Another left sided wing back? When Van Gaal has already said he likes James and Young?

Sounds like he's just rehashing old stories or has been talking to Woodward, who probably hasn't heard from Van Gaal about his views on the squad post America.

I like the part where he said Van Gaal is looking for another CM. No mention of any specific players. None.
