To be fair in a system that utilises wing backs and our only right sided full back being Rafael who's almost always out injured Valencia could play an important role.

Oscar Cardozo has left Benfica for Trabzonspor. Always thought he was a good player but despite being heavily linked with a move to one of the big leagues, he stayed 7 years in Portugal.

Valencia is bombproof at this club regardless of how he plays or who the manager is, this is a given.

To be honest that bit makes sense, as they've both played wing back. What doesn't make sense is Ogden saying we want a left back. A) We're not even playing a back four; B) Young has impressed as a left wing back, and Shaw is competing with him, as is James. Why would we buy a fourth player to fight for that spot?

'Van Gaal has been impressed with Young AND Valencia'

:(:(
I wanted them out before, but surely given how useful they've been as wingbacks, you'd want them to stay? We aren't blessed with numbers there, and both can be very useful, young on either side as well. Valencia, even these last few years, has shown the qualities needed in wing backs. Provide width, hold on to the ball and stretch the pitch, along with being a beast physically and being able to run back and forth all day. He's not going to be used as a winger like before, so we won't rely on them for creativity. It's basically using all their strong points, and minimizing their weak points using them in that system.

Nothing of note and maybe even a hint of nonsense from Ogden really.

We've essentially got 3 LWBs if Van Gaal likes James and Young for the role as well as Shaw. (what @#07 said)
We've also got 3 players to compete on the right too Rafa, Tony and Young (again).

We really don't need any wing backs, let alone one specifically for the left. (a right sided one I would like myself).

He's been impressed with Keane, and Blackett, but wants to buy a more experienced CB, fair enough but we've got 5 if they're being brought into the squad. Jones, Smalling, Evans, Blackett, and Keane. Do we really need another CB? Shaw could also play left sided CB with Young or James for the wingback role if needed.

I think if we're buying a new CB, it has to be a serious name. (certainly not Vermaelen).

What do I think we need to buy? 1 RWB (Cuadrado?), 1 Midfielder (Vidal?), and that's about it. I'd love a CB if it's Hummels (doubt it highly!).

Probably because Young is not a left wing back and never will be, it's alright looking fairly competent there in a friendly match where you are playing out of your skin to avoid the manager selling you but the hustle and bustle of the Prem is something else. James is vastly inexperienced and should not be relied upon. And I assume it'll be to switch to a 4-3-3 when this 3-5-2 gets worked out I assume.

His days at the top level are long gone, surprised Benfica even got €5m for him, lucky to get anything.

This is old news. LvG said this in his last press meeting.

There is a bit more meat on the bones in this article about which positions LvG wants to fill before the end of the window,& tbf to Ogden he tends not say anything in detail unless he has been told something, hence recent non stories, so guess he has with regard to players on the way out, and positions we want to fill.

Young tbf to him has impressed on the tour, however I still have massive reservations about whether he will carry on this form whrn it matters, or shrink back into his shell like he usually does when the going gets tough. As for Valencia, he's been his usual waste of space self. Offers nothing going forward, apart from turning back or smashing it against the defenders legs, and is pretty crap defensively. Gets pulled out of position, doesn't track runners, concedes cheap corners etc etc. Everytime I watch him, a piece of my soul dies.

The same article claims that Young and James have impressed Van Gaal though. Surely there's some logical contradictions here. How can Ogden say Young, who sat next to Van Gaal in his presser yesterday, has impressed Van Gaal (likewise James) but in the next say he wants to replace them? That's totally incoherent. If he said Van Gaal hasn't been impressed it'd make more sense but the article right now is just a mish mash of contradictions.

I like the part where he said Van Gaal is looking for another CM. No mention of any specific players. None.
Clueless these days. Anyone who watched our games on tour could have cobbled that article together. Even then the stuff about needing a new left back is muck when he later says Young/James have impressed.

Turn back Tony.

Turkish clubs have this tendency to pull off transfers no one would think they were capable of. Cardozo is 31 and should be playing in a big league now if he were ever going to, his prime was probably around the previous World Cup.

Don't think he's been poor at all. He's been solid, I can't even really remember the opposition ever getting through us down that side really. Going forward he's offered us width, and he's ran on the ball well, got a few assists in the first game and made chances in others. Obviously he could improve on his crossing, but saying he's been his usual shit self isn't true.

The thing with both him and Young, is I'm sure they'd be back to putting in shit and annoying performances if they played as wingers in a 4-2-3-1 or whatever. They aren't great at beating men 1 on 1, they aren't flashy players, and they usually play defensively. As wing backs in our current system, they don't need to have the qualities that they lack, they need the hard work, the defensive skill, they need to stay wide to stretch the pitch and just be smart on the ball and keep play ticking along, of which they are both good at. So while I wouldn't expect them to turn into excellent players or anything, they can both be solid and useful players to have.

selling Kagawa and Hernadez makes absolutely zero sense.
Why? Mata will play pretty much every game when fit and Januzaj should be his understudy. Strikers need to be good all round footballers in this system and Hernandez just isn't that.

We won't miss either and selling them makes room for the hugely talented Januzaj and Wilson.

Even though i like Nani i think it's time for him to go.

and i dont know how can one be impressed with Valencia.
It does make sense though. I'm a huge fan of both of them, but Hernandez is 4th choice striker, and Kagawa will be a bench player for as long as he's here behind Mata. It sucks, as he's an excellent player, but he's not going to be first choice. Neither will Hernandez ahead of Rooney, Van Persie, and Welbeck. Then we also have Januzaj who can play in either position, Wilson as a youngster who will want to make a few appearances at least, etc.. Kagawa can be a really useful squad player for us and you can't ask for a better back up, but he'll want to be starting somewhere at a top club, not back up, especially being 25 after his last season.
Maybe if we had European football it would make sense, but we don't. We'll be playing once a week, with only the odd midweek game for domestic cup games or what not. We just won't be rotating nearly as much so won't need a big squad.

This is how I see it too.

Signing him would be underwhelming, but we have to trust Van Gaal's decisions. It's obvious that he rates him and wants him for the LCB position. Besides, it'd be great to sign Arsenal's captain for a second time :p

He's not that great, but if he gets over his injury problems (unlikely) and gets back to form, he would be an improvement on our current options along with giving Van Gaal a ball playing left footed defender like he wanted, and more depth at the back.

£25m for a £20m striker and a £20m playmaker, ha ha ha.

feck off. Would rather we keep them even with limited opportunities than be made to look like absolute fecking mugs in the transfer market. Woodward's already done the damage on our image when it comes to buying, we don't need to start looking weak when it comes to selling too.

Arsene will push Vermaelen towards Barca to try and avoid the potential embarrassment if he regains form at United.

Vermaelen having the choice of Barcelona and Manchester United after the last 24 months he's had is ridiculous.

Ogden's article reads like he hasn't seen the system we've been playing on tour. Weird, given he has been there the whole time.
