Arsene will push Vermaelen towards Barca to try and avoid the potential embarrassment if he regains form at United.

With some of the transfers Arsenal have sanction in last few years, RvP, Nasri, Clichy etc, I think this is one the Arsenal fans won't be that bothered about, so if he prefers United I'm sure he'll be allowed to join.

I'm hoping we sign Vermaelen. He might not be the most desirable signing but I think he could be perfect for the left side of a back three. Good on the ball, good passer and likes to bring the ball out of defence. Plus, if he opts for Barca, we're surely running out of options.

His girlfriend is a British TV presenter who'd probably want to stay in the UK. Plus we could offer more wages then Barca.

Barca can offer a much nicer place to live, the chance to play (and contend for) Champions League, the chance to play with Messi et al and I don't see why they'd be unable to compete with us on wages.

In a straight choice between us and Barca we lose most times tbh, doubly so when we aren't even in Europe.

IMO he's that good. His positioning is far from great for CB. We can do much better.

when he first went Arsenal he was great, and was given the captains armband for a reason, a top player, and a leader, his injuries have knocked him for six, and if we can sort that out we are in business, but like i said it's a big if.

Fact he was holidaying with RVP is probably a bit of a hint.

That simply isn't the case. People raved about his quality in the ball and goal scoring ability but he's never been anything close to great. He's a defender who's average at defending and positionally absolutely woeful. The injuries are just another nail in the coffin.

People went overboard with him because he scored a few goals and looked good on the ball. He's never been a great defender.

All a matter of opinion I guess, but in absence of any other credible, or get-table options, i'll gladly take our chances with Vermaelen.

To be fair, I think from all the Belgian central defenders that left Ajax in the last few years (Vertonghen,Vermaelen,Alderweireld), Vermaelen looked the most talented. If he sorts out his injury problems, he would be an excellent addition. It's just the fact he is so injury prone which makes me quite reluctant to see him in a United shirt. We already have 3 injury prone defenders in Evans,Jones,Smalling. Adding another one would make little sense. I won't be disappointed if he joins as I believe he'll prove people wrong ability wise but his injuries are a far greater concern and we should seriously consider other options before going in for Vermaelen.

Then again, best case scenario : Vermaelen,Vidal,Herrera,Shaw would be a very decent window for us. Add to that a RWB and it would be close to perfect. I left out Hummels as I think the chances of us getting him are close to nonexistent.

Which is?

Giggs wants the managers job
Giggs fell out with Moyes very early into his reign as manager
Giggs had an agenda all last season against Moyes
Giggs is not to be trusted.

As I said, it's nothing new. Was in the vast majority of the fanzines last year, with "insider" stories....And as I said, a lot of it appeared to be true

Just read his tweets on Giggs, they're hardly nasty. I personally would like us to have a clean break from the whole class of 92 thing. Giggs taking over in a few years scares the shit out of me.

Not sure I fully agree, especially the way this guy put it.

Hmmm perhaps.

But, it was widely reported last year that Giggs didn't show for certain meetings and went telling tales...

It is all hear say at the end of the day. We'll never know exactly what went on. I did however, find the whole "we need to find Giggs a role" craic a bit strange towards the end of the season. But that's just me personally

Vermaelen a leader?

Just because he has the armband doesn't automatically make him a great leader, Fabregas and Gallas have both worn the armband for us and I wouldn't call either of them leaders.

Wenger's never made a big fuss about the captaincy so don't take that as a sign of Vermaelen's leadership qualities. His head was one of the first to drop when things got tough for us over the course of a season. I would probably pick Mertesacker, Flamini, Ramsey and Arteta all ahead of Vermaelen when it comes to leadership qualities.

You guys may be getting a good defender but that is about it.

"Giggsy said he wanted me to be his number 1 defender if he was kept on as manager" - Rio Ferdinand

Scary shit altogether

Exactly. I can't even comprehend how mental that would have been.

LVG has already shown in his short time exactly what is needed. I have a horrible horrible feeling in the back of my mind that he'll sort us out, get us back to where we belong, then Giggs will take over and it will all go to pot again. And it will be a whole lot harder to sack Giggs then it was to sack Moyes.

Young tbf to him has impressed on the tour, however I still have massive reservations about whether he will carry on this form whrn it matters, or shrink back into his shell like he usually does when the going gets tough. As for Valencia, he's been his usual waste of space self. Offers nothing going forward, apart from turning back or smashing it against the defenders legs, and is pretty crap defensively. Gets pulled out of position, doesn't track runners, concedes cheap corners etc etc. Everytime I watch him, a piece of my soul dies.
No doubt handy having a player who can do a decent job in a position if needed, but entering competative games there will come a point we'll have Ashley Young having to defend one on one with the likes of Eden Hazard. I can't see how it's a good idea trying to get away with not playing proper defenders.
