I agree.
If he had come in and bought four or five players straight away, the players would have felt that they had no chance , at least he is giving them a chance to impress him
For me ? go for it, see if he can transform the players he has into a team that can at least compete this season , I have no doubts at all that we are going to hammer some teams this season , just for taking the piss last season .

I do think Vidal would make a massive difference to our side , but if Van Gaal gets our players giving anywhere near their best we wont have any problems finishing top four
I cant wait for the season to start .

Dont get me wrong either man - i'd love him us to get the top-class players in that we think would improve us to no end.

I just think that he's already put so much time & effort into the squad the way it is, as if thats what he's gonna work with from now on.

There's not gonna be a spending spree like Ed said, but thats down to LvG. We just gotta deal with it & hope it works out. By which i mean - winning the title.

He's no excuses if he doesnt - given all the funds at his disposal to make that happen & not spending it..

So first they hired Moyes that they expected not to trash money and then LvG that is known for not doing it.
Makes sense the Glazers didnt go for Mourinho in that respect as well didnt it....

Sure and then they ask Woodward to go around making claims that "there is no budget" so they cover all bases and put all blame of no new signings squarely on manager, right?

He did that last year as well and spent feck all. So get off your high horse. In no way do I think those things were the reason they were hired. But it's certainly a positive for the owners that both weren't known for spending huge amounts. Could have played a role, especially in not trying to get Mourinho in the first place.

Behave. Last year Moyes wanted Fabregas but couldn't lure him and wasn't looking to strengthen in other areas. LvG too hasn't totally ruled out signing new players.
Why the reason can't be of hiring a manager who ensures continuity something which would have been in danger if Mourinho would have left in 3 years? Something which happened with Inter? So instead of telling me to get off high horse, mind your own tin foil hat.

 what is it with our players in training?!

I remember the quote last year from Moyes saying how excellent Cleverley was in training. Game time different story all together.

I hope this is just another lets fabricate another 'Man Utd' story as not much else going on that's news worthy.

We thrashed a poor LA and we were just about deserved winners against Roma and Inter. A poor Inter as many have mentioned.

I'm sure I'll get the usual abuse of being spoilt and all that bollocks but LvG will be crazy to think this is a team that will challenge. Squad strength wise it is three or four players out injured away from being very average.

I would say this story is total balls.

Better hope we get thrashed tonight

So LVG tells the press the team is broken and we have to many number 10's but Sky sports/LVG is telling us he is happy with how things are going. What's funny is LVG said Smalling has a small injury and wont play against RM and lets not forget Rafael is at AON getting treated. Rightio.

I'm not saying the hiring of him and LvG was for that reason mainly, but it surely is a positive for the owners.
But we have spent, so that rubbish. We've roughly spent £130 million since Fergie left, that's hardly being tight is it?

Yes... when we signed a promsing midfielder and a young fullback with great potential... oh wait.

I'm referring to Woodward making comments and the club not backing them up.

EDIT: Of course there is a month to go, so we continue to watch the space, however I wish he would keep his mouth shut with regards to transfers to be honest and just let LVG do the talking.

Makes the club look stupid or as if him and LVG are not on the same page

The comments you are referring to are totally unrelated.
"team is broken" - because of disastrous last season..psychologically broken.
"has too many number 10's" - too many players for one particular position, not needed
"happy with how things are going" - players are responding well to his training metohds

So if I am a manager, I can be happy if 4 no. 10s that I have are all are performing well but the headache for me will be how to keep them happy and use all when season starts, especially with no Europe. So even if all might have trained well, he will sell few for everyone's good.

His comment of "may not buy at all" should be taken with pinch of salt. He will be looking to strengthen defense and possibly couple of other areas but only if he gets right players. We won't be seeing a Fellaini like signing just for the sake of it.

Fabregas was never even tempted to come. The whole saga was embarrassing not more.
And the continuity argument is pure bullshit as well. Hire a shit manager because he stays longer? We saw where that leads to. Not like LvG will stay forever is it?
It's just that both are known for not spending big and this could have been a reason as well. Not sure why this is so outrageous when it's pretty clear that the owners will look at that as well.

I'd love to read that mate - just out of curiosity!

Did you not hear about the bids for Ronnie & Bale. Or the last minute desperation £40m bid for Khedira. Thats doesnt strike me as a man with no funds to back it up.

Not to mention well-documented reports of scouting Kroos & Reus (photo's of him cosying up with their mutual agent many times, during 2014), Carvalho & Cavani to name but a few too. And Fergie sittin beside Conte at the Europa Final, which drew the rumour that Vidal or Pogba (or both) might be on the cards..

Moyes was like us muppets on here with a blank cheque, but he didnt get to bring it home because he'd no experience of big money deals & he thankfully got sacked.

He didnt have the right stuff to manage our lads & went so far as to practically destroy the club's footballing mantra & morale, in less than how many months exactly?

He was sacked after 10 months, but the damage was done probably in pre-season - 9 months earlier!

The glazers know they have to spend to get the team successful, or many of the endorsement agreements drop by a 3rd, or they lose some altogether that are on a year by year basis..

Doesn't matter how well the team is doing we don't have the defense for the 14/15 campaign. Smalling has a small injury, Rafael is injured already who's left? Injury prone Evans, Jones and hopefully injury free Shaw.We may be stocked in other positions but our defense is very weak (in numbers).

Have no issues with LVG using SAF mind games about signings but i don't buy into us not buying any more players. We will get 2 defenders and hopefully a CM.

That's rather poor from Sky.

Did anyone here who's going all doom and gloom actually see the presser? This is what happened:

Reporter: " What about new signings. We're close to the start of the premier league. Are you frustrated with lack of signings?" (can't remember the exact words, but it was something along those lines.)

LVG: "No... there's still one entire month. I wanted to give the players I have an honest chance before I make my decision. Maybe we won't sign any players.. *SMILES*"

So what was obvious from that was that he was teasing the journalists. It's not good management to let your existing players who are about to play a match the next day that he's dissatisfied and he's going to splurge in the transfer window. He's only sticking to his word and giving everyone a chance.

So calm down ladies. LVG hasn't ruled out signings emphatically or anything. It's just poor reportage.

Exactly. They have twisted the words for a sensationalist headline. They know it'll generate views.

Things can easily be reported 1 way or another depending on the viewpoint.

Both have spent 120/130 million combined now over the last 11 months plus wages. That's more than double of probably what SAF would have spent net.

Fabregas was never even tempted to come. The whole saga was embarrassing not more.

He clearly wanted to move last summer and even Barca wanted to sell, but then they had to change managers and Martino convinced him talking of more vertical football.

Whether he would have moved to us over other options or not is debateable but he clearly would have given club indications given how we bid in a public chase.

But we have spent, so that rubbish. We've roughly spent £130 million since Fergie left, that's hardly being tight is it?

40 million spent in each of 3 transfer windows roughly. Considering the inflation in prices that's not sth outrageous. But yeah we have spent. ANd I'm not saying we haven't. It's just that both managers were known for working without spending a lot on the market in contrast to managers like Mou so comments like the one from LvG are not unexpected really.

It's not like we haven't spent. Not outrageous amounts of money but I don't disagree that we have. But still LvG's comments shouldnt come by surprise. He is one to work with youth rather than spending big and this could have played a role in his hiring.

How is it poor from Sky?

LvG said we may not sign any more players. Sky reported LvG said we may not sign any more players.

There's nothing sensationalist about it at all unless you're dying to go into a transfer related meltdown.
So leaving out the part of "there is still 1 entire month" isn't forming the words to their liking?. That at the beginning of the sentence makes it completely different.

if you look at the wording them saying he may not is like saying there is a 50-50 chance of more signings. we all know hoe reliable sky have been in the past with us and transfers.

I don't think its possible that we won't buy anyone this summer, we desperately need at least one defender. No doubt we'll buy one. It's just not likely to be hummels and more like Vermaelen.

I think that will most likely be it. And that may not be a bad thing. If we spunk a load of money on players this year, we still won't be able to get the world class players we crave due to no champs league. We should get the players required to get us back into top 4, save the cash for next year when we can attract better players. Otherwise in two years time we may end up with a squad full of good players but not great players we will need to push for title/ecl

I saw the presser and he said maybe we don't need! But to be honest knowing him why would he start spouting off about transfers?!? He just wouldn't! I'm not reading too much into it to be honest. I'll reiterate... If he's said that he's giving the squad a chance he's gotta be seen to do that, plus he said we have a month til the start of the season. I ain't panicking at all!
I agree Red!

Mate alot of us watched this live, the whole presser had an air of jokeyness about it. If you are suggesting he was in any way shape or form serious and not teasing us all then you sir need a strong coffee and a sharp intake of fresh air.

Would love if it was true, neither Nani or Chich would turn down a move to Juv, plus they're worth £25m-30m for the pair. Two of them plus £20m? fine piece of business for both clubs.

I saw the whole thing. We can argue till the dogs come home about what he actually meant. All I'm saying is he wasn't sporting a big grin when he made the statement, like the poster suggested.
