I don't think LvG was overly impressed, he often dropped him in place of Kuyt, and once Verhaegh. He's very weak moving with the ball and didn't look up to much more than Kuyt defensively. His distribution and ball retention skills were seriously weak too, I don't think he's a very good signing in all honesty.

The deals aren't "like for like". I believe Real Madrid are entitled to all profits from shirt sales, with only their base payment being £31m. I imagine United's deal either does not have any profit share agreement (ie Adidas are entitled to all profits) or they have included this figure in the £70m.
