If there's a finite budget, then its fairly unlikely we are going to (or were ever going to) sign £30m+ players for all those positions in the squad.
Our season was such an utter disaster last season that big changes need to be made. I don't think it's naïve to suggest that spending 30m plus each on a left back, a centre half and a central midfielder was within the realms of possibility.

Anyone else slightly concerned that we're being linked with Vermaelen and Blind, both who can play left back, and think this might mean we're not going to sign Luke Shaw after all?

Obviously there's a good chance a lot of this is bullshit but...

Vermaelen wants to leave because he doesn't play at Arsenal. Doesn't make much sense to go to United merely as cover. Personally I don't think either of those you mentioned are good enough, and I don't see what benefit they'd bring other than taking up a place in the squad. Hummels on the other hand would be our only world class defender and could be that for years, with another spot up for grabs beside him and enough cover to deal with injuries.

I understand the logic behind having faith in those we've already got, but I'm struggling to see how signing an average 28 year old centre half helps that. If we want cover, we should sign someone younger with the potential to take over in the future, rather than someone who isn't good enough to start despite being at their peak.

I think Smalling and Jones both have the potential to be similar to Hummels in terms of ability. But I think it's important that young defenders have experienced player's that can be called upon for certain games. Arsenal do not need Vermaelen in this respect as they have Mertesacker and Koscielny. At United he would likely play a similar amount of games and have a similar role to Vidic last season (particularly 15/16 season if we qualify for the CL).

We already have young centre backs with potential to take over in the future, signing another one would be illogical. What we need right now is an experienced player, ideally who isn't going to take time to adapt to the League and someone who will be happy playing 20-25 games a season, whilst also not costing us a fortune. In an ideal world we'd have kept Vidic for another couple of seasons for this role, but a player like Vermaelen wouldn't be a huge downgrade in my opinion (to the Vidic of the last 2 seasons).

Or we're purposely leaking stories as to allude Southampton to the fact we won't be held ransom for a teenager.

All of his "potential to take over in the future" stuff is becoming more and more unimportant. In theory it sounds great, but there comes a point when you need to give that younger player a genuine opportunity, otherwise they are pulled to pieces for a lack of progression, even though the reason for it is staring them in the face.

There's absolutely no point whatsoever spending good money on a young talent, ensuring he doesn't get the game time he needs, then starting the premise all over again. It looks noble, but it's really just a waste of both their time and yours. With Vermaelen, at least there exists the opportunity to use him as an experienced squad player while putting full faith in what you have.

No. An alternative to a priority position that needs strengthening isn't going to be someone who can 'do a job there' Blind is average at left back, as is Vermaelen. If we were going to be looking at alternatives to Shaw it'd be a natural left back.

Blind is a natural fullback. He only switched to midfield mid season.

He's better in midfield though, he doesn't have the pace to play left back with 4 at the back and he isn't that solid defensively. He was getting booed at Ajax when he was playing left back for being shite, admittedly he has improved since then in that position but it still isn't his best.

Well considering the fact that LVG switched to 5-3-2 because he didnt have someone like Strootman for the 4-3-3.. He might do it with us too if dont get in a CM like Strootman.. LVG was the first to admit he used the 5-3-2 because he felt his team weren't strong enough in midfield to win with a 4-3-3, as is the case with our present midfield too..

I can understand changing formation for international football because you're limited to who you can play. I think a 3 man central defence with wing backs would be defensive overkill for at least half the matches we'll play next season, especially with no European football. I'd hope LVG will keep 4 at the back and invest more in the quality of our midfield.

The Alexis Sanchez and Liverpool stuff around Europe today is all from The Metro, make of that what you will.

On the Thomas Vermaelen (sp?) rumours, wouldn't that indicate we're going to be playing 5-3-2/3-5-2 next season?

Jones - Smalling - Evans with Vermaelen and Keane for subs perhaps?

Why would it? We'd still need to sign a centre half if we play 4 at the back.

Think we'd be very low on cover if one of the starting three were injured. We struggled to put out two fit defenders from 5 available with Vidic and Rio.

Sure mate.

You're a twat, mate.

I don't really see how Vermaelen is more suited to that 3/5 defence than any other CB. If, and that's a big if, we were to ever play that system, you want your wing-backs to be very attacking-minded and dangerous. Vermaelen can do a shift at LB in a 4-4-2 but not as an attacking wing-back who needs to provide the width and the crosses.

I meant as a left sided CB to fill in when the the LB/LM is caught high up the pitch.

What the feck is your problem ? Silly name calling ,Are u 16 ? What happened to no personal insults ? If being in the mains for long gets you special privlages of no infractions or bannings for such posts then well done.

I'm not sure we should sign Shaw...thirty million plus the rumoured wage packet is a lot of cash for a young player. Hubris, et cetera, et certera, yada yada.

If Liverpool sign Sanchez I will personally drive to Old Trafford and wait for Woodward to appear and then pursue to stick a rusty bread knife into the useless cnuts eye.
I actually hate him as much as Moyes. He isn't going to deliver is he

 As much I would like that, I can't see Sanchez signing for Liverpool. The thought of it made me laugh out loud, similar to when they were linked with Fabregas.

He could easily pick CL football though couldn't he. I have 0% trust in Ed. He's good at making money but utter shite at spending

Nope. The only deals we secure will be as a direct result of LVG convincing the player. Woodward is very much to blame for last season's transfer fiasco and I am sure time will prove him useless in the market.

Surely he will have to go if he fails this time, we are miles behind and it's up to him to get us back to where we belong

He appears to have the knack of making money for us, which has been his saving grace with the board. I also reckon he is a man no manager could trust. Just look at that face!

How's about we reserve judgement on this summer's business until the window actually closes?

Last summer was a cluster-feck but it's impossible to know how to apportion the blame between Woodward and Moyes. A repeat performance and Ed's head is on the block but we're several weeks away from coming to that conclusion.

If Liveprool get Sanchez their first XI is officially better than ours, if it wasn't already.

Our squad still edges it, just.
Suarez - Sturridge - Sanchez or even if Suarez leaves; Sterling - Sturridge - Sanchez. That is one hot front three.
Sanchez - van Persie - Januzaj would be better, though. ;)

I don't think he's up to it personally but he can only go after the players van gaal tells him to. Sanchez might not be one of them.

I think we were expressing our lack of confidence in Woodward, not in whether we do business or not. Regardless of who we end up with this summer, I can't help but wonder who we missed out on because of our village idiot. (my opinion of course)

Tom Ince has opened talks with Queens Park Rangers over a move to Loftus Road. Ince is out of contract at Blackpool and seems set to leave the club.

    Rejecting Inter for QPR.

Was wondering whether Tom was educated in Italy at all only to discover that he was 5 when Daddy returned to play for the scum. This makes me feel old.

I've seen one or two people claim Inter had no genuine interest and were trying to help out his dad by creating a bit of buzz around him. He didn't pull up any trees at Palace, though admittedly Tony Pulis - the only manager in the world who buys so many attacking players and yet never plays them - might have had something to do with that.

What was the point in your shitty sarcastic remark? Especially as you came out with it because you didn't have a proper reply.

I think the Shaw deal is done regardless of who the next manager is btw. Koeman or whoever wont have a say.
