Any theories why the United twitter is locked? Surely it means Ronnie is coming home in some way.

Ok then Azpelecueta at LB and Ivanovic at RB. Results are the same only the order shuffles around a bit, maybe moreso in United's favour.

Rafael = Ivanovic (I know loads of people don't rate Rafael but he's one of the best young RBs in the world. Just one season ago he was voted into the team of the season and was arguably the best RB in the league alongwith Zabaleta. Van Gaal manages injuries really well and Rafael will definitely bounce back to his 2012/ 2013 form).

Shaw = Azpilicueta (Again this is not a unanimous view but Shaw was the premier LB in the league in 2013/ 2014. Even though I felt Azpilicueta was a bit better overall but Shaw really come on in the 2nd half of the season).

The point remains that our front 4 is probably the strongest in the league alongwith City's. Rooney, RVP, Mata, Januzaj, Kagawa is a combination most managers would kill for. The CM while not the strongest in the world is much improved with Herrera's arrival. I think Carrick has a couple of good seasons in him, his struggles last season were in large part due to the tactics. We do have some issues in defence admittedly I'll concede that much. But overall the team is in no way "too far behind Chelsea". We've already sealed our most important transfer in Van Gaal and he'll get the best out of the players unlike the previous manager.

Would I like us to strengthen further ? Of course we could do with some added quality. But even if we sign no-one of note henceforth we'll easily be there or thereabouts come the end next season. You only need to look at Liverpool to see what a solidified system can do despite a supposedly weaker defence.
I never suggested we are far off of competing against the Premier Leagues elite, I just find it a silly way of comparing two sides.

It doesn't take into consideration form, injuries, balance or cohesion, it's merely pitting one player against another, despite the fact that individuals' style of play or role in the team could be significantly different to the player they are compared with.

Personally, I find our areas of weakness more substantial than that of City's or Chelsea's. It's undeniable that we possess a wealth of quality - particularly in attacking positions - at our disposal that are a match for any Premier League side, but our central midfield options prior to Herrera's arrival were simply abysmal and our centre backs have either stagnated in progression or suffer an inordinate amount of injuries.

It's likely those apparent deficiencies that stand out a mile to opposition fans or even some of our own teams fans cloud their judgement when assessing our team, especially when Chelsea and City have rectified pretty much all of their areas of weakness already. We need to strengthen still and it would be very disappointing if Shaw and Herrera were the last of our summer business. It's a bit of a redundant point comparing individuals however. One thing I expect is for United to perform better than the sum of it parts with van Gaal in charge.

Do I think we can compete for the title? Who knows, but the objective is to secure Champions League qualification next season and anything else is a bonus. A signing like Vidal and a quality defender could elevate us to title challengers, but if not, I expect us to be embroiled in the fight for top four along with Liverpool and Arsenal.

We both have a player we don't want to sell. How about we compromise and they swap us Vidal for Nani and we keep Evra.

Knew this is what he said. He said if Madrid do buy James then he'd expect Di Maria to leave and United to be interested.

This leads to quotes going round saying he ''expects Di Maria to sign for United'' as though he has information of a deal about to be done. When actually he is only considering the far from likely scenario that Madrid buy Rodriguez and sell Di Maria. Silly season is in full flow.

Van Gaal's head has blatantly been edited onto Moyes's body in the banner.

Even more so the reason I took exception with the statement of United being "too far behind Chelsea". As you say there are a multitude of intangibles that go beyond just squad strength. Might be wrong here but I genuinely believe we'll challenge for the title next season and not just set the bar too low by aiming for CL qualification. Again you're correct in the sense that everything above and beyond that will be a bonus. But Van Gaal is a winner and he's not accustomed to settling. I expect that mentality to rub off on our players. I'm just saturated with hearing the common narrative of our players being subpar or deficient compared to our rivals. It's not a perfect squad but they seldom are.
