Atletico apparently spending 20m Euros on Benfica's goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Must rate him quite highly cos Atletico usually don't spend much. Has anyone watched him play?

Its withdrawal is expected to clear the way for the club to sign a lucrative new deal with German sportswear company Adidas.
The article says Nike have made big inroads into Adidas' market share. Would make sense for the deal to be worth more to Adidas if so.

That's a lot of money assuming its true. Rather buy a CB and a CM.
I think it's all a bit complicated, I mean do we spend big chunk of our transfer on a midfielder Vidal/Pogba OR we sign someone like Di Maria/Sanchez to add to our attacking unit. I would like to sort our midfield with a top signing rather then add to our attack. Unless we going after young players which we fans don't know of and sign some young midfielder/CB and winger.

Can't see us splurging big cash on two areas anymore. There is one more big signing left at best. If we get some one like Di Maria then chances are our CM/CB option will be much cheaper.

What makes you say we won't buy those too?
I assume he means "let's get a CB and CM in first to calm anxious fans"
I agree with him. We do have pressing matters... on the other hand if a player like Di Maria becomes available it does kind of throw a spanner in the works

Even more so the reason I took exception with the statement of United being "too far behind Chelsea". As you say there are a multitude of intangibles that go beyond just squad strength. Might be wrong here but I genuinely believe we'll challenge for the title next season and not just set the bar too low by aiming for CL qualification. Again you're correct in the sense that everything above and beyond that will be a bonus. But Van Gaal is a winner and he's not accustomed to settling. I expect that mentality to rub off on our players. I'm just saturated with hearing the common narrative of our players being subpar or deficient compared to our rivals. It's not a perfect squad but they seldom are.
There are reasons to suggest we could put in a sustained title challenge, so I hope your belief is founded. We have a number of factors in our favour which you've quite rightly pointed out. We now have a competent manager who is accustomed to winning and Liverpool demonstrated the positive implications of missing out on European football last season with a title challenge.

However, breaking into the top four can be a difficult enough task, especially when those competitors are showing continual signs of improvement. You would expect City and Chelsea to be absolute shoe-ins for top four, that much is a certainty and if Arsenal can add a higher calibre of player like the ones they are starting to be seriously linked with, their place is unlikely to come under pressure.

It's Liverpool that look the team likely to miss out, out of the current top four participants so far. Even though van Gaal will restore the mentality and winning culture the club is associated with, I think a sense of realism is needed. Top four is vital and could be challenging enough as it is, let alone winning the league.

I'll be sad to see Nike go after they helped us bring Ronaldo back all those times.

One thing is certain. If Woodward is targeting a marquee, luxury signing, it should be a wide player like di Maria or Sanchez and not Cavani. It is an area we will need to address sooner rather than later and it would be a far more beneficial signing than if Ed was to pursue Cavani like a lot of outlets still report.

A centre back and central midfielder are key though. Probably the only 'critical areas' in our squad that definitely have to be addressed this summer. You could make a case for a wide player and right back being needed, but that could probably wait.

The thing I like about Nike is that they make very sleek looking kits. Adidas kits are all quite similar with the trim down the arms. However Adidas are also quite good.

Help me, Adidas. You're my only hope.

I'm 100% sure that Adidas will get the deal. Adidas is in an eternal battle for global domination with Nike. There's no bigger prize in the world of football than Manchester United.

Warrior, of course, is trying it's very best to break into the Europe. That said, We would prefer Adidas over Warrior simply because we've had a history with them, and we've seen just how terrible Warrior kits can be!

I don't know much about formations, I think Wellbeck/januzaj and Valencia/Kagawa as backup can be a decent option for the wings. Not world class but they can be effective. So yeah I agree with you, hopefully we will sort the midfield issue first.

Woodward would prefer the brand splashing the most cash.

I think Nike are the premium brand, maybe It's just me but I've always seen them as the leading sports brand ever since I was a kid. Adidas are a close second, anything else will be terrible for us.

Or maybe we are going big on Di Maria instead of a super midfield signing.

I guess Tom agrees with us.

It's a big blow for Nike. Arsenal are now with Puma, Liverpool with Warrior, Chelsea with Adidas and we'll be with another brand soon.

Nike's biggest client in England is City, who (I'm guessing...) sell nowhere near as many shirts as the above clubs.

Is Fila still about?

Nike still have Barcelona and PSG too, I wouldn't be too worried for them.

I hope we keep Nike.

Tough, we're not. :D

Well we have attacking players who can thrive in a wing position in the right system like Kagawa on the left of a fluid, interchanging three or Welbeck as a left wide-forward. I still think we could do with another pacy and penetrative winger however, as that was sorely lacking last season and all of our wingers besides Januzaj are more or less useless.

I suppose that's likely. Both Vidal and di Maria would equate to around £80M, so it's probably a pipe dream. Perhaps if we don't have the funds for this window or are prioritise other positions a wide player can wait until January/next summer. Looking at our current wide options, we already have raw or poor players and immediate injection of quality into the first team would be ideal.

And in Portugal Porto's gone to Warrior from Nike. They seem to be losing quite a lot of deals

Adidas please!

Classic brand, love the 3 stripes - their kits are always so simple and classy (well, a lot of the time anyway).

Nike are poo these days.

That sucks. Money aside, Nike is better for the Manchester United brand.

How so ?

If United drops Nike, their only high end clientèle will be Barcelona, PSG, Inter and City. Two of them are relatively new to the European elite with smallish global standing. They've already lost three of their big sellers - Arsenal, Juventus and Sporting.

Adidas meanwhile have Madrid, Juventus, Milan, Bayern, Chelsea, Ajax, Benfica and potentially United on their books and all of them are clubs with a rich footballing history.

A lot of highly marketable players are leaving Nike too. Ozil, Torres, Mata, Nani.. Aguero and Messi back in the day...
