We played 7 defenders that match iirc, crazy as hell and it was probably the best match I've seen from both da Silva brothers, some telepatic shit.

It was great. I remember the shock when that line-up was announced. In all fairness though, it was probably a complete fluke, we've put out similar against Blackburn Rovers and been played off the park.

It would though. They're bringing in young players that are going to surpass Schweinsteiger very soon. You tell me who is in a better position.

Due to a horrendous managerial appointment that we all knew was destined to fail from the outset we find ourselves in a terrible position to begin with. Short term fixes are necessary, longer term options can be revisited once we are in a position to obtain these kind of players - albeit I don't really understand who these players exactly are.

Seems incredibly risky (stupid?) that we're seemingly pinning so much on Strootman recovering from his injury and being the same player he was prior and Roma willing to sell him... which would still leave us with our current lot of shit plus perhaps Schweinsteiger until January, when an unfit Strootman theoretically arrives and maybe plays himself into form by March. We can't afford to write off this season, and that plan seems like that's what we're doing.

Schweinsteiger is a lot better than we have though.
We're not talking slightly better, like Fellaini apparently was (see last year' thread), we're talking a lot better. And we need a lot better

I only slept for an hour last night. Then produced that rant. I've also been on fire at work today. People are looking at me like an oracle of wisdom and authority. Sleep deprivation has helped me unlock the best version of myself. Maybe it's because I'm less inclined to give a feck about people's sensibilities?

Or maybe I'm actually making a fool of myself and I won't know it until I get a proper night's sleep and come back to the office. Whichever it is, it feels real right now, so I'm gonna live today like my shit don't stink.

Nope you're just sharp.

You've got to factor in his injuries last season though. At a time when it needs to be spot on in the transfer department, it seems a bit of a risk.

Who? Fabregas? Gerrard? Toure? They're all late 20's or early 30's, none are young players. Only Ramsey you could say is a young promising midfielder but he's not in schweinsteigers class. I agree we need one of those, but we also need an experienced head and already world class like schweinsteiger as we've lost quite a bit of that last summer. I don't think anybody is saying finish spending there, but it would be a great start.

I can see what @pocco's saying though.
Come three years we could be getting the run around by Bayern again with Schweinsteiger here and Bayern with a younger, more able player (who we partly funded, and we possibly could have gone for instead). And we'll be sitting here wondering how the heck we're still behind them.

He'd be an improvement without doubt. But you've got to feel a little worried whenever a team is willing to let a legend go to another top team. It's not always bad news (Pirlo) but I think we really need to make these next two midfield signings (whenever they come) count.

A player with something to prove and before/in their prime would be ideal (even with the added cost). But if we end up with Schweinsteiger for £15 million come August, it'll still be an upgrade for this crucial season.

You're falling into the trap of thinking signing him would bring back success. Or it seems you are.

Exactly. It's just the sort of forward planning I've been used to under Fergie. No quick fixes.

But you're also falling into the trap of thinking everything should be the same as it was under Fergie. He got the best out of a squad with a mixture of world class and average players. His long term planning saw us not sign the world class midfielders we needed.

We're at a time where we could see ourselves fall behind if We don't drastically make some changes. I would happily take a short term fix right now if it means we get ourselves back into the champions league and then allow ourselves to rebuild as necessary.

I don't think there's anyone better out there that's gettable who isn't one though.

I don't think we need to worry about matching the likes of Bayern any time soon, we need to get ourselves matching the top teams here.

"Bringing back success," at the heart of it, requires good players and a manager to bring them together. I think we certainly have the former, I'm hopeful on the latter, and players like Schweinstieger will go a long way in improving the squad as it stands. It isn't rocket science, all of this.

Long term planning isn't all that. Over the past few years, Ferguson did nothing but take the piss out of his supposed long term sanctions, and yet now many supporters stand, claiming they're not good enough for the club yet fail to ponder why.

Wait for the "Robben to United" rumours to go into hyper-drive now.
I hope so. He may have just been promoted to my favourite player after that performance. I'm all for Louis bring Robben and Robin together if thats the results they produce.

Agreed. He is world class.

Another journo understanding we have other priorities but doesn't know what those plans are. Ok cool.

For a local paper, the MEN are pretty dire when it comes to stuff like this. The more reliable British journalists and De Telegraaf in Holland seem to think Schweinsteiger is a target so I'm inclined to believe them. Time will tell anyway. To be honest, it seems most of them still haven't a clue at the moment who we're after.

Well who are these players??!!!

The full list according to the gallery:

Kroos
Mangala
Garay
Cavani
Griezmann
Strootman
Wijnaldum
Shaquiri
Marchisio
Pogba
Shaw
Barkley
Lukaku
Meyer
Carvalho
Berahino
Bakkali
Fischer
Hughes
Florian Thauvin
Gerard Deulofeu

Pretty much everyone but Schweinsteiger. Short list huh?

Van Persie showed this evening just why he should be our main striker next season. Another reason why I can't see Rooney fitting into Van Gaal's system.

Strootman returns on October so he'll theoretically will be on form on January. If we sign him, I think we'll sign him on that window, not now.

However we need another midfielder now, and if we can get Schwein then it will be brilliant.

What the hell, the media has been bloody annoying this summer.. It's like they are all plotting, few of em get our hopes up, and then a few days later the rest come out denying any interest from our side!

We've been through this already, it's only a bloody ACL op. It's really not that big a deal. It was a successful op it's not like Hargreaves tendenitis or Kings non existent cartelidge. It's a serious operation but it's very straightforward these days and it was said to be a great success.
