I honestly don't see anything special in him, even at Palace I can see him reaching the level of Ashley Young when he was at Villa. At the end of the day had we signed one of Moura or Hazard we would have never of signed him, that was our awful transfer policy scrapping the bottom of the barrel rather than getting the best young talents.

I can only assume your taking the piss. Zaha was exceptional at Palace and even got capped with England to secure his nationality. To suggest he was bottom of the barrel is hard to figure out. Yep Hazzard was better and so was Moura but they were also double even treble the price. We missed out and took a gamble to shine a rough diamond hopefully LVG can do this.

We've had that transfer policy for years and it's put us in pretty good stead. Hazard/Moura wouldn't have got in the way of us adding the likes of Zaha to our squad much in the same way buying Smalling didn't stop us buying Jones or having van Persie/Rooney/Welbeck/Hernandez didn't stop us buying Henriquez. You'd probably think differently if we obtained Bale or Ramsey but you win some, you lose some. Hindsight is great though and Zaha still has time on his side despite a bad start.
Honestly our transfer policy has failed us since 2009. Other than Van Persie, De Gea and Valencia to an extent who else can you call a success? To many gambles on unknown young players like Bebe, Obertan rather than going out and buy the end product or splashing that little bit of extra cash and getting the best.

Am I the only one who wouldn't mind the signing of Vermaelen? Yeah hes not a superstar but he's a decent player and hes experienced. To me it would indicate that LVG is putting faith in Evans, Smalling and Jones and we would likely see a combination of those 3 becoming our permanent defensive partnership, I see nothing wrong with that.

Big difference between the premier league and the Championship. They might have been double the price but they were much better players. Hazard is now the best wide player in the premier league while Zaha could barely get a start for Cardiff.

Wow, one reporter from the MEN reckons we won't sign a winger and everyone loses their heads

LvG knows what he is doing, we are talking about a manager who has taken an average Dutch side to the verge of a WC semi. He is also renowned for working with youth and bringing them on, so I would expect to see more of Lingard and Zaha next season. For all we know he could be playing 3-5-2 in which case the need for wingers in the truest sense is less urgent.

The most likely truth is the MEN and other reporters know the sum total of feck all about our plans and are just filling the pages

I don't think you can say our policy has failed us since 2009 when you consider our success during that time period - the policy worked for Ferguson, unfortunately there was a big change and it was put in the hands of a massively inept manager. He had the chance to sign players and royally messed up. You may see it as a bad thing that SAF didn't leave a better squad for Moyes but then signings like Zaha were an attempt at that, maybe it was a good thing that SAF allowed Moyes to spend more of the money creating the team that he wanted instead of having it picked by Sir Alex.

I still think Moyes fecked us in the transfer market a lot more than people think. He took a team that was in transition and decided to do nothing with it while everyone else made moves.

When a BBC reporter and a Times journalist come out with pretty much the same story it's obviously a leak from somewhere.

Juventus are nuts if they are actually wanting to sell Vidal? Why in the hell would they want to sell Vidal and the figures quoted for him as are even more shocking.

But what the hell, I hope Juventus are actually nuts and sell us Vidal for 35 mil Pounds.
Juve have 2 other young prospects n midfield they want to bring through. They will use the money to add to their attack whilst keeping Pogba for a few more seasons in which they hope they will get a mega auction for him.

Maths isn't your strong suit is it?

I had assumed you were including the MEN story as well seeing as it is what sparked the whole debate. 2+1=3. See if mummy will do you some.weetabix and come back in a better mood yeah?

We'd need 3 fit CB's to play 3-5-2... best of luck with that one Louis :)

The only reason he's playin 3-5-2 is because Strootman was out of the WC was it not?

Unless i'm mistaken - he'd be playin 4-3-3 otherwise?

I don't think either of them mean we'll sign a midfielder and centre back and then stop. I suspect that just the absolute minimum.

The one from Mike Keegan that started this whole debate

No I agree it was more a point that there are only 2 people who know what formations we'll be using and what players we are chasing and unless I've missed some big news neither of them post here or work for a paper :)

Thats pretty depressing.

As much as its been a good start to the window, if we don't follow it up with a few more big signings, then it'll just be another let down.

Eh?

Signed 2 players where the obvious gaps were. Even if we finished at that I'd be happy.

However, I'm hoping for a cb and another cm, in line with Keegans tweet.

We have good attacking options, RVP will be like a new player, we have some good youngsters coming through. We will be challenging. There's no doubt about that

Why is it that anything positive about United is either written off as rumour or everyone wants hard evidence before they even consider beleiving whereas anything negative is immediately taken as gospel?

We like moaning. It's fun.

Oh, i understood what you were saying man, i was just running over the potential for this 3-5-2 formation etc..

...and i've come to the same conclusions as you - nobody has a friggin clue what to expect or who we'll sign..

...apart from this fella maybe:

Indeed. It's typical of this place, as is wanting to believe every other bit if positive news about players going to other clubs, despite the fact that 99% if what's said in Twitter or in the papers is rubbish.

The reality is the Herrera deal and the way it was done suggests that the club are keeping things under wraps and going about their business quietly, rather than broadcasting it in the press.

People need to be patient, and realise the reality that transfers don't happen in a day, and also realise that a lot if players are still at the World Cup or on holiday having played in it, not to mention the manager being there.

André Villas-Boas on Garay: "I've always liked him. I wanted him back in January, and I'm glad we finally signed this fantastic footballer."

I think it makes more sense if we spread our budget over coming transfer windows. I mean let's try to look at bigger picture here, as long as we finish top 4 with few signings (2 more) then I think we will be back on right track. We can always add to our squad next summer or January transfer window. Van gaal can asses our current first team and youth players, who knows he might promote few from youth set up and surprise us all. He has done it in past. There is no quick fix, we are not Madrid/city etc...

Signing too many players usually results in a bad season. SAF had it when he first came to United, as did Spurs last year.

Is it just me or is there something weird happening with the font?

I forgot that AVB went to Zenit. It still feels like he's Spurs manager for some daft reason.

It's gone very quite for us lately, hopefully we are working on a Vidal bid.

I'm really annoyed that we don't seem to be in for Alexis Sanchez though, he's a quality player that would significantly improve our attacking power on the wings and he's available for a reasonable price with only Arsenal and maybe Juventus rumoured to be interested, we should be in for him.

Echo: Southampton are edging closer to securing Feyenoord striker Graziano Pelle and FC Twente midfielder Dusan Tadic. (1/2)
(2/2) Saints raised their offer for Pelle to £6.4m (€8m) and agreement is close while Tadic will cost them around £9m (€11.3m).

And it is likely we'll have four new players in our starting 11 next season, so it's crucial they are all signed before pre season.

Interesting the stark contrast between a manager who has the belief and confidence of his players and has them playing for him and for each other compared to a manager who didn't have the confidence, belief or respect of his players in making statements like this.
