Nope, I just think people have been reading too much into Van Gaal mentioning him.

Agreed. I think he was using them as examples to make a point as we were facing Real next. If we were facing Chelsea he might have mentioned Hazard and Schurrle/Willian.

After that he may have committed to the 3-5-2 and looking for players to make that work instead. And anyway for the outlay Di Maria commands it still won't solve our main problem area and i doubt very much we have 200 million pounds to spend.

He was quite clearly far from fully fit, and even in the last week was supposedly applying ice to it, which this long after the operation is not normal.

Knees are fiddly as feck, could be a huge risk.

I'm no doctor but I can agree with this 100% I fecked my knees from years of skateboarding and roller hockey, was told by my doctor to give them up or risk not walking later in life. Then became a fisherman (only for money) and fecked them even more. But my sister has serious knee problems and has had 9 ops on her left knee and 17 on her right! After hearing some of her consultations with top GP's and surgeons I can understand why the knee problem might be the factor. I doubt Vidal has the problems she does, but knees are a massive problem area as there is so many parts of a knee than can have damage, and moving parts at that. Certainly nothing like a straight break or fracture or muscle/ligament injury.

As you said, Ice on the knee, however precautionary, after this length of time is really not a good sign.

It's often said that the human knee is one of evolution's great botches. If people hadn't started out eating bananas and swinging from trees but had been upright walkers from day 1, Nature would have chosen a completely different design.

Without doubt my biggest muppet saga ever.

Surely not? Don't you remember the Thiago saga last summer? That was true transfer muppetry - the signed match ball by De Gea from the Euros is a moment unmatched by anything before or since.

Thing is that the Thiago saga was over mid July wasn't it? With Vidal it's been from beginning till end. I was 100% sure we had him. I always get let down when I get involved muppet wise. I'll never learn though

And he was still running the show in games. What would he be like if he was fit. Lots of reports are saying he's fully recovered too.

Reports were also showing him applying ice to the knee 15 weeks after his surgery despite full recovery occurring 6 - 8 weeks after it. Whatever the case Louis van Gaal's medical team will be aware and I'm sure they are well placed to advise him.

He definitely wasn't running the show.

United is right in being wary about the knee. It's one thing to spend Hargreaves level money and turning out to be a dud; spending the numbers that are being thrown about and getting a crock would be another level altogether.

Would you prefer...

A. Di Maria and bargain CM
Or
B. Vidal and bargain winger?
Option A thanks. Already too many bargain wingers in our side.

di Maria & a Song/de Jong/Tiote until Carrick returns & next summer we can go big on a CM.

I'd hope for both but Vidal's knee issue does bother me, especially after Hargreaves.

Also much better luck at finding a decent bargain CM who would improve us - then a bargain winger who would do the same.

B - tired of watching our midfield toyed by Yaya and co or any other team with decent midfield players.

As I have said I am a massive fan of Vidal's but if we aren't gonna get him then who will we get. No CM looks likely. I am a massive fan of Strootman's but he is still injured.

I would have said B but Vidal knee really seems an issue what with him using an ice pack when it's supposed to be fully healed now. I really think we were genuinely interested in him but his knee is rather dodgy so we don't want to spend 40m plus with that doubt. Plus Vidals a box to box player so his knee being an issue will make him a lesser player. Because of that, I choose A.

Seems like the likeliest of scenarios.
Probably the best too. Vidal is amazing but we need a winger as much as a center mid IMO. We have nobody who can run with the ball and run at defenders apart from a 19 year old. Vidal's knee seems to genuinely be a problem too while acl injuries, though they are more serious, can be a less complicated future recovery, with regards to strootman.

If Vidal's knee really is as big a problem as everyone seems then it may be wise we don't sign him. I didn't think it was as bad. I do really rate Strootman and I think he would be a brilliant addition in January or next summer but we also need a CDM imo.

Yeah because Strootman is soooo sure, I'm sure Roma will just let him go easily too especially in the middle of the season. Makes sense.

As great as Di Maria is he wont stop us being so poor in midfield which is by far the weakest area of the team, I also doubt there is any chance Roma would sell Strootman in January.

All this talk of megastar deals, Strootman, Vidal.. Di Maria... but I don't know why we don't go for De Jong, hes proven a very consistent performer in the Prem, LvG knows him from the Dutch squad, he probably still has a house in Manchester :D wouldn't cost a bomb in either wages/fee, he'd fit in like a glove, ok hes not a superstar signing but did you see our midfield against Swansea? he'd comfortably be our top midfield performer and be a great addition to the squad,
He was linked a few weeks ago and everyone was throwing up at the thought.. don't understand why.

He would be a big boost to our midfield and would protect the back four.

For a holding mid, I feel van Gaal might like a good ball player, but also a player who does the defensive side of the game well too.

I don't get when people are saying we shouldn't sign Vidal because of his knee problem but then we should sign Strootman. Don't you know he has also had a similar if not a worse injury problem than Vidal? Vidal was injured after Strootman and came back before Strootman did. Also Strootman is going to cost somewhere in the range of £30-40m. We are NOT going to get him in January because Roma are going to a title contender this season. Also if we are getting him next summer then what do we till then? Play Fletcher and Cleverley?

Probably more realistic than Vidal given Van Gaal's connection with Strootman.

Why does LvG having a connection with Strootman mean Roma are any more likely to sell him mid-season? Especially when they'll be in the CL and will be pushing for the title.

Strootman's is a one off in jury. Vidal's sound to be persistent injuries. I did say we need a CDM too so we won't be left with just Fletcher and Cleverley.

If it were to happen, it would obviously be because Strootman himself wants the move - because of his relationship with Van Gaal. Roma would have a difficult time keeping him if he asks to leave.
