Who would we sign? A striker to replace RvP/Rooney? If anything we'll sign a young back-up, and no, I can't get excited about that when it's instead of the only local lad in years who has really had a role to play in the first-team.
We can't afford to be sentimental in terms of locality due to the situation we are in. If the manager feels it is best for the future of the club for him to move on then so be it.

If this whole Vidal thing is true he would surely be pissed that we don't even want to pay his asking price. I know we've spent close to £100m on transfers this window, give or take, but we're talking about an excellent midfielder that we really need, surely we can cough up for him?

It's not sentimentality. Welbeck is more than good enough, the fact that he's a local (and home-grown) is just a bonus.

Was Rojo £44mil?

I don't think £72m is close to £100m.

I'd sooner see the back of RVP. Honestly believe Welbeck would be huge in the future of the club and letting him go goes against everything this club stands for.

Welbeck made a case for himself during our preseason. There is no way he is just leaving without proper replacement coming in. We will not just transfer a player who can essentially play 3-4 positions (even though he is not the best at any of them) without proper reasoning and planning behind it.

I wouldn't accept anything less than £25m from Levy, anyone else possibly £15-20m that if we do decide to sell.

You heard of the Utd english tax when buying players, it is now time we enforced a tax when we sell to others in particularly Spurs.
Totally agree, we have been taken to the cleaners far too often.

:lol::lol::lol:

Long £12M, that other one £14M from Scouse to Sunderland, Welbeck (England international) £15M? Errr no...

Good point, didn't Sunderland bid £14m for Borini...ffs Borini!!

If he is worth that amount then Wellbeck should be valued at a min. £20m

Anyone got the full article? I used to be a subscriber but not anymore.

Just read it, nothing new in there that others haven't reported, just that Spurs and Sunderland could in for him. It says that LVG "has deemed him surplus to requirements."

We'll have to disagree on that but surely no-one will claim that he's not good enough as third-choice.
You'd drop Rooney or Rvp for him? If you would, do you think LVG can given he's kept them both?

If Welbeck isn't good enough to start then neither is Hernandez, Young, Valencia, Cleverley, Jones, Smalling, etc.
Hernandez isn't for sure. Neither is Cleverley. They both have better players ahead of them, like Welbeck does.

No, I wouldn't but I think Welbeck could eventually become a starter for us, and I think he could push both of them. Last season he played better than RvP, for instance, plus he offers more energy, movement and pace than either of them.

He could become a starter, I'm not convinced about it, but he definitely isn't at that level right now. And it all depends on how much potential LVG thinks he has.

Also, I think all the focus on the club is wrong. We normally give players loads of time. This is probably Welbeck desparate to leave. There have been rumours regarding this last seaosn too. I just hope it's not to a rival as that wouldbe daft.

All this "would you drop Rooney and RVP for him" nonsense is annoying, do you think we are going to be playing the same eleven for every game next season?, do you think we won't be resting players and rotating players etc?, do you think we won't get any injuries?.
We need a good squad as well as a good first team.

I remeber Rafa and a few other were told they can go too about a month back. They are still here...

If we're getting rid of Welbeck and Hernandez whilst simultaneously trying to bring in Di Maria, we're definitely trying to transition to 4-3-3 right away. The 3-5-2 experiment seems to be over.

Only the mail ran that, though. Everyone seems to be dropping the Welbeck news at the same time, as though they have been briefed.

That was just reported in the Mirror so lacked a lot of credibility. This on the other hand is being reported by multiple sources with most of them being reliable.

Edit: Welbz (ironically enough) beat me to it. It may have been the Mail I wasn't 100% sure what paper it was.

That was one Daily Mail article (or was it Mirror?). This is all the big papers. There's no getting around this. Our only hope is that no club meets our asking price and LVG sees sense over the next five months.

I think Welbeck is underrated by opposition fans but overrated by our own. He's a good player and we all love him but he's not scoring enough goals to be playing as a first choice striker at a club like this.

Which would definitely be an upside in my view.

Then you should become more thick-skinned. If Danny leaves, it's either because Wilson is showing more than him or he's desparate for playing week in week out. In one of those scenarios, his current ability to be first choice or not is relevant. This idea that it can't be him that wants to go is stupider than anythign else.

Absolutely. I reckon he feels he needs to be first choice to reach the next level, like Sturridge has, and LVG obviously can't give that to him.

The point some are making is that if he wants to become first choice then he isn't going to get it at United. Of course he will get games, but he won't be number 1.
