Turkey

Do you think they were Turkeys?
I don't know, to be honest. There is a military base nearby (Bulgarian) but moves like that (5 ships and jets) are not common, not in that area (very touristic). I don't know if Turkey would have permision to fly its jets over our teritory or manouvre ships so close to the shore (definitely in our waters). So I doubt it. I suppose bulgarian military may have had some intel about something potentially happening and those were strategic moves or training. This happened today at noon.

You mean my safety? I don't live in Turkey anymore. I left because of this political situation... not even exaggerating. I've been wanting to go back to Turkey for a while, but I'm not ashamed to admit that I fear for my safety if I do.

The government will meet force with force. The police is theirs, and they're already countering. Erdoğan won't go down without a fight.
Police against the military? Suicide in any country.

I can see why she's an ex.

Why, because she prefers someone elected rather than a military coup? As moronic as erdogan is, that's hardly the most controversial of views is it?

How often do coups lead to any kind of democracy?

Bit disappointed at how many people are cheering for this.

Turkey has had four coups (1960, 1971, 1980, and 1997), and democracy was restored after each one, although obviously not immediately. People are cheering it on because they hate Erdogan and recognize that he's taking the country down the shitter. Personally I'm worried about a civil war.

Was there a feeling that this was going to happen? Or is it incredibly sudden?

Eh? Liberal douchebags enable Islamists. What's this guy smoking.

He's talking about middle eastern liberals, who tend to be to the right of genghis Khan politically and are 'liberal' in a sense that isn't usual amongst western liberals.

This is clearly an attack on a NATO member, which means article V must be invoked to attack Turkey.

Does this work ?

Tancredi just got quoted on that reddit liveblog. Mental.

2014-15 Yemeni coup d'état ended in a civil war. Both coups (Burundi, Burkina Faso) last year ended in failure.

I'm not very educated on the politics in Turkey. Whose side should I be on?

Experts stating this is a playbook Turkish coup, in line with recent coups.

Its popcorn time a la Arab spring for the Weekend!

Erdogan is elected (I believe), but has taken Turkey in a more Islamist direction when it's often a secular country. So...possibly the military. Maybe...if they handle this right.

Turkey is a country that has largely been more succesfull than other muslim nations because of their secular stance and viewpoints. What is Erdogans answer to that? "Feck it boys, let's go full on wahhabist up in this motherfecker!"

No wonder there is a coup. Good riddance, Cnutogan.
