Turkey

The military in Turkey is powerful. If they're not half-assing it, they have the strength. If there's no unity, it can fail. I'm hoping the former is the case.

Do you think this is an uprising of more secular nature against the undoubtedly more and more islamistic Erdogan? If so I hope they succeed.

Is this terrifying or are anti-Erdogan Turks cautiously optimistic?

I'm only terrified that it will fail. I think his opponents will undoubtedly be cheering the military on. This, as far as they're concerned, is the stand that Turkey needs to take to prevent it from going over the cliff, which is where Erdoğan is absolutely taking it.

I think it is secular. We know what the army represents, and it's about time they took a stand against him spitting on Atatürk's legacy.

@Fener1907 what do you know about the Gulenists? I've never been able to figure out their role in Turkish politics, but Erdogan has tended to blame everything on them since they fell out.

The guy on Sky News suggesting its a small faction of the millitary going rouge and it will be quashed soon-ish

Ok. I hope you're right, and that violence is minimal. I'm still mildly terrified what this could result in. :(

I was supposed to be in Istanbul in few day, but cancelled the trip because I didn't feel safe going. World is fecked.

Turkish Military Statement - We have taken over. We want friendly relations with the world. This was done to impose human rights and Democracy.

Where is it from?

They're a clean version of the religion that have something oddly disturbing about them. They essentially acted as the intellectual arm of the AKP's dominance in Turkey, placing members in key positions (like in the military) and ensuring that Erdoğan was the undoubted leader of the country. They're very intelligent, and while they're no fans of a secular Turkey, I've never thought of them as being uncouth like your average AKP voter. I suppose they were capable to the point that Erdoğan saw their potential to be more than just a tool.

You think they may have a role in this? Erdogan's been acting very bitter towards them for a while now.

Aah. I figured it was real, since it was a verified account for Reuters correspondent, but yeah looks like it's from Egypt. She said 'taken from. Turkish opposition media'

Social media is full of airhead verified journos who somehow have managed to find employment with reputable news organisations.

She will eventually delete the tweet with no apology.
