Turkey

Erdogan is apparently on hols in Bodrum.

Interesting, a couple of big and and pretty respectable news stations in Holland and Belgium have been reporting Erdogan is in Mongolia for some kind of Eurasian conference. No idea if this is true though, obviously everything is very chaotic.

You think they may have a role in this? Erdogan's been acting very bitter towards them for a while now.

Although you shouldn't take my word for it, no, I don't. I just don't see the connection between the movement and the military. After all, they were useful in helping Erdoğan to gut the military in the first place. As much as I doubt Fethullah Gülen will be writing Erdoğan a birthday card any time soon, I don't see why he'd be behind restoring Turkey to a more secular position.

How do you feel the people sway in this? Are they more welcoming toward the secular inheritance of Turkey, or Erdogans more islamistic direction? It probably is split between countryside \ cities and the old \ the youth?

Not Turkey - within Russia itself which is undergoing a similar subversion of democracy and human rights, in addition to an economic collapse.

Difference is that Putin is hailed as some cult figure in Russia, while Erdogan is disliked by most modern and secular Turks.

Just heard a professor who was promoted on matters regarding the Turkish army on the radio. He kept on stressing that the most important thing is the day after the coup; he basically said that if they have a good plan it can work. If somehow the planning isn't spot on, the coup can result madness.

His numbers are fake - propped up by an immense campaign of state sponsored propaganda - i'd imagine there are military officers who are taking heart in what they are seeing in Turkey today.

Let's hope the Coup leaders didn't forget the most important bit - namely arresting Erdogan so he can't lead a counter-revolt.

Edit - he is apparently about to make a statement on Turkish TV.

I just asked my turkish ex-girlfriend about it. she said she roots for Erdogan, because she rather wants a semi-democratically elected asshole of a president at helm of the country than sick military bastards that cause a civil war.
Her words, not mine.

If it's true that he dismissed 20 generals last year then you are probably right. Weirdly enough I know nothing about Russia.

I can see why she's an ex.

I think Erdogan is better for stability at this point in time.

This military coup could easily turn to a civil war.

Holy hell this seems elaborate. They've targeted U.S nuclear facilities storing B61 nukes and are mowing the big cities as one big unit.

Erdogan is a massive pos and if this stops the war on the Turks it's good news. Of course we don't know yet what the outcome will be but this could well be good news even if it sounds absurd.

At the moment, the majority sway in a more conservative direction. However, I think even Erdoğan's supporters were somewhat baffled by his insistence on allowing all Syrian refugees to become Turkish citizens. I honestly can't tell you they're going against him, but they might be persuaded based on events this year (ISIS, PKK, Syrian refugee situation, etc).

As for how it works, old vs young is definitely an aspect of it. Unlike in Britain, the big cities (Ankara and Istanbul) tend to be split instead of unequivocally swaying towards the liberal side of the spectrum. Ankara, for example, is definitely split down the middle. The most decisive split, however, is simply Anatolia vs. the west coast.

Although they're corrupt assholes and absolutely do steal votes in elections, this map sums it up well enough.

Me? I hate Erdoğan. I hope he dies.

Well that's fairly terrifying.
