Turkey

German TV reports said/speculated, that the military might be divided and not everyone is on board. They said that they called some AKP MPs, who said, that part of the military/police is giving them protection.

Was just on the beach today (on the southern Black Sea, in Bulgaria) and there were 5 military ships and two fighter jets patroling about.

Reports on tv said Erdogan is in Mongolia right now for some kind of Eurasian political conference. Loads of contrary reports, with Prime Minister Yildirim saying there was an attempted coup that failed and saying the situation is under control. Some military chief is saying they succeeded with the coup though.

Practically the whole world seems to be one big mess right now :(

This is getting bigger right now, I assure you. This is genuinely big. TSK, the military, has announced it is taking over the government.

Edit - Turkish military has taken over Turkey's equivalent of the BBC, which is called TRT. Definitely growing.

On Sky News, Turkish Military claiming it has "taken over"

FFS, your silence worried me.

Do we have a view from Boris Johnson yet?

What's the response to this likely to be?

I really, really hope this is not the start of the Turkish Civil War...:(

EXPLOSION HEARD NEAR TURKISH POLICE ACADEMY IN ANKARA'S GOLBASI

You mean my safety? I don't live in Turkey anymore. I left because of this political situation... not even exaggerating. I've been wanting to go back to Turkey for a while, but I'm not ashamed to admit that I fear for my safety if I do.

The government will meet force with force. The police is theirs, and they're already countering. Erdoğan won't go down without a fight.

If there is resistance from the police/civilian security forces....surely the military will back down?

I wonder if these guys commiting the coup is more pro-secular and is tired of the direction Erdogan is taking the country, or if they have other motives.

Anyway, good riddance of Erdogan, never liked the closet islamistic cnut.

Not going anywhere near Turkey in the next couple years. Hopefully this will end without bloodshed, but I doubt it.

What's happening to the world? Things seem to be gradually unravelling bit by bit.

I understand you, I wouldn't pay @pauldyson1uk to go to Turkey.

The military in Turkey is powerful. If they're not half-assing it, they have the strength. If there's no unity, it can fail. I'm hoping the former is the case.

I could give him 3000 TL to try. The way the lira is going, he might be able to get a cup of tea with that.

About time. I just hope this can be done with minimum bloodshed.

Is this terrifying or are anti-Erdogan Turks cautiously optimistic?

Who outguns who?

The civilian paramilitaries (police, intelligence etc.) will be no match for the power of the military, but I was thinking more along the lines of the fact that surely the military generals will draw the line at killing their country's own police officers and other civilian staff.
