Trump/Russia/SDNY investigation

Manafort pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy against the US and one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice due to attempts to tamper with witnesses, according to a court filing Friday.

Conspiracy against the US...is that treason?

Edit: Found out. It's just conspiracy.

So let’s be clear: “Conspiracy against the United States” isn’t what it sounds like. It has nothing to do with foreign actors influencing an election. It certainly has nothing to do with treason, which would require the US and Russia to be actively at war with each other.

The statute, rather, is an extension of the ordinary crime of conspiracy: planning with someone else to do a crime. Basically, Manafort has admitted to conspiring to commit offenses against and to defraud the US government, specifically the Justice Department and Treasury Department. According to his plea deal, the offenses against the government include money laundering, tax fraud, failure to file foreign bank account reports, violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, and lying to the Department of Justice.

“The statute defines separate and additional offenses if two or more people enter into an illegal agreement with the intent to engage in criminal conduct, and commit an overt act in furtherance of that agreement,” Lisa Kern Griffin, a professor of law at Duke who specializes in criminal law and criminal procedure, told me last October.

The question I want answered is why it's taking ages to charge Roger Stone when it's so obvious he's in trouble. Roger Stone says Mueller has not even requested a meeting.

Could just be that Stone and Carter Page (another obvious candidate for charges) are not really involved in this all that much.

It should be shortened to 'The President did nothing except play golf'.

Can't wait for him to throw his kids under the bus. I never liked Don Jr. He's weak. SAD.

Well we know from numerous sources and stories taht this is exactly true at least. Don Jr. used to despise his dad too and was drinking himself to death just like Don Sr.'s brother.

Good spot by a RAWK member (from October 2016):
CBS said:
Donald Trump offered New Jersey Governor Chris Christie the job of vice president, sources confirm to CBS News. Days before the Republican National Convention, however, Trump reneged on the deal after others in his inner circle convinced him otherwise.

First reported by the New York Post, an indecisive Trump had initially decided on Christie after the New Jersey governor made his final case to Trump on July 12.

Christie, the first former presidential candidate to get behind Trump after a poor showing in the New Hampshire primary, had assumed a high profile role on the campaign prior to the Convention – reaching out to donors and potential high profile supporters.

Paul Manafort, Trump’s campaign manager at the time, allegedly had another idea in mind.

Manafort had arranged for Trump to meet with his first choice for the job on July 13: Indiana Governor Mike Pence. Afterwards, the plans was for Trump and Pence to then fly back to New York together and a formal announcement would be made, a campaign source said of Manafort’s thinking.

What had previously been reported as a “lucky break” by the New York Times was actually a swift political maneuver devised by the now fired campaign manager. Set on changing Trump’s mind, he concocted a story that Trump’s plane had mechanical problems, forcing the soon-to-be Republican nominee to stay the night in Indianapolis for breakfast with the Pence family on Wednesday morning.

Swayed by Pence’s aggressive pitch, Trump agreed to ditch Christie and make Pence his VP the following day, according to a source.

However, another source with direct knowledge of the situation contends that it was Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and a key adviser, who made the final moves to seal Pence’s fate and oust Christie.

“It all goes back to his dad being prosecuted by Christie,” the source told CBS News.

As U.S. Attorney, Christie sent Kushner’s father to prison in 2009. Charles Kushner spent 14 months in prison for witness tampering, illegal campaign donations and tax evasion.

Kushner arranged for a plane to bring Pence to New York on the Thursday in question.

“Pence showing up caught Trump off guard and pretty much boxed in the decision,” the source adds.

It seems Mr. Pence is beholden to Manafort & Kushner for his job. Hmmm, the plot thickens.

In the meantime, Trump has blocked the FBI from investigating the Kavanaugh sex assault case.

"Reasons of transparency" my arse. He's picked a small number of pages to be declassified without the context that the classified pages will have.

And how the hell is all this not interfering in an ongoing investigation?

He's obviously attempting to gin up some base support since no sane people are willing to believe anything about the Strzok/Page, McCabe, Ohr narrative.

The state of things over there if Trump can dictate the narrative pretty much as and when he pleases, while up to his neck in shit, and losing his marbles by the day, etc.... Fecking hell...

He's an absolute shambles, and his base love it.

The only solace I can offer/ that I take is anecdotal: I went to a University that, at the time, was probably GOP leaning. Certainly the parents were. One of my roommates was head of the Young Republicans for 3 of the years there. And denounced his affiliation before the last election, and abstained from voting. 2 other Young Republicans I'm friends with went one step further and voted for Hillary - something I would never in a million years have imagined possible in the early 00's when we were at school.

Basically, every single smart Republican I've met is ashamed, disgusted - they have the same reactions we do. The only Republicans that actually support Trump at this stage are the Fox News watching, poorly educated, disenfranchised old white folks that long for better days that never f*cking existed for everyone. And they're getting older, sicker and less relevant.

From all I've seen of my generation, these are the last death throes of a bloated corpse*.

* or you can fear that that the house and senate are so incredibly gerry mandered that the GOP will still win both in November, and just fear for whatever America's democracy was supposed to be. Btw, the constitution is awesome, and the founders would have shot Trump in the face by now for the good of it.

Part of this high approval among Republicans is because the Republican party is shrinking as so called RINOs leave for independent-land. It used to be in the 30s and is now likely somewhere in the mid 20s.

Not wholly accurate. I see numerous persons aged 20-40 still supporting this clown and many are educated types, some holding top professions not the blue collar types one would wager. Some of these types held reasonable views in the past. The frightening reality is they have rallied in a "support the party against the liberals" tribal jizzfest. It's a cult.

I don't know the ins and outs too well. How would this come back at him?

It won't.

It’s the exact same trick they tried to pull with the Intelligence committee memo a few months back. It won’t work because it’s a very obvious and direct attack on the intelligence agencies, and them and the Democrats will provide direct rebuttal. All it will do is make Trumps base happy, while further dissolving the GOP’s credibility. It’s not going to gain him any new followers, it’s just a desperate attempt to shore up his disintegrating support.
